Do ties need washing?

I reckon we have some 20 year-old jobbies that have never been washed.

Is this normal or disgusting?

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 10/12/2009 09:43

Depends if the dribble stains are showing?

MmeLindt · 10/12/2009 09:44

20 yo jobbies - that is pretty disgusting.

You do know what a jobbie is in Scotland, don't you?

DH's ties never last that long but he sometimes puts them into the dry cleaner if they are stained.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 10/12/2009 09:46

DH firmly believes they are self-cleaning. He is wrong though, especially as they tend to do double duty as his bib.

GentleOtter · 10/12/2009 09:46

Disgusting. Lumps of food and everything.
Throw them in the washing machine.

Think of all those male gynaecologists with flappy ties who do smear tests.....

morningpaper · 10/12/2009 09:47

Unless the gynae is VERY inexperienced, it is rather unusual for a vagina to actually eat a tie

OP posts:
CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 10/12/2009 09:49

What if the gynae's patients are male though, eh?

Poledra · 10/12/2009 09:49

Gynaes usually wear bowties, don't they?

Ponders · 10/12/2009 09:49

don't throw silk ones in the washer

MmeLindt · 10/12/2009 09:50

I don't think that ties and washing machines go well together, they tend to lose their shape.

leothelioness · 10/12/2009 09:50

lol @ vagina eating a tie.

no ties are not self cleaning. 20 years is pretty disgusting, yes.

check the label before putting them in the washing machine. all of DHs ties say dryclean only.

morningpaper · 10/12/2009 09:51

If the gynae's patients are male then he is exhibiting a worrying lack of experience

YY all ties must be silk surely, isn't that some sort of Rule?

But dry-cleaning a load of ties seems extravagant

ChloeHandbag · 10/12/2009 09:51

Disusting.

My dh wouldn't be caught dead in a tie, so it's not an issue for us so maybe I'd feel different if it was. I put the dc's in the wash every Friday.

morningpaper · 10/12/2009 09:52

My gynae doesn't wear a tie, he is open-necked

rather scruffy actually, in fact his shirt tails are usually flapping so perhaps they ARE likely to be eaten

Ponders · 10/12/2009 09:54

you can hand wash silk ties - just don't wring 'em - roll them in a towel & then hang them up until they're dry.

Nylon ones can go in the machine.

GentleOtter · 10/12/2009 09:54

Silk ties come up well in the machine but then I just lob everything in.

Do you remember those ties from the 80's that had an entire crocodile or the like?

MmeLindt · 10/12/2009 09:57

I am now wondering what kind of ties MrMP wears. The ones that my DH wore 20 years ago were quite minging.

Perhaps one like this?

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 09:59

Oh no ties in the washing machine is a bad idea! It wrecks the linins so the knot never lies flat afterwards.

Spot clean with babywipes and occasionally dry clean.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 10/12/2009 10:00

Do gynae's not do men then ? So who looks after men's bits? I bet they don't wave THEIR ties around willy nilly.

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:01

My gynae tucks his tie into his shirt about three buttons down. It looks rather silly.

senua · 10/12/2009 10:01

This is weird, I had never really thought about it before.
I wash DS's every week, but never DH'S.

MmeLindt · 10/12/2009 10:01

That would be an urologist, the men's gynae.

morningpaper · 10/12/2009 10:08

Dh's ties are mainly like school ties, so not particularly adventurous

My first husband had one of those piano ties...

OP posts:
Poledra · 10/12/2009 10:23

Actually, it's an andrologist for men's bits.

Bonsoir · 10/12/2009 10:25

Beyond disgusting.

Ties need to go to the dry cleaner's regularly.

SmoothCriminal · 10/12/2009 10:31

Is there no french term for 'beyond disgusting' Bonsoir?
