Renault Scenic, is it a mistake? (car seat questions?)

Hi there,

we have our first child on the way so decided to pick up something a bit more practical than the car we currently drive, decided to go for a Grand Scenic.

The problem we have noticed is that most of the ISOFIX bases appear to have a leg and the Scenic has underfloor storage, apparently this is an issue according to some shops , before I go an buy this scenic can anybody advise on what seats fit safely in a Grand Scenic, we are looking at Group 0 and were considering the maxi cosi seat and isofix base.

Thanks in Advance

Hi, we just bought a scenic (not a grand one though) and we've got a maxi cosi cabriofix seat, we went to mothercare to see if the isofix base is suitable, and although the base fits, it makes the seat too upright for the baby to be in. The seat on its own is fine though. We have underfloor storage too, the seat fitting lady didn't say anything about it being a problem, but the base wasn't suitable anyway.

adhsmith · 12/03/2008 01:49

Thanks for the response, do you think she may not have said anything because she didn't know it was there or because the bases are adjustable in such a manner that it avoids the floor pocket?

We would check fitment first but not having the car it is obviously difficult if the car is to be a hassle then at this early stage I'm quite happy to change car chioce, the Scenic just seems well laid out.

To be honest I don't think she knew it was there, there are all sorts of fancy carpets and things on top of the storage bits.

We've only had our scenic for a week or so but we love it, it's especially good at the minute as I'm 36 weeks pg and don't need to heave myself in & out of the car because the seats are nice and high!

My uncle recommended the scenic to us, we were looking at those, zafiras (don't wear as well apparently and also the car seat we've got didn't fit safely) and picassos (which I didn't like because the way the windscreen and dash were seemed like I was looking down a long tube).

I think a seat with a foot will be fine, I will check out if the maxi cosi has a fitment issue like you stated in the grand though, it seems as part of the euroNCAP test they used the following seat for the child protection bit and specifically mentioned the use of a foot.

www.roemer-britax.de/produkt.php?lang=en&catID=1&id=3&navid=5

They wouldn't have used it if it was unsafe to have a foot.

Thanks for you assistance.

I have a grand scenic with isofix and was told the same. But you can turn the airbags off in the scenic and the under storage at the front is to one side which means it can be used in the front seat.
Most of the car seats from 9 months dont have a footplate, they just slot in so its only the 0-9 car seats that need to be at the front.
We had the Britax 0-9 isofix and if you go on their website you will find thats its approved for use in the front seat with the airbag turned off.

Its a nice car, I've enjoyed the space especially when dd was tiny.
We are trading it in though because it drinks petrol so if you do a lot of miles you might want to think about that. We are currently getting through £65 a week! but then we do do an awful loot of running about and the school runs a fourty five minute round trip twice a day on its own. We are getting a diesel Polo its going to be a shocker on the space but should be loads cheaper to run!

emma57573 · 14/03/2008 09:29

Just thought I would add, I would have though it would be fine with the back seats but they didnt advice it when we contacted them so I just felt it was better to be safe than sorry.

1 baby = need for 7 seats ?

Congrats on the baby. Don't feel like you have to go for an enormous car. I have 3 kids (almost 16, 14 & 5) and had a Ford Focus up til a year ago. I now have a Grand Scenic.

I can't really advise on the car seat thing as DD was in a high backed booster by the time I got the GS.

Mine is a petrol. It is fine for fuel but is HIDEOUSLY underpowered (it is a 1.6). I should have got the 2.0

emma57573 · 14/03/2008 17:38

yes ours is the 1.6 and I agree about it being hideously underpowered, the petrol is TERRIBLE for us but then again we do get through the miles. We went in and ordered our new polo today. Will have to wait 12 weeks but at least it will stop drinking fuel.

The diesel one seems a lot better, we wanted to drastically cut our fuel bill thats why we are going for a polo. This websites good if you want to find out more on running costs and co2 www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/

i have a scenic
and love it

didnt know about the storage though? where do i find it? can you tell the book hasnt left the glove box!!

i was a bit annoyed as the one i saw in showroom had sun blinds you could lift up to cover window and mine arrived without them

JodieG1 · 14/03/2008 17:47

I wouldn't buy one. We used to have one and it was constantly breaking down, the AA man told us they always had loads of calls out to Renaults. We now have a Mazda and it's much more reliable.

Berrie · 14/03/2008 17:52

I have a senic, probably 7 years old now. It has great space inside and the height is brilliant for putting children in and out. However as a car I don't rate it. The heating is rubbish. It is unreliable, things are always going wrong on it. Every time there is a problem we are told that senics are famous for whatever fault it is (shock absorbers, ignition coils, starting problems, ignition) It was 5 years old when we got it and though we've had a series of bangers in our time, we've never had so many problems. I'll not have another.

LIZS · 14/03/2008 17:53

Have you checked the Britax fitfinder, shows suitable positions and alternative infant seats . You don't have to use the isofix. If you have such a big car , forgoing one storage area for a year or so should n't be a big deal anyway. Next stage seats don't use legs anyway.

i have a grand scenic, 2 year old and have had nothing but trouble with the electrics. and it drinks petrol
i really wouldnt recommend one

katz · 15/03/2008 08:13

we're trading in our scenic today yeah!

not sure on the car seats but we were told that the underfloor storeage rules out the foot type isofix.

adhsmith · 15/03/2008 17:05

Yup a Grand Scenic for 1 child might seem OTT but they are dirt cheap new ( £12k from Motorpoint/Trade-sales etc) and I was after something that I won't need to change in the future when the next kid comes along, you loose too much dosh chnaging cars each time, suprisingly whilst spacious inside its smaller on the road than a mondeo

I have gone for the diesel, the torque will help to carry the heavy car and 40-50 mpg should ease the burden on the pocket, my main worry is reliability but I've had a series of Fiats and Alfas and they have always been superb despite the urban myths associated with them so I am hoping the Renault is the same, the warranty should clear any initial niggles.

OP posts:
JodieG1 · 15/03/2008 20:52

They're not urban myths. We had one, as I said earlier, and it was crap. It was a new car and alwyas had problems starting it but they could never find a problem, so it was days wasted all the time. Electrics went wrong all the time etc, it really wouldn't be worth the money saved from buying a more reliable car.

EricL · 15/03/2008 20:53

I'm never buying a Renault again.

Very poor build quality and reliability.

TheMadHouse · 15/03/2008 20:58

I have a grand scienic and I love it it is the diesel 2 litre and great. I have two under three and often have another 20 month old and it is great speace wise and also neveer broke down yet - touch wood.
