Renault Scenic, is it a mistake? (car seat questions?)

Hi there,

we have our first child on the way so decided to pick up something a bit more practical than the car we currently drive, decided to go for a Grand Scenic.

The problem we have noticed is that most of the ISOFIX bases appear to have a leg and the Scenic has underfloor storage, apparently this is an issue according to some shops , before I go an buy this scenic can anybody advise on what seats fit safely in a Grand Scenic, we are looking at Group 0 and were considering the maxi cosi seat and isofix base.

Thanks in Advance

I know a Renault machanic who has told me if I ever bought a renault I was bonkers and since he had told me that I shouldn't buy one he wouldn't fix it.
I have an Audi instead.

agree it isn't an urban myth . We've spent well over £1 on our 6 year old Scenic last year - replacing drive belt etc. Prior to that we'd had the igntion coils go, which fortunately were just still under warranty, and brake pads. Very common issues when i checked here and on internet. Have also had a Clio and 4*4 Scenic, fewer underlying problems but not cheap to service or for parts . You may well want to trade it in before a 2nd child came along anyway. We found the regular size Scenic fine for 2 kids (plus baby stuff and ski stuff!).

NomDePlume · 16/03/2008 12:16

Mine has been v reliable.

lou33 · 16/03/2008 12:41

i have a 2.0 litre petrol automatic version, and i love it

4 kids, one car seat but not an isofix one, one wheelchair, with plenty of room to spare

it's going in for it's first service tomorrow, it's had a couple of niggly problems to sort out, but nothing affecting the driving ability

theUrbanDryegg · 16/03/2008 12:47

Scenics are shite. we have a 1.6 petrol automatic and it's been nothing but trouble. liked the idea of it but the reality is that they're badly designed. not nearly as much boot space as you'd think either.

get a ford galaxy if you must have an enormous car.

NomDePlume · 16/03/2008 12:48

The boot space in mine is brilliant. Is yours the newer model UD ?

LIZS · 16/03/2008 12:49

should be "spent well over £1K", lol. Ours is the previous model btw

theUrbanDryegg · 16/03/2008 12:50

god, i wish NDP. nah tis an S reg pile of shit. i hate hate hate it. still a little bit cross at dh for writing off our ford escort. wish we had got the mondeo estate instead. grr.

NomDePlume · 16/03/2008 12:52

Space in the new one is farrrrrrrr better. I heart the space in mine.

theUrbanDryegg · 16/03/2008 12:54
Envy
NomDePlume · 16/03/2008 12:55

lol, it is still horribly underpowered though

lou33 · 16/03/2008 13:06

yes i have masses of boot space in mine

and as it's a 2.0 litre enough power as well

horseshoe · 20/03/2008 14:49

Dont get me started about the scenics...

Boot lock problems are major and a pain to fix.

One magazine calls then renault scrapheaps and I have to say I agree. Had nothing but trouble with mine from day 1.

Hmmm, reading all this negative posting is really starting to put me off, doesn't help that the dealer just rang saying there is an airbag fault picked up on the PDI, I don't even own one yet and its gone wrong, perhaps time to back out of the deal, I'll only loose the deposit.

Our renault problems weren't urban myths either. Engine cutting out on outside lane of A30 springs to mind. Plus numerous others - was a Laguna though.

What is wrong with the car you've got now for a baby? I have always had small 3 door cars with my two. DH has larger company car, but still not huge (Volvo s40).

Curlygirly · 26/03/2008 15:26

I love the space in our Scenic for my 3 dc but it has had so many major problems. We are looking for new car now and def wouldn't get scenic again.

Flibbertyjibbet · 26/03/2008 15:34

Interesting to hear how many of you think the scenics are crap. I am currently getting ready to change my car (12 yrs old!) and after seeing a scenic the other day and liking the look of it had added that to my list.
7 seats for one baby? PMSL 6 of us used to fit in my dads Hillman Imp and even went on holiday in it too with luggage etc!
Sorry that should be, 7 seats for one PFbaby???

adhsmith · 28/03/2008 01:17

We've both got small cars, mines a 2 door coupe and the missus car is a 3 door, it would have plenty of space for the child but it is quite old, neither car has great rear access so I'm replacing it, thought I'd get something a little more practical, whilst the scenic is a 7 seater and people get hung up on that, thats not what I was looking at it for, though I'm sure it'll come in handy, its just well laid out and spacious, its not as big as everyone thinks, its just the cars box shape that makes it seem larger than it is, in reality it has less than 3 centimetres extra in width/length over an S40, its just 10 or so centimetres taller and packaged differently.

Same as Berrie, our Scenic is 7 yrs old and not very well made. We bought it new and before it was 2 yrs old the exhaust fell off. When it was 2 yrs and 2 months, just out of warranty, the turbo failed.
Like Berrie says, everytime you have a problem, turns out Scenics are famous for it. (Fortunately this meant we got Renault to pay for most of the cost of the new turbo).
Also the seatbelts in the back don't slide back properly (another common problem with Scenics) so now DS is 5 and gets in and out by himself we keep getting the metal part of the seatbelt stuck in the door so the door doesn't open and we need to get the garage to fix it every time. (Free of charge thank goodness, we know them well now!)

We will never buy another Renault although for storage etc the Scenic is great, all those little compartments.

Othersideofthechannel · 28/03/2008 05:32

What about the Picasso? It's very similar to the Scenic but possibly more reliable?

adhsmith · 28/03/2008 14:43

Not looked much at the Picasso as I didn't like it as much but might take a gander at cars again this weekend.

Regarding your turbo thats unfortunate but thats a general problem with Variable Nozzle Turbos and whether you have a BMW, a VW or a Renault the problem is the same, there are only a few of manufacturers that make the Turbos and you often find the turbo fitted to one brand is the same as one fitted to another.

Thought I'd report back as I've had my Scenic a few weeks now, at this point I'm very pleased with it, its quiet, comfortable, economical and has loads of space.

Hopefully as its new a lot of the problems with the older models have been resolved and I'll have no issues. (fingers crossed) I've only done 1500 miles in it so it's still running in but the diesel engine is plenty good enough to pull this large car, had 6 passengers in it on the weekend and it cruised along nice enough, no problems with performance, economy took at a bit of a hit over 70mph with that weight in the car but still managed 40mpg, does 50+ day to day which is handy with the rising fuel costs, over 100 miles to a tenner.

I like it a lot, bargain motor.......if it lasts :D
