DIESEL in a PETROL Car.

plowder · 07/12/2007 00:32

My petrol was in the red, and I went to the petrol station and inadvertently put 42pence worth of Diesel in before realising that it was Diesel, I then put £30.00 worth of Petrol in should I take the car to the Garage. I drove the 300yards home but wandered if it will be ok.

I haven't told Dh as he would be slightly upset [huge understatement emotion]

This won't make you feel better...

Friend had mega brand-new BMW and put diesel in it. Had to have a whole new engine costing £9000 which wasn't covered by warranty...

fortyplus · 07/12/2007 00:34

But only 42p-worth? Hopefully you'll get away with that!

EricScrooge · 07/12/2007 00:35

Diesel in a petrol engine is suicide.

You should not have driven it. It is much 'dirtier' than petrol and can screw up your engine.

I would ask a garage immediately whether such a small amount will screw it up.

Don't hide it.

Everyone makes mistakes.

bookthief · 07/12/2007 00:36

I did this, but about £2 worth. I called the AA and the guy siphoned it off. He said that with the amount I'd put in it I'd probably have been ok if I'd filled the tank up with petrol, so 42p you should be ok.

plowder · 07/12/2007 00:38

Thnakyou for your posts, I will ring the garage in the morning. Luckily £30 took the car to very nearly full mark. (a smidge below full on the dial)

£30 and it was full?

What is it? A scalextric car?

plowder · 07/12/2007 00:45

A very small fiat punto 1.4

I have a 1.0 Polo that has only recently started costing more than £30 to fill up. So you're not alone

Bet you don't live in the south east then!

CripleH · 08/12/2007 00:44

My Ford Fiesta takes about £32 to fill up totally and I'm driving between Carlisle and Gretna all the time.

Things is simple up here...

EricScrooge · 08/12/2007 01:01

I have a 407 and it cost me £67 to fill up the other day.

foofi · 08/12/2007 06:38

(It cots £100 to fill up my car)

Top Gear did do a programme once where they put diesel in a petrol car and petrol in a diesel car. One immediately died and the other seemed to be OK, but very helpfully I can't remember now which was which!! I expect you can find the clip somewhere. (Needless to say they weren't brand new mercedes type cars or anything, so they might have been dying anyway.)

I have a fiat brava 1.6, used to cost me less than £30. Now its about £45-£50.

Thanks Gordon.

Flashman · 04/06/2008 13:30

Oh I did the opposite in the wifes car pertol into a Diesel - and filled in. Luck I did not turn the engine so just has to pay for a tank drain and clean. However I beleive it was her fault - she was talking / nagging at the time and I was annoyed and did not look at the pump

apparently diesel in a petrol engine (if small amounts) is ok, make you a bit smokey might clog your injectors (if fuel injected), but won't cause any permanent damage. But petrol in a diesel engine is an entirely different story...

VW golf diesels have an automatic engine cut off if the wrong fuel is put in (or the more recent ones do, as my mum recently put over £50 of petrol in her diesel car, only reason she didn't need a new engine was because of the cut off!).

piratecat · 04/06/2008 19:49

me too lmao @scalextric

all i know is that ten quid gets me quite a bit less than 1/4 tank. Its not fair.

oh i have a ten yr old golf.

£75 for a full tank of diesel now, I remember buying petrol at 42p a litre 10 years ago.
The price rises have definitely curbed my driving, makes me think twice about some journeys now.

ajandjjmum · 05/06/2008 09:09

I filled my diesel with petrol a while ago. Mercedes quoted £4,000 to put it right, otherwise they wouldn't continue with their guarantee.

A local garage washed and cleared it all out for about £350 including a full tank of diesel.

For what it's worth, I was told that once it was cleaned and sorted, it would be fine, ie. if there was a problem, you would know straight away, rather than it taking a long time to show.

My car's been fine since.

42p would only buy a thimblefull now, so I'm sure you'll be fine!

fryalot · 05/06/2008 09:10

so... out of curiosity, where does everyone live, and how much is petrol where you are?

We are in East Yorks and unleaded is currently about the £1.14 mark. You lot?

zippitippitoes · 05/06/2008 09:12

i have a fiat doblo and it costs about 78 quid to fill with diesel

fryalot · 05/06/2008 09:13

(because I can't join in the "how much does it cost to fill up your car" conversation as we have never actually filled it up )
