Mumsnet is great but.......

Hello dad's,

My wife has been on mumsnet since the birth of our son. She's always telling me how great it is. So I have finally started.

I just think that there should be an alternative for dads. It's great that there is a section on here for us dads, but I just think that its not the same.

Is this just the male ego or do I have a point? I don't know.

I'm thinking of starting up something similar to mumsnet but for dads but want to find out what you guy's think and is it something that you would use?

The only thing close is fathers direct (there is a link in one of the other conversations in the men's room) but its just a government websit with a lot of information. Don't get me wrong it's good if you need information but not the same as a mumsnet type discussion board.

I'm with you MDOT. Welcome by the way. I joined fairly recently too and started a thread similar to this asking the same questions. I would join up. There are a few other dads on here that probably feel the same. But I guess the problem with a male only version is how often people would log in to keep the threads going....I'm not a Stay At Home Dad [SAHD] so I don't log in to MN that much really.

Thats what alot of people have said to me but it would still be nice.

Just found your thread and put a post on.

GOD!!!

THE BETRAYAL!!!

use it a bit more and it will be better.

"I guess the problem with a male only version is how often people would log in to keep the threads going....'

I used to go to another site on the net before I found mn and there was a dad's page on there

it was full of unanswered threads from dads, mainly asking 'why is she so moody? we have a 3-week old baby...'

since you were an authority on condoms

JackieNo · 05/02/2007 10:54

And there are quite a few female MNers who post from work (as I am doing atm), and some who only ever come on here when they're at work, so you don't have to be a SAHD to join in.

Dinosaur · 05/02/2007 10:55

FISO (where my DH posts) has a parenting section.

Cappuccino · 05/02/2007 10:55

I guess the reason why men would want their own board is because, like in life, women are continually interrupting their conversations

morningpaper · 05/02/2007 10:55

Hmm we found a simlar board recently

I think the categories were something like:

SEX
PORN
COMPUTER GAMES
MAGAZINES
FOOTBALL

It WAS funny

Can anyone remember what site it was?

hunkermunker · 05/02/2007 10:55

Hello.

We're all men on here anyway (I certainly am).

Cappuccino · 05/02/2007 10:56

oh yes

'did anyone watch that game on Sunday? You know, the one with the, er, ball?'

foxtrot · 05/02/2007 10:57

was that the game with the round ball or the odd-shaped ball??

Twiglett · 05/02/2007 10:57

there are many male forums .. but it does seem as though in general males find it far more difficult to talk about emotional subject matter like this

the reason some dads get on with mumsnet is purely because they get pulled in by the way mums chat and are capable of / enjoy joining in

I think you'll find that any dad's forum will end up like a night down the pub .. and not be what you envisaged

'did you see the match last night?'
'yes but DS was screaming through a bit of it'
'oh that's a shame .. good goal wasn't it'

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/02/2007 10:58

What's in a name?

This sites motto is "For Parents by Parents".

If you feel a little excluded, then that's down to you. Just jump on in.

As for unanswered threads - well - we all get those. All the time. You just need to get to grips with how the forum works and then make the most of it. I dont think it makes a difference whether its called "mumsnet" "dadsnet" or "monkeysarsenet". It's the individuals that make it.

Twiglett · 05/02/2007 10:58

MP I remember that site .. feckin' hysterical

Dinosaur · 05/02/2007 10:59

FISO

ComeOVeneer · 05/02/2007 10:59

Not so sure about "monkeysarsenet" tbh QV. But I agree it is a forum for all parents and you just need to get stuck in.

Dinosaur · 05/02/2007 11:00

Btw, you have to scroll down rather a long way to find the parenting section .

MichaelDadOfTom · 05/02/2007 11:01

Thanks for the support ladies.

It's not a betrayl, I think mumsnet is great. although I only joined today I have been here vicariously (unsure of spelling) through DW for months now.

My point is that its just not the same. Mumsnet is well known people always refer to it I hear mums on the bus 'I tried sammy on those biscuits/mumsnet helped with this' etc, etc.

You are very unlikely to find a dad saying the same. Not very manly.

Like I said it is at least somewhat just a male ego thing but it would be great to have a 'dadsnet'.

And it would have a 'mum's room'

Pruni, the presence of men on mumsnet has ended in tears from time to time, though...

Twiglett · 05/02/2007 11:02

just look how dull the men's room is

men just don't do it the same way women do

its not your fault

your penis gets in the way

Twiglett · 05/02/2007 11:03

you've been here a day

a day

rofl .. see .. point proved ..

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/02/2007 11:03

LOL! I dont mention "Mumsnet" out loud either

It's not just a man thing.....although for me its because I dont want family and friends wandering on here to see what I say about them

ComeOVeneer · 05/02/2007 11:05

TBH I wouldn't have thought there are enough men out there who want to talk about parental issues as there are mums to make a dadsnet viable. A stereotypical opinion I'm sure and I may be wrong, but...
