A very underused adjective in my opinion.

The title should say :-

"To think we should all use the word "oleaginous" a bit more?"

Minimammoth · 16/01/2014 22:16

And pulchritudinous.

AuntieStella · 16/01/2014 22:16

I find it's used by oily public school stereotypes. So no thanks.

But I'd live to see more transmogrifications.

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:17

Oh yes!

Good one!

"Refulgent" is sadly underused.

PacificDogwood · 16/01/2014 22:19

YANBU.

'Tis a fine word.

Much like 'vociferous' 'persimmon' and 'serendipity'.

"There was an old man of Calcutta
Who coated his tonsils with butta
Which altered his snore
From a thunderous roar
To a soft oleaginous mutta."

from this marvellous site.

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:19

I'm feeling sanguine despite your attitude AuntStella

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:21

Oooh.

Thanks Pacific!

Yes! This is one of my favourite words although it's tricky to get into normal conversation, I don't think I've managed it more than once or twice since I first heard it used many years ago to (very accurately imo) describe Michael Portillo.

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:23

I have been very perspicacious lately - it's my great age.

I have also perfected a quizzical look that I reserve for annoying colleagues.

I used the word 'enervated' in a room with 15 people in a few weeks back. I said 'oh I just feel so enervated today' in quite a loud voice.

The room fell silent and everyone looked at me. I was quite Blush.

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:34

This is my point exactly MoreBeta!

We must use the old words before no-one remembers them any more Sad

How is our request for a Cunning Linguists topic coming on btw?

SecretRed · 16/01/2014 22:36

Onomatopoeic is vastly underused imo. It's a lovely word.

LittleMissGerardButlersMinion · 16/01/2014 22:37

I love the word discombobulated though I have no idea what it means Blush

Salmotrutta · 16/01/2014 22:38

I've added that to my bookmarks to peruse at leisure Pacific!

Lovely!
