Royal Opera House London: seats

Hi all. I have two tickets for a ballet performace here, but can now only use one. I'm going to return the other one for a credit, but does anyone know which is likely to have the better view?

Row G, Seat 67 | Amphitheatre
Row A, Seat 78 | Balcony

TIA

We saw it a few weeks ago in amphitheatre H58/59. It was pretty distant and lots around us had opera glasses but the seats were fine. Balcony row A you can lean forwards.

Oh, that looks OK to me. (also, hallelujah for a pic with actual people on stage – it's hard to imagine when you only get a pic of the stage empty).

I went to see Giselle last night, it was absolutely stunning! You will have a fabulous time.

I have been to the ROH a few times and you can click on your seat on the seating plan to see the view from your seat. However, I have found some seats line up directly behind each other, making it very difficult to see around the person in front. I would check the seat plan and make sure the seats are offset, so you can see through the gap between seats - you need to imagine the view with people actually in the seats. One performance was really spolt by this so I'm very keen on checking now!

Gardenertrouble · 11/03/2026 18:57

Between the two I would choose the Amphitheatre, although you will be a lot further away from the stage. It has a view of the whole stage. The Balcony seat view is quite restricted.
I saw a live stream of Giselle last week and the ballet does make use of the whole width of the stage, so you may miss a lot having the restricted view.

From a previous thread. Someone posted a photo from Amphitheatre G 66.

Have a great time whatever you decide @ConstanzeMozart

I hope you have better luck than me. I have only been to the ROH once, and the performance was abandoned after the first act because they couldn’t open the curtains!

GoneBackToTheWorld · 11/03/2026 19:54

Giselle? Honestly. I think this matters less than some other ROH productions whether you see it to one side. Maybe a few bits of business with Hilarion... but the ballet is most fairly centre stage

We saw Osipova in Romeo and Juliet last year (stunning) and we're glad to have a more central amphitheatre ticket. If we had been on the balcony to the right we would have missed her on the balcony.

GoneBackToTheWorld · 11/03/2026 19:55

Also- so envious- the ROH production of Giselle is utterly stunning

Oh no! I hope you got a refund or to go again?

Thank you. In fact they say it's G67 – my seat! It is a bit far away but otherwise looks fine.

Yes, I'm thinking amphitheatre.
Romeo and Juliet must have been amazing. I'm seeing Natalia Osipova in Giselle 😊That's what I'm going for really 😁

Yes, a full refund in a couple of days. I hope to go again sometime, but nothing booked yet. I had a cheaper restricted legroom seat in the front row of the amphitheater which was brilliant. I’m short so plenty of room!

Have you decided what to do yet @ConstanzeMozart ?

Oh blimey. There's a cast change for tomorrow 13th as Natalia hurt herself in rehearsal the other day and has been replaced by Marianela Nunez.

At the moment she is still down to perform on the 19th though.

Fingers crossed she'll be okay by then, but if not it will probably be Marianela Nunez again, and she's utterly fab and of the two, I'd choose to see her anyway.

All cast changes are on the RBO website, but they might not announce it one way or the other until the day.

Yeah, I chose that date specifically to see Osipova. Haven't seen either of them live, but from what I've seen recorded I prefer her to Nunez. Certainly in this ballet anyway.

We saw the live stream last week with Akane Takada and Matthew Ball, and they were both outstanding.

chillyputsomesockson · 12/03/2026 17:47

I had tickets for nutcracker in stalls circle row c seats 53 & 54, was really excited as looking at the seat plan the looked great, only 3 rows back slightly higher than stalls and dead centre facing the stage. Got there and they were terrible. Seating not tiered enough and off set enough with the row in front, so my view was just the back of the head of the person in front. At interval I asked usher if I could stand with the standing people for the second half, fortunately he sent me to the managers desk and they moved my to great seats in the stalls.
I don’t know how tiered the amphitheater is, so long as some is able to assure you that your view won’t be the back of someone’s head, the straight ahead view would be nice, but it’ll be very far away.
re the balcony , I can’t see seat 78 on the plan but assuming they’ve added a couple of chairs next to 76, I would be tempted to go for that as it’s front row. There are boxes next to you further towards the stage so their view will be worse, which means yours shouldn’t be awful!

GoneBackToTheWorld · 12/03/2026 17:48

Oh no, fingers crossed for Naralia and for you to see her. She is Giselle. Must have seen the 2014 DVD of her with Acosta close to 50 times. To see her as Giselle would have been a dream
She is so hard working and knows scores of people fly into England just to see her (the lady besides us had travelled from Mongolia to see her!), so please feel cautiously optimistic about her being back on the 19th. Everything crossed for you.
She was a perfect Juliet. 10000000x bring binoculars because her facial expressions are everything. She's an incredible actress. The whole time she was lying "dead" on the tomb and others were dancing, she was still magnetic and riveting, and all eyes were on her- she has such presence!
And yay, I'd go amphitheatre too- especially to get the full effect of the Wilis dancing and crossing each other in Act II.❤

Next question: anyone know where I can order decent opera glasses from to arrive before next Thursday? I probably won't be able to get to any shops in this period, so will need them sent.

OP posts:
GoneBackToTheWorld · 12/03/2026 18:27

They do sell them at the shop there and they are supposed to be good (if expensive).
I brought my high powered birdwatching binos! I'm Australian and don't give a damn lol!
