Royal Opera House London: seats

ConstanzeMozart · 11/03/2026 17:49

Hi all. I have two tickets for a ballet performace here, but can now only use one. I'm going to return the other one for a credit, but does anyone know which is likely to have the better view?

Row G, Seat 67 | Amphitheatre
Row A, Seat 78 | Balcony

TIA

What are you going to see?

Either seat will be beautiful. Take your birdwatching binoculars if you don't have opera glasses

GoodOnPaper · 11/03/2026 17:58

Row A of the balcony would generally be much better than the amphitheatre row G as you’re further forward, lower and no-one right in front of you.

There are various websites which show you the view from different seats, eg: https://seatplan.com/london/royal-opera-house-venue/seating-plan/

Thank you.

I've tried these websites, but there aren't any photos from my specific seats.

I'm not sure though; the balcony seat is right round one side, and there's a picture from a similar seat, in fact a few seats further in, that looks like the view is quite restricted.

begonefoulclutter · 11/03/2026 18:07

Row A as a pp says, since there's nobody in front of you, but is it further to one side?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 11/03/2026 18:07

@ConstanzeMozart
The seat in the balcony is restricted view. The amphitheater seat is a bit better.

If you go to any other performance that has those seats free, you can click on them to get the actual view and any relevant comments about the seat.

yes, right at one edge/end of the row.

I've been going painstakingly through them but it's getting tedious! Was hoping for some personal insights, but I know I'm just being lazy.

yes, right at one edge/end of the row.

I'd go for the other one then. What are you seeing? It is better to be higher up and miss out on the top half of the scenery than to be on one side and miss half the entrances/exits and business at the sides.

The chance anyone having sat in both those exact seats, and remembering is quite remote 😃
The balcony one looks awful.

You'd be surprised, I'm on another forum and some of those posters are there all the time. How they can afford it beats me.

Well, there are some other obscure seats with pics and reviews, so I'll keep checking back. You never know!

also meant to say, yes, I'm edging towards the amphitheatre one. The balcony one is a bad angle.

Giselle. Yes, I think I agree.

@ConstanzeMozart Ask on balletcoforum.com - they'll know. There's a section called 'performances seen'. Go on there and ask.

Dashling · 11/03/2026 18:19

You could make the case for either. In the balcony seat you’ll miss about a third of the stage. You won’t have to worry about people in front of you though and will feel more in the action. You’ll be able to see half the orchestra, which is bonus. you’ll be able to see into the wings on one side, which I like but you might not.

in the amphitheatre you’ll be more central but those seats are very high and a long way back- I always feel it’s all a bit far away. And the seats are pretty narrow up there.

I would definitely go for the balcony personally but it’s personal choice.

Oh, it's tough when you put it that way!
I don't generally feel bothered by people in front of me, partly because I'm quite tall and partly because I guess I've been to a lot of dance etc and am just used to it.
I do love seeing the orchestra. Never had a seat where I could see into the wings, so don't know how I'd feel about that.
Think I've been in amphitheatre before, but it was so long ago I don't remember where, or anything about it. I don't mind a narrow seat.
Choices!

(On the performance I was looking at, G67 was sold so I couldn't click on it.)

It does say the Amphi seat has no arms, the Balcony one is a loose seat.

I'd pick the Amphitheatre, unless you want a good view into the stage right wing!

I would suggest front of balcony but if you go onto the website as if to book it shows you the view.

LIZS · 11/03/2026 18:25

Ah see pics now, amphitheatre one is a better stage view. We often go no armrest/limited legroom seats.

ChristineBrooke · 11/03/2026 18:28

Depends on your eyesight. The amphitheatre is miles away from the stage, though the acoustics are good. I would go for the balcony every time.

Not amazing even with my glasses.
Hmm. More food for thought.
