You forgot me, harpsi - and you know how useful I am on classical music questions.

barnstaple · 18/04/2008 20:52

It doesn't annoy me, I just tune it out. Though he's not my favourite piano/harpsichord player.

No, I quite like him humming. he's just so wrapped up in it all, you almost can't see where he ends and the notes begin.

I love them, passionately.

(and you warmed a Biologists heart by listing me with the real musos! )

SoMuchToBits · 18/04/2008 20:56

It annoys me. I also find harpsichord music played on the piano ermmmm, just, well.... wrong somehow.

Sorry, I'm sure lots of other people like it, but it's not for me. I like it on the harpsichord, but just not the piano.

harpsichordcarrier · 18/04/2008 20:57

I remember you posting MB about the Brandenburg Concertos, hearing a section of them when you were doing something else and how it lifted your heart (or some such) and that music was like a drug to you so I count you as a real muso
I thought I might be alone in this (apart from SL of course )
everyone raves about how wonderful these are and I have never got further than about five minutes in
I think I may be a philistine

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 20:57

I enjoy them on the piano and the harpsichord.

But I have to be in the right 'mood' for each

harpsichordcarrier · 18/04/2008 20:57

hurrah! for SMTB
yes I agree about the piano too
but then I am somewhat biased towards the harpsichord

funny old thing

SorenLorensen · 18/04/2008 21:01

My Dolly Parton Greatest Hits CD arrived today - Jolene...Jolene...Jolene...Jo- lee-ee-eeene (I don't hum along - I sing. Loudly).

harpsichordcarrier · 18/04/2008 21:05

have you heard the White Stripes version of Jolene?
I once saw Jack White singing it at the Reading Festival
that night we made a little baby
(TMI?)

I haven't - I'll see if it's on YouTube.

Awww, we made a little baby on the night of the Manchester IRA bomb...also probably TMI

SorenLorensen · 18/04/2008 21:16

Reading 02 or 04, Harpsi? Both are on You Tube.

Ah, well, I'm not anti-piano but I just like harpsichord music on ahem - harpsichords. Later stuff is fine on pianos.

Anyway I only play the clarinet (definitely post-Bach) so what do I know about it?

MrsJohnCusack · 18/04/2008 21:38

really just don't like it at all anyway
humming really annoying
piano instead of harpsichord really annoying
whole shebang surrounding him really pretentious

and anyway find the Goldberg Variations really dull TBH (philistine alert)

my friend here is called Jolene. NOt after the song though , apparently. Shame

harpsichordcarrier · 18/04/2008 22:18

2002 SL
maybe I should try another version of the Goldberg Variations with less humming?

OP posts:
Bink · 19/04/2008 09:49

I'm glad to see this is a question that requires no musical sophistication at all (I think, but ooh, maybe there is a sophisticated take on it) but just gut-ness. No I can't do humming, any more than I like my (very dear) pa nodding like a chicken in a concert when the exciting bits come on.

(I suspect I do nodding too, but then I'm inside the nod, so that's OK.)

MrsBadger · 20/04/2008 15:45

I hum myself so don;t usually hear him

or play 'em in the car where the background noise level is high

Winetimeisfinetime · 20/04/2008 15:52

I find the humming a bit irritating too. I wish I could play like him though - I think my playing would benefit from some loud humming in the more difficult passsages to disguise the duff notes

I've always wanted to ask if you do have a harpsichord harpsichordcarrier? I would love a real harpsichord - I have a very old Roland electric one but it's not very satisfying to play as it doesn't sound very authentic.

EffiePerine · 20/04/2008 15:52

I like the humming - there are some great youtube clips of him singing along (and sitting on a ridiculously low piano stool ).
