Where would you go?

UK? Northern Europe?

Full time or part time?

I am sixty years old, have one year, and have some funds but not excessive amounts.

I am serious about wanting to be taught properly using traditional methods initially.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

There a lots of ateliers in the uk that train the same sight size methods you’d learn in Florence. Lavender hill studios I think is one in London, Sarum studio in sailsbury too

And finally, just to let you know for closure, my Belgian Twitter friend say "Just got answer back from that lady in Antwerp. It’s negative. They work with acrylic paints and water soluble paints." Sorry! At least we tried... It's a wonderful thng you're aiming for. Best wishes.

Oh that's interesting. I love Monet, although I've never tried to paint like him. But the colours, and the choice of subjects are just brilliant. (Plus I adore his garden at Giverney and own a cookery book of his recipes with the best chocolate cake recipe ever.)

If you like learning more about the history of the paintings, do you know about the Open University's free Art History online lessons? https://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/free-courses?filter=date/grid/90/all/all/all/all I studied Art History with the OU when it was affordable (ish) and these are from those courses. Completely fab!

I’m really interested in these lessons too, thank you once again CrystalSingerFan!

You might get on with a school of art like Chelsea or Leith where they teach technical artists’ skills. Not the conceptual art thinking type courses that many university art courses offer to undergrads.

Elektra1 · 02/08/2024 07:50

One of my friends is a commercially successful artist who paints in oils. He taught himself. There must be YouTube channels etc which you could get tips from? Evening classes at your local adult education centre?

Scarletrunner · 02/08/2024 10:52

There’s a Turner exhibition at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle at the moment if anyone is near there.

I am not near Newcastle but a family member will be in September; will check if it’s still on!

I'd buy a few Artists magazines and have a look through them.
Lots of courses advertised within them.

The Artist
Artists and Illustrators
Leisure Painter
LandScape

They will give you lots of ideas of what will suit you

softmauve · 02/08/2024 13:08

To add...
Go to your local art supply shops as often courses are advertised there.

Oops. Forgot to link to this other Antwerp arty college mentioned by Flemish Twitter friend. Looks a bit uni-oriented with BA/MA/etc courses, but they might do Continuing Education classes. Plus some of the website's in English. https://www.sintlucasantwerpen.be/en/sintlucasantwerpen/
