If you wanted to learn how to paint with oils as an adult to a high standard?

Treeswherewesit89 · 21/07/2024 20:48

Where would you go?

UK? Northern Europe?

Full time or part time?

I am sixty years old, have one year, and have some funds but not excessive amounts.

I am serious about wanting to be taught properly using traditional methods initially.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Thank you so much namechanger

All of those recommendations look superb but I think USA might be a bit far to manage logistically.

Mainly looking in UK, France, Belgium and The Netherlands as I have family accommodation within striking distance of those places.

Ah, Belgium! Great place. I have a Belgian (Flemish) Twitter friend. His daughter did something creative like help restore Antwerp Town Hall. I'd happily ask if he knows anything useful. Do you speak Flemish/French/both? I suspect that might make a difference to what's available.

Paint Coach on You tube is good for beginners

pinacollateral · 22/07/2024 18:03

Can you draw, OP?

A lot of people try to learn to paint before they can draw. This is like running before you can walk.

Painting is drawing but with 1000 more things to think about.

If you haven't done much drawing recently, I would highly recommend drawing first as a grounding, ideally attending a life drawing class.

Also, why do you want to paint and what do you want to paint?

Yes I do draw a bit. There's room for improvement though. I understand how important it is as a foundation to painting and I have done some drawing classes. I am interested in still life and rural landscapes.

I speak a bit of French, and only a few phrases of Dutch and Flemish sadly. But thank you for any recommendations. I have relations near Antwerp.

@Treeswherewesit89 oops sorry. Not sure how it isn’t working. Perhaps try Googling Will Kemps art school. He’s fab. Also lots of free tutorials as well as paid ones, all superb value. His website is really worth spending time on as he gives loads of free content and advice out. Sorry about the link! Good luck and have fun. Art is therapy for me.

If you haven’t used oil before I’d look for a short introductory class first. Do you have an art school near you? They usually do art classes in the evening and this would be a great introduction to oils. There is lots to learn about using oil paint before you get down to the actual painting such as canvas prep, which mediums to use, brushes, and safe disposal of solvents. It’s so different from using watercolour or acrylic.

This would set you up nicely for a more advanced class, but I’d carefully consider how much the language of the country you chose might be a problem. Maybe consider a conversational language class too.

If you like landscapes, Andrew Tischler is another good artist to watch on YouTube. He also has online courses you can buy.

Martin Kinnear's Norfolk Painting School specialises in teaching the traditional oil painting methods, so you can then use those methods for producing contemporary oil paintings. He has had numerous articles in The Artist magazine. Courses vary from complete beginners to advanced.

I'd love to go there.

I agree with @Startingagainandagain - I did a BA in Painting at a London art uni and they never taught technique. It was all conceptual (I was fine with that).
The London art unis do short courses and summer courses that focus on technique - I did a drawing one before my BA and it was great. Unis in other countries do them too, could be fun to combine with a holiday. You can check out who the tutor is and their work.
