I don't get something in "Englishman in New York"

"I don't take coffee, I take tea, my dear"

OK, I get that.

"I like my toast done on one side"

What?
On one side of the bread only? Or on the side plate and not the main plate? Or what? And how is this especially "English"?...

I'm spending too much time wondering about this. back to work!!

do you know I had a friend at school who did this - toast was ALWAYS soggy on one side - vile...

Thought it was an Irish trait.

MAMAZON · 07/02/2008 12:36

have no idea.

though if my mum cooks cheese on toast she only grills one side of the bread, then puts the cheese on the "raw" side and then grils it.

??

JodieG1 · 07/02/2008 12:38

Mamazon I do that too. Butter first then cheese. If you toast both sides first then when you put the cheese on it burns.

Threadworm · 07/02/2008 12:38

I have always wondered about that lyric.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2008 12:38

yes, I immediately thought of cheese on toast being done on one side [ obviously should get out more]

WaynettaSlob · 07/02/2008 12:39

I have seen people only toast one side of their bread - don't know if it's an English thing or an Irish thing - either way it's nuts!!!

MAMAZON · 07/02/2008 12:39

so thats decided then..its a refference to cheese on toast.

i shall spread the word

OliviaMumsnet · 07/02/2008 12:40

Shouldn't it be I like my egg done on one side (as opposed to over easy?)

pagwatch · 07/02/2008 12:41

You are only supposed to toast toast on one side ! Good grief, what is this country coming to?
It was only when people picked up the terrible tacky toaster thing( probably from americans )that proper standards went to hell in a handcart.
You are lucky that you never had tea at DH's grandmother's house. I bet you would then try and slice it(...shudder !)

sakurarose39 · 07/02/2008 12:43

LOL!
The only thing I can think of is when they used to toast bread over a proper flame (in a fireplace) and they used to stick it on a toasting fork...and maybe (wait for it!)... it was only toasted on one side, because it would be too hot to take off and toast the other side...(or they couldn't be arsed to bother with the other side...)
so Sting would know all about that, I'm guessing...

Cremolafoam · 07/02/2008 12:44

arf UD i just heard that song on J Vine too. i have a cousin who only toasts on one side and he is a wierdo

sagitta · 07/02/2008 12:57

DH thinks it should only be done on one side...

Twiglett · 07/02/2008 12:58

Mamazon .. that is how one does cheese on toast though ..

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 07/02/2008 12:59

So which side do you add the butter?

I only toast on one side if I'm doing cheese on toast though.

pirategirl · 07/02/2008 13:01

i was thinking it may have been a sexaul preference reference, it being about Quentin Crisp.

I googled and got this

the link doesnt work tho.

raleighnet.org/Speak/2003/01/28/i-like-my-toast-done-on-one-side/here

pirategirl · 07/02/2008 13:03

ok so its not showing it at all now. well there was a ref to the kama sutra, and not to click unless you were an adult.

weird

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 13:09

Does Sting do tantric toasting, do we think?

OP posts:
chrissnow · 07/02/2008 13:09

I always thought he sang I like my toast done on both sides. making the new yorkers the weird one siders? . . (off to listen to police now)

pirategirl · 07/02/2008 13:10

lol @UD

chrissnow · 07/02/2008 13:14

OK UQD apologies. Have listened and checked. I have been wrong for years!! It is one side.
Sadly not the first time I've misheard lyrics. I sang "i'm a cilla black fan" and not "on a silver black phantom . . ." for Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf

I heard "a Cilla Black fan" too!!

Oh thank god. People have been p***g themselves laughing at me for years over this one.

OliviaMumsnet · 07/02/2008 13:20

And actually, if we're being "pendantic" (UQD) then you can't hear it in his accent when he talks if he's rhyming New Yalk with talk, can you?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 13:22

And to be even more pendantic (sic) surely they (the New Yorkers) have the accent, not the Englishman!
