Mary Poppins theatre tour...suitable for a 6 year old?

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 21:05

Just asking as the theatres seem to have an age guidance rating of 8+, although it doesn't say that under 8s can't go.

DD would be 6 by the time the tour gets near us. She adores the film Mary Poppins and I am sure she would love this.

She has been to the theatre before to see childrens productions, to the arena to see things like Disney on Ice,, CBeebies, etc. She has been to the ballet last year, and she saw the theatre production of Beauty and the Beast last year.

Is there anything about this production of Mary Poppins that I shouldbe wary of and any reason why she shouldn't go and enjoy it?

Thanks.

Will be watching this with interest at my DD's godmother has arranged for my two DDs to go at xmas and they are 6. From what I have heard it will be ok.

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:08

I don't know. Am trying to get tickets for Christmas time to take dd (who is 7). I think, from memory, there are mumsnetters who have taken their children - I think it's more a case of sitting still for that length of time than anything else (but your dd has been to stuff like the theatre before, hasn't she, so will probably be fine!).

LIZS · 27/11/2007 21:09

dd saw it in the summer in London for her 6th b'day . It was fine and there were plenty of younger kids there. There is scene where toys come to life to punish the children and it is dark and dramatic.

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:10

aah thanks Lizs. I was wondering what it was!

mrsmaddyd · 27/11/2007 21:10

I am going next Wednesday with two 5 year old girls. Can let you know how i get on

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:11

Well, it's rather, well, sort of NOT like the film. It's quite grown-up in a way, and much more like the books,so things like the park scene is all in black and white with slow moving statues, rather than technicolour dancing penguins etc. I imagine it is 8 plus for that reason.

We went when it opened, and it wasn't a riotous success and we all declared it 'unmagical' [theatre snobs]

My top tip is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, god that's good. Is that coming to you?

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:12

have you been taking them to the matinee shows?

I can probably only get tickets for the 7/7.30pm one.

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 21:12

Do let me know how it goes.

I think we will get tickets. Could go to Birmingham in the late summer, but Manchester would be better location - trouble is not until next December!!! Tickets for latter not yet on sale, so waiting for when they go on sale to get in there quick!

I was going to go to a matinee if I can simply because of travelling home. If I was closer I would have looked at evenings too though.

Took DD to the 8pm showing of Disney on Ice last FRiday, and DD was fine with that.

We saw a midweek matinee, they had a few extra shows over the summer holidays.

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:14

But Mary Poppins isn't remotely like that.

I'm pooping everybody's matinee party aren't I?

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:14

lol at the theatre snobs

have you seen The Sound of Music or Grease (other options)? Think Fiddler on the Roof might be too much for dd.

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:15

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

It is the TOPS. Especially for 6 y-olds. It's got it all.

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:15

think Chitty has finished in London though

mrsmaddyd · 27/11/2007 21:16

We are going becuase alot of the year ones have been and raved about it. We have also done disney on ice, numerous pantos and kids shows and they have always loved it and been very well behaved. Theres something about the theater that has my kids enthralled even from a young age.

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:17

Oh I'm sure you'll have a lovely time Mrsd. [smiles weakly]

Perhaps it's just us? Yes it's just us. Have fun!

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 21:17

But DD loves MP and isn't so bothered by CCBB. Plus for us needs, ideally, to be something that is touring up North a bit, not just stuck in a London theatre.

I would think Grease was too grown up for my DD. Too much swearing to start with.

Like the idea of Lion King, but again only in London.

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:19

(but this isn't the MP she loves Hula, that's what I'm saying, it's not like the film, not in the way that other musicals are like the film - it's like the books. Does she love the books? They're quite dark you see).

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:20

Actually I'm going to shut up. I feel like the Grinch or something pouring cold water on your theatre trips.

And WHAT am I saying? DH is taking ds1 (10) and ds2 (8) to Les Mis in December FGS!!!

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:22

have you seen any of my other options?

Re Grease, the swearing wouldn't bother us/her but I am slightly concerned it would be a lot more 'grown up' than the film.

I don't want to have to sit through Joseph though. Not that keen on Lion King.

Maybe Fiddler would not be that bad.

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 21:23

No, not read the books. So is it not all the songs she will know and love?

DD is a real musical fan...not sure what alternative we could look at really, well not without having the expense of a London trip which I don't want to do.

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:23

Oh no, sorry. Am going to see Sound of Music with dd though, while the other lot sing bawdy bar songs and stirring laments from the barricades

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:23

I love Fiddler but have only seen it as an adult before I had kids so never bothered thinking whether it was suitable!

foxinsocks · 27/11/2007 21:25

Ahh maybe we'll do Sound of Music then. Will see what tickets I can get as we can only really go v near Christmas so I doubt they'll be much left anyway.

ahundredtimes · 27/11/2007 21:25

Oh go Hula, please go. I'm sure it'll be great. I think it's just that we did CCBB and that was such a massive success that we then tried to repeat the experience with MP and it didn't quite work. That's probably why I'm sounding so jaundiced. I feel a bit bad. I was just trying to answer your question. [nervous grin]
