Mary Poppins theatre tour...suitable for a 6 year old?

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 21:05

Just asking as the theatres seem to have an age guidance rating of 8+, although it doesn't say that under 8s can't go.

DD would be 6 by the time the tour gets near us. She adores the film Mary Poppins and I am sure she would love this.

She has been to the theatre before to see childrens productions, to the arena to see things like Disney on Ice,, CBeebies, etc. She has been to the ballet last year, and she saw the theatre production of Beauty and the Beast last year.

Is there anything about this production of Mary Poppins that I shouldbe wary of and any reason why she shouldn't go and enjoy it?

Thanks.

Have seen Grease twice but a longtime ago now and can't remember if it would be suitable for a child. Doesn't really follow the story exactly, a bit more put tgether to get the songs in IYSWIM. Sorry can't help with if it is apporpriate.

our friends took their 3 year old who is mad for mary poopins and she loved it so a 6 year old should, hopefully, be fine. It is a great producion. There is a slightly dark scene in the nursery when the toys get cross with jane and michael and that would be the bit that they may get a bit upset at but the rest of it is just fantastic dancing and singing.

Well, tickets not on sale till New Year apparently for Manchester so shall have to wait and think a bit anyway. Thanks for letting me know it is different to the film tough. Might have to hunt books out now to see how different, etc.

I completely agree with you ahundred- mine love going to the theatre too, and in fact like the MP books, but found MP no more than OK. They weren't remotely scared, just rather bored. It was good in many ways but like you we found it paled in comparison with CCBB.

LIZS · 27/11/2007 21:30

There were several different songs with a few familiar ones. Think I enjoyed it more than the kids ! Special effects were good but they are too savvy now so looked for the strings.

mrsmaddyd · 27/11/2007 21:30

Im getting worried now Do you not think they will like it then a hundredtimes???

pointydog · 27/11/2007 21:31

It is dark. Actually souns quite good. I know people with 6 year olds who saw it and they liked it.

LIZS · 27/11/2007 21:32

They'll be fine . dd enjoyed it more than ds (9)

I feel bad too though ahundredtimes. I don't want to spoil anyone's party- the scenery was really good, and the songs were good, it was just err very long. The children didn't hate it or anything, just found it boring in places

My dd is about the same age as yours Hula and I am undecided about whether to take her (I will be running a trip to Manchester). Dd is an October birthday so she will be 6 by the time it comes to Manchester.

There is one particulary dark, quite nightmarish scene in Mary Poppins that is not in the film. The character of Jane gets in a temper and the toys come alive and "teach the children a lesson they will never forget".

We're going to Lion King in February half term, I've got a coach load going down.

islandofsodor · 28/11/2007 17:16

Whoops dd is 6 now she will be 7 then

Maidamess · 28/11/2007 17:18

I'm sorry but I didn't really like Mary Poppins when I saw it. I thought it was too wordy, and with the exception of one or two dance numbers, a bit dull!

If I could, I would see The Lion King, with children.

Hulababy · 02/12/2007 20:49

Only problem with The Lion King is that we have seen the shortened versions at Disey already, so was really looking for something different to that.

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread but we went to see 'Merry poppins' and we loved it. I left with my mum my 4 years old DS and only took with us my older son and I was upset that I listened to the ticket office man who suggested that it's for slightly older kids. I can't wait to take my younger child to the show. I suppose evey child is different and evey adult as well and some people would find it wordy and uninspiring but I was really not interested to go in the first place thinking that no one could make it better then Disney and I was pleasantly surprised. The only thing is they have different performers on different days and probably it depends on who will be performing.

We went to see Mary Poppins and imo it is too dark for a 6 yr old.
Lion King is a good idea, when we went to see Lion king ds sat to far on the end of the seat, the seat flipped up (he is an incredible slight boy) and he flipped up and over the seat and landed head first in the lady in fronts lap. Which would of been funny but, I tried to grab him and gave the ladies husband a thick ear with my elbow.

Just to let Hula know we had a fab time last night. The grls loved it, sang along, clapped and danced. Each scene was just enough time not too long for them to get bored. Very colourfull!!!

Yes you could see some strings but the kids dont see them, its just us adults that look for them.

Yes its a long show but its the Theater isnt it and you dont want to be short changed.

Recomended for 5 years plus as little ones will get restless

fedda · 06/12/2007 14:12

i'm glad someone else enjoyed it.

Roobie · 06/12/2007 14:20

I'm taking my 5yo dd to see Mary Poppins on 22nd Dec - tockets were a blimmin' fortune so I hope she enjoys it! I suspect she'll just love the whole occasion and being out with me on our own more than anything. We'll do lunch first and look at the Christmas window displays etc - I can't wait!

fedda · 06/12/2007 16:51

Good luck, Roobie.

Oohhh we loved MP!!!! Adored Matthew Bournes choreography - Step in time was spectacular and Burts upside down tap dance was amazing. We saw Laura Michelle Kelly in the title role when it first opened and it was my dd and ds's first west end show. It inspired my dd to audition for the role of Jane Banks and led to a very happy, exciting but ultimately unsuccessful few months. Saw the show again this summer, again with my dd, and Scarlett Strallen played the lead. She was excellent but quite different from LMK.
