Moondog, Caribbeanqueen, me. Anyone else?

Rather keen on Maupassant and all, in fact any of that lot especially the ones who died of syphillis, kind of gives them an edge

Therese Raquin is one of my favourite books

PrincessPeaHead · 25/01/2007 09:43

a friend of mine's sister is currently being therese raquin at the national theatre - saw it a couple of weeks ago - brilliant. worth a trip (if it is still on)

sunnywong · 25/01/2007 09:48

oh wow!
My favourite book and all. Love a bit of slow poisoning - or is that La Bete Humaine

actually I haven't read that many, what other titles would you recommend?

Lol Suzy- 'who died of syphillis, kind of gives them an edge'

We're not getting back into dangerous Libertine/Johnny Depp territory again are we?!

franca70 · 25/01/2007 09:51

I loved Therese Raquin and Le ventre de Paris. I also loved Maupassant's short stories. Read all of these when I was 18-20 yrs old. Perhaps it's time to reread them.

sunnywong · 25/01/2007 09:51

he still looked HOT even with the pox

but back to Emile, was he hot? Not for ladies I'll wager

memememeeee

sw did you see my comment re germinal on other thread - can you get it on R4 listen again down below?

sunnywong · 25/01/2007 09:54

oh no I didn't! let me have a look at the R4 website, as long as Martin Jarvis isn't in it I'll give it a listen.

MrsJohnCusack · 25/01/2007 09:54

I've only read Therese Raquin and Germinal, but loved them

i should read some more - thanks for making me think of it sunny

PrincessPeaHead · 25/01/2007 09:55

therese raquin was a boating "accident" suzy
poisoning was la bete humaine (flore's mother)

fishie · 25/01/2007 09:56

l'assommoir is fab too. la bete humain is ok. they are quite diff to get hold of, i once imagined reading the whole rougon moqwotsit series but that just impossible.

TinyGang · 25/01/2007 09:59

Seem to remember reading Nana too - a very long time ago. That's quite a racy Zola book too iirc.

Hmm I think I must revisit Zola too.

Caribbeanqueen · 25/01/2007 10:00

I remember starting to read them all, in order, in the original.

I got about half way through the list and then other things took over.

I think it's time to start again. Not sure how I'll find the time now though.

Dinosaur · 25/01/2007 10:02

Same as MrsJohnCusack.

Marina · 25/01/2007 10:14

PPH, my first ever boyfriend is stage managing that production!
Shamefully I dodged as much of the Balzac/Zola stuff as I could at university (taught by a zombie alas) but do love Therese Raquin and also Gustave Flaubert.

TinyGang · 25/01/2007 10:16

Ohh yes Mdm Bovary is brill too.

While were on French writers, I also love Colette.

Caribbeanqueen · 25/01/2007 10:23

I could never cope with Balzac. I found 15 pages to describe one sideboard a little excessive.

Marina · 25/01/2007 12:32

Balzac is where I step off the Francophile trail too. Au Bonheur des Dames, yawn yawn. Cousine Bette, zzzz.
Did anyone have to do any Duhamel for A Level ? Le Notaire du Havre, peopled with the most annoying parents and offspring ever...

sunnywong · 25/01/2007 12:42

My first boyfriend did La Bete Humaine for A level, which is how I got into Zola. With hindsight and bit more maturity I 'm astonished it was every taught in a boys' school as it is the height of mysoginism and women-fearing literature. But then again ....

OP posts:
marthamoo · 25/01/2007 12:43

Doesn't he play for Chelsea?

MarsLady · 25/01/2007 12:43

And me! I read my first Zola when I was about 11. Loved it!

Dinosaur · 25/01/2007 12:44

LOL martha, I was going to post something about THAT Zola but then I thought that all the brainy mnetters would think I was thick...

He was very ugly, wasn't he? Sort of like a more exotic version of Peter Beardsley?

filthymindedvixen · 25/01/2007 12:45

OOh, I've only read Therese Raquin but it's one of my all time favourites....I studied it for french o level and to this day, can remember random sentences..
'' Elle n'avait jamais vu un homme''

and then the ridiculous english translations of other sentences like ''Golly, I shouldn't like to take a header into that brew'' etyc PMSL

marthamoo · 25/01/2007 12:47

Well, that makes two of us, Dino - I don't know anything about either Zola (I had to google to find out which team he played for). I think I'll go and find a Celeb BB thread

sunnywong · 25/01/2007 12:49

don't you have dog shit to monitor on the public highway MM?
