It's interesting what people think of as culture

Not being judgmental in any way, I think its interesting to see the many and varied topics on the Culture Vulture board - especially when it was first introduced some people thought it would never take off!

Totally agree! Have often thought "get thee to chat"

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 19:19

Ds1 asked me what culture was the other day and it's really hard to define.

Cam · 12/02/2006 10:58

Davros, you've exposed my carefully worded post for what it really was straightaway haven't you [ghastly unforgivable snob emoticon]

One definition of culture = intellectual development

That's not to say popular culture doesn't have its place too

Some people consider East Enders and Corrie as part of British culture.

Eastenders and Corrie are part of British culture.

"Culture" isn't just "high culture" you know!

expatinscotland · 12/02/2006 11:06

Oi! I watch EE! It's funny like. Not Corrie, tho. DH hates it and calls it 'Boronation Street' or worse .

Cam · 12/02/2006 11:22

Within this recognition of "high" culture, presumably there is "low" culture, and in any case, is defining culture differently (ie as a particular form of civilization, not necessarily an improvement)

oooh may I join you in pseuds corner?

ooh yeds a soy latte and organic millet muffin for me please

well yes there is POP culture, but culture without a signifier would generally be considered to be things of Art that are improving or beautiful (speaking off the top of my head)
it is very subjective yes but that is not to say there isn't some common ground

Cam · 12/02/2006 11:27

The irony of EE and the other one being mentioned so soon on a thread in Culture Vultures about the meaning of culture is brilliant.

Love you mumsnetters

What I think is ironic, and with my Certificate of Social Sciences clutched firmly in my fist, is that you can quibble over high culture, low culture, and what may or may not be culture.... because, whether it fits anyone highbrow viewpoints or not, it IS all culture! Culture is anything which has meaning within the daily lives of different segments of society.. so whether we are talking 'chav culture' or fine art.. it's all culture!

But EE and the Street can be discussed on the tv thread.

well tell us what culture means then suzy, as you are Fully Qualified...

suzywong · 12/02/2006 14:38

No no no no, not Brum. Although we did get Stuart Hall down for a lecture - once.

Portsmouth Poly. Don't ask why I chose it, well ok then go on, it was so I would still be less than an hour away from my pedestrian and dullard childhoold sweetheart.

Am going to do a post grad diploma in it at a real University here in August.

suzywong · 12/02/2006 14:39

I'm sorry I can't do that just now Harps as I am watching the climax of Most Haunted on cable.

The real Stuart Hall is far more sombre, I'm afraid.

snafu · 12/02/2006 14:41

God, I love MOst Haunted, though...
