Just listened to this program, stunning, if you missed it, see if it is on Listen Again. What a treat!

I listened to it while cleaning a very grubby kitchen. Dh thought I had finaly flipped as I was sobbing my heart out to the 'Recordate'

And the last movement, Fuck me, it is amazing. If there is a heaven then those sopranos have drilled a way in for little Mozart!

Honestly it was a real treat.

thanks mb
I sang this last month and it was just sublime
will go and replay it to get me through the grim task of cleaning my lving room, or at least trying to find the floor

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 11:40

I once sang it at midnight, as part of a mass to park the aniversary of his death.....I can still belt out the alto line, my children think I am insane, 'Why is Mummy singing in a strange language?'

They said of the last 16 bars of the recodate, 'These don't belong of this Earth'. How true. Mozart and Bach are the two main reasons I'm agnostic not athiest!

dd1 sings along with me in the car sometimes to the choral stuff I am learning... the sweetest thing was to hear her singing "dixit! dixit dixit!"
did you hear much of the Bach thing on radio 3 over Christmas. the Mass in B Minor was wonderful I thought.
I agree about the atheism thing btw... listening to the opening of the St John's Passion is enough to stir even this hardened atheist...
do you still sing mb?

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 11:52

I was only ever a keen amater. I have sun with a few different choirs, but since having the kids I don't have the time

When they are older I'll join the local choral soc. I was in one in Aylsbury that was fun, sang lots of requems and masses, loved them all. We also used to do a fund raising musical evening when we sold a ticket for food and the concert, the food was in a tent in a supporters garden, the concert in a fantastic early norman church.

I was astonished to find out that dd can sing, really sing! She did it in the car and I nearly crashed the thing! The school is part of the cathedral, so she is getting good training, even if she isn't in the choir (could be...they have hinted as much but it is a big comittment).

I love music so much, it can just stop me dead in my tracks. Dh thinks I am quite mad . I would have gone into music if I hadn't been lured by science

you'er right of course. Bach is the best argument for God I wish I had thought of that.
oh go back and sing again mb, I love it and I find it a lifesaver. I went back to rehearse when dd2 was a week old she slept happily in her car seat in the next pew....

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 12:20

it must be the most amazing work to sing

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 12:23

A few months ago I rushed into work a little late and someone was playing part of Bach's Well tempered Clavier (sp?) in the hall.....it was sublime, transporting and magical because it was so unexpected! It was as if someone had opened a door onto a different world. It quite made my day. Dh just doesn't 'get' music in the way I do, he likes it, but for me it is almost like a drug.

I just played the Credo from the C min Mass....astonishing. How can anyone listen to that without a huge grin on their faces? The stink part is just so joyful and everyone singing over it, belting out what they belive in! And when I sang it it was the closest I ever got to believing in it!

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 28/12/2005 13:24

this is an exceptional recording and interpretation of the well tempered clavier
yes I loved singing it and insisted on doing so despite the fact I was two weeks postnatal...
I would have dragged myself from the labour ward if I had had to [not actually joking emoticon]
I am going to a Sing Moz Req from Scratch in the Albert Hall in May...

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 13:41

Lookes good, I am only familier with the Schiff recording, so this would be a good shake up, by the sound of it.

Might put that on my wish list for my birthday

I wanted Et in carnatus est to be sunf at my wedding but figured it wouldn;t make sense without the Credo so we had Laudamus Te instead.

Dh is a classical singer and one of his college friends sang for us.

I love the Requiem and C Minor Mass but my absolute favourite Requiem is Faure which I want at my funeral.

Blandmum · 29/12/2005 08:41

I listened to the Laudamus Te just after I saw dd for the first time on the scan, I was in the car driving back to work and the tap (that long ago!) was at that point! Fantastic. Allways makes me think of that moment , it was so apt!

Fantastic that you dh is a clasical singer!

How fab, your ds1 translating!

I never had any of this growing up myself, there was never any music in the house. My bro and I are both manic about music! Funny old world!

I'm meant to be singing this again in March too (will have to be without going to ANY rehearsals though as they start mid Jan and baby is due 22nd - never mind, I know it back to front).

Faure requiem lovely but my favourite requiem has to be the Durufle. Sang that last year and it is wonderful, all those crunchy chords, ahhhhhhhhhh

Enideepmidwinter · 29/12/2005 14:18

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 29/12/2005 14:19

I am a soprano (so is tortoiseshell I think)
mmm I am not too sure about the Durufle's requiem. I thought it was rather... bitty

Blandmum · 29/12/2005 14:24

PPP, I've done the Drufle as well! Fab!

I also like the Nelson Mass very much, great orchestration
