I think I would find this just too difficult as I was and am a total bookworm. However the authors that are still on my shelves after my latest clearout are:
Diana Wynne Jones
Joan Aitkin
Margaret Mahy
Anne Fine

All of these read many many times, especially the Diana Wynne Jones, probably my favourite comfort read.

My only problem is waiting for dd and ds to be old enough to enjoy them too (although there are good Anne Fine's and Margaret Mahy's for younger children).

Flum · 02/11/2005 17:44

Heidi
The Twins at St Clares - Enid Blyton

frannyandzooey · 02/11/2005 17:44

Ballet Shoes, the Pennington books by K.M.Peyton, Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones, The Little Prince, the Ruth Manning Sanders folk tale collections, Malory Towers, all of E. Nesbit, the Carbonel books...

I could go on. Can you guess I was a big reader and still collect children's books?

Skyler · 02/11/2005 17:46

Oh yes Anne of Green Gables!!

princesspeahead · 02/11/2005 17:46

does anyone remember a brilliant book called aristide about a little french boy who was playing on his lilo in the sea at Calais and accidentally floated all the way to england? He had a great adventure speaking no english and dressed only in his swimming trunks.
I LOVED that book and haven't seen hide nor hair of it despite internet searching etc. Tell me I haven't made it up?!

frannyandzooey · 02/11/2005 17:46

Ooh hc, the Bagthorpe saga! Brilliant, I had forgotten them. I still have the books.

puff · 02/11/2005 17:51

Ooh it's all coming back now!

I also adored the Hans Christian Andersen fairytales - especially The Little Match Girl which always made me sob.

The collection I had was so beautifully illustrated - I have been searching for years for the particular copy I had and have never found it. My pesky little brother destroyed mine !

JoolsToo · 02/11/2005 17:53

Teddy Robinson and Milly Molly Mandy

cupcakes · 02/11/2005 17:57

Anne of Green Gables
The children of Green Knowe (not sure of the spelling)
The waterbabies

when I was younger -
Dennis the Dragon
How Foal forgot to be Frightened
The Little Shunting Engine

Loved all the horsey books too .... Elizabeth Goudge's "The Little White Horse" and also My Friend Flicka/Thunderhead. Also recall avidly swapping another series of horsey books at primary school (c 1979) although can't remember what they were called.

northender · 02/11/2005 18:17

The Naughtiest Girl series, Famous Five, Five Find outers, St Clares........bit of a Blyton theme I think.

dizzymama · 02/11/2005 18:23

When I was younger it was 'The Tiger who came to tea' and then 'the Box of Delights' which I now have on DVD and the whole family watches on the run up to Christmas as one of our things!!
