Hello all,

I need your help. I am looking for ideas for a project I'm doing. What portraits or painters would your kids recognise (whether they know the name of the artist or not is not important!)

I'll reveal all later but your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

sharklet · 06/09/2005 16:50

I'm looking specifically for portraits - kids would recognise preferaby of men but it doesn't really matter.

Age group wise hmmm I suppose 6 to 12 ish kind of age.

I'm so far looking at Warhol, Lichtenstein, Picasso, Magritte, Dali, Munch (the scream) etc. any more ideas are very very welcome.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Christ my kids wouldn't have a clue - not alltogether sure I would either!

philippat · 06/09/2005 16:58

do they have to be 'high' art?

there are lots of illustrators that are very recognisable from a bit of a younger age

Dick Bruna (miffy) and by association Mondrian
Maurice Sendak
Dr Seuss

would be the classics but dd (3) can recognise Axel Scheffer, Nicholas Allen, Nick Sharratt (not name them obviously but recognise that books by them are by the same artist)

Cam I don't think I couldn't have been confident of all of those at the end of my Art History degree!

Cam · 06/09/2005 16:58

Yes my dd would recognise Elvis and Marilyn by Warhol

philippat · 06/09/2005 17:00

do you want them to recognise the person, or the artist's style, or just feel comfortable in that they have seen it before?

sharklet · 06/09/2005 17:01

Doesn't have to be "high art" just famous stuff - recognisable stuff that a majority of kids would be likely to recognise - and if I am honest be interested in.

I've been looking at lots of the really bright stuff like warhol and the like as I have a feelig it will just be much more dynamic and might catch their imagination more.

Thanks for your ideas so far - any more very welcome.

What about some of the pre=raphaelites

philippat · 06/09/2005 17:07

Do you know the \link {http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0006642985/qid=1126022627/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-0382500-6653411\I Spy in Art books?}

I've always found kids are interested in an element of a picture that grabs them regardless of the artist (which is why I think the I Spy books work so well). In my experience (I'm an museum curator), it's only adults that care about the 'big name'.

philippat · 06/09/2005 17:09

ah pants
I Spy in Art books?

If you're looking at KS2 (7-11 year olds), try the QCA schemes of work for the Art & Design curriculum. That specifies the artists they should be introduced to. I find it rather limiting, myself, but it should help if you are looking for the ones they have been taught at school.

monkeytrousers · 09/09/2005 13:34

Henry VIII, ELizabeth II? Raphael did lots of portraits as did Da Vinci. Mostly just of rich merchants though, nobody famous.

monkeytrousers · 09/09/2005 13:36

Gainsbourgh

Janh · 09/09/2005 13:44

Henry VIII

Ever since I took dd to the Joshua Reynolds exhibition at the Tate she has been interested in portraits/self-portraits. Last week she decided to paint a self-portrait with acrylics, wearing her prettiest dress and a necklace!

There is a programme on tv tonight about self-portraits and why painters paint them which I must let her watch - 7.15 with Matthew Collinge
