Police application rejected

Just wondering if there's anyone on here who knows anything about the police application vetting process?
My daughter applied, passed everything - all tests, interviews, vetting etc (including the relatives vetting). Was sent email saying she had passed and would start in September and then today received an email saying that after consideration her application had been rejected as "recent criminal activity had come to light that may influence her judgement" (words to that affect but I can't remember the exact wording).
Does this mean that something has happened recently since her application or could it be historical? What crime could of been committed? Thank you

I think you need to ask your daughter. Has she smoked any weed, for example? Ever shoplifted when she was younger? Unpaid speeding ticket? It sounds like she's failed to declare something that has come up on an enhanced DBS or background check, or failed to declare a potential connection to a known criminal/gang.

Usually the crime itself isn't the issue, it's the failure to declare it.

Your dd might know

You’ll need to ask your daughter what she’s been up to! If she believes it’s a genuine error, she could appeal.

It's not my daughter, she emailed asking who, what? Etc and they emailed back saying it was someone that was vetted as part of her application (not herself) and they can't tell her who because of data protection.

Ah, so its likely a close family member has now gained a criminal record

She already passed a DBS/background check for her previous job. She's never been in trouble at all and only started driving this March so no speeding tickets etc yet

That's what the email implies - it specifically says "recent".

Does your local paper have a ‘week in court’ section? Our does, so you could try Googling the names of family. It’s odd though, if they’re considered close enough to need vetting, surely you’d know if one of them had done something that bad?

Surely this has to be a sibling or parent/grandparent?

Good idea, I've no idea but I'll check thanks

It must be devastating for her but she will have had to fill out the details of siblings, parents and I think grandparents, aunts and uncles and in laws so one from that list will have been involved in criminality recently.

Vetting is now more robust since the David Carrick case. It's possible that they ran further checks which has flagged something up.

Definitely not her sibling or parents and I'm fairly confident it's not her grandparents unless it was something fairly minor 50 plus years ago - they are all in their 80s.

Exactly why we're so confused. She has emailed so hopefully she can find out when whatever it is happened at least.

It's probably because of recent misbehaviour/activity/charges involving someone she lives with , or a close relative. Has she acquired a new flatmate or boyfriend ?

She is devastated. She has emailed and hopefully will get some insight to what has happened.

Could you ask around the family? Someone may know something you don't.

Who did she put down on the vetting form?

Anyone she's had to declare knowing they have ever had police involvement who could have got into more trouble recently?

Boyfriend? Girlfriend? Friends? Housemate? Ex partner?

Have she given a witness statement to the police for anything, ever? Ever been interviewed for anything, even as a witness? Been present during a police search of a house, car or person?

No, same partner for nearly 2 years and because we all live in the same town it would be quite difficult to hide a criminal conviction.

Sounds like someone she's closely related to or associated with has done something. Does it say criminal, as it could also be financial, such as declaring bankruptcy. What a shame for your daughter. I hope she gets an answer at least.

Not sure if it has changed but a friend of mine applied to the police many years ago. He had to give them a list of friends and family. As part of the application process they rang me up and interviewed me for about 10 minutes about him.

I suspect the process is a bit more rigorous than it used to be, given how difficult it is to get in to the police. It is quite likely that someone she knows has either been interviewed and said somethign they shouldn't, or someone she knows has a record, and by association they will then reject her application.

Ask her which relatives details she put down, and then look at that list as it'll be one of those people. It could be anything..affray, something protest related, a caution for cannabis etc

I think she put her parents, siblings, grandparents, partner and her immediate family. No housemates, never been a witness, no interviews except job ones. No to the rest too.

1 in 3 men have a criminal record.

Plenty hide it from their families.

Ask your DP, ex and her sibling.

Someone must have a pending charge against them. The outcome isn't known yet. This is why we reject people.
