Did Maxine Carr know?

I assumed she did. I know it's not based on fact but after watching the Maxine programme I thought maybe she didn't know. The "no comment" at the very end made me think.

Also has he admitted what he did?

The last I read was the accidental drowning story.

At the time a former neighbour told police that he made her clean the house from top to bottom every day before work. I always thought she was living as an abused woman, and when he told her what to say, she said it. I remember the Sun doing 2 headline articles "The most hated woman in Britain" and "Domestic violence victims" in the same edition and no one could see the connection. I've not seen the docudrama, but I always thought she didn't know.

Hellocatshome · 03/11/2022 23:26

A lot of people think she knew because of the cleaning and bleaching of the house. I know a few woman in abusive relationships and more than one of them obsessively cleans the house including what I consider using an excessive amount of bleach on a daily basis. I have no idea if she knew.

SheerFolly · 03/11/2022 23:55

I remember the news clip where she spoke in the past tense. The irregularities in their story (where he had been/where she had been/their arguement and phone call) were another key feature.

KurriKawari · 03/11/2022 23:57

Did she give him a fake alibi or have I confused that?

Yes she did, if the drama is to be believed he told her he was worried about being falsely accused so she gave him a false alibi.

I'm sorry - what documentary is being discussed here?

It was a drama not a documentary on Channel 5 a month or so ago called Maxine.

mackthepony · 04/11/2022 00:28

Thanks, hellocatshome

GrimDamnFanjo · 04/11/2022 00:55

I don't think she did.
I think he was abusive and that she isn't very bright.
He told her he'd be accused as he saw them last and she believed him.

Donttalkimcounting · 04/11/2022 01:56

We had the same dilemma after we watched it.

I also had a really hard time, after watching so much of them in the house, with them not covering the conversation where he'd told her the children had been in the house. Maxine only admits to that when she was going through the court process. Why didn't they do a drama re-enactment of that?

I guess the point of the drama was to show how we'll probably never know.

I think, personally, that he never told her what he'd done. I think he denied it and I think deep down she knew but she also didn't believe it, if that makes sense?

I had an ex who used to do drugs. I had absolutely no idea. There had been some weird behaviour, but every explanation he gave for it, i believed. One night he was 'in the shower' and he was taking ages. I started knocking on the door. He came out, dry hair, dry feet - and I said I thought you were in the shower and he said, I was. He walked past me and drug paraphernalia fell on the floor, from underneath the towel he had wrapped round him. I said, is this for drugs? And he said, 'no. well yeah I confiscated it from a lad at work.'

I remember being confused and thinking it was strange but, ultimately, 24yrs old me believed every word that came out of his mouth - despite everything in that situation being glaringly obvious it was bullshit. It was obvious he hadn't been in the shower and he literally had drugs falling out from under his towel. But still he told me it wasn't so and I believed him. I was just incredibly gullible and naive and also I couldn't square my lovely boyfriend as being someone who snuck into the bathroom to take class A drugs. So what he said had to be true.

So that's kinda how I think it was for Maxine. The stakes, of course, were so much higher and so much worse but I think that probably made it easier for her to believe him - the crime was so horrific that in her mind he couldnt possibly have done it. When you're in love with someone - it's hard to see that person as also a person who kills innocent little children. Even if, it's glaringly obvious to everyone else.

I think she did know. I was off work recovering from an op when it happened, and was watching the news all the time. I saw her on the news interviews and thought immediately that she knew something. I haven’t changed my opinion.

i do feel intensely sorry for the families having this brought up again.

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 04/11/2022 03:01

I honestly think she is just thick as a slice of bread.
According to the drama, H told her that the police were trying to frame him because he was the last person to see them. She believed him and tried to stop any questioning in it’s tracks by giving him an alibi.

The ‘No comment’ at the end… She was being questioned by the press after being given a new identity- I assumed that just meant she no longer answered questions about her ‘former life’.

KangarooKenny · 04/11/2022 06:51

I’m fairly sure she was interviewed before their bodies had been found, and she spoke of them in the past tense. So she knew.

SnitterBug · 04/11/2022 07:07

I don't think she knew he had killed them . I think she thought they would accuse him because of his past and her perfect life and plans they had made would come tumbling down . She went into denial. You only have to hear her reaction when given proof he had done it confirms that . She wasn't bad just very nieave

I havn't seen the drama, but I remember this interview, and commented to dh about her use of the past tense at the time. I think she did.

I've just watched because of this thread.

They showed that, but there was a debate about her no longer being a TA and the question being asked in the past tense.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/11/2022 07:18

Wasn't there the car boot photo? I was shocked when she wasn't punished more severely - I always thought she knew at the time

Do you watch Faking It, where body language and linguistics experts analyse the videos taken by press or police when investigating crimes? They have an episode about Huntley, and I can't remember if they focus much on Carr, but it is an interesting watch. Might be able to get it online, I watched it on Discovery+

Me too, it is fascinating!
Some really sad episodes though, they can be tough to watch.

Why wouldn't she have contact with her children? I wasn't aware there was more than one, but they were born after she was released from prison, surely?

PAFMO · 04/11/2022 07:40

And the person you know who knows MC under her new identity- is that person allowed to talk to you about her?
