If your character will be socialising with his colleagues then you want him to do something you know more than a little about for reality ? If you’re going to open a window on his work. Or something where you can find out or have friends who you can run things past etc.
Does she work with him or in same field?
Or is it largely incidental to the action?

Oh I forgot you could make him a financial director of a company like a supermarket or bakery chain then have him arrested for embezzlement, or lose his job and get struck of by his professional body by just not touching out with his oyster card.

Nice but dim estate agent for Savilles.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/07/2019 22:56

Property - manages the family portfolio. Needs to stay in the city as he has so many meetings with property development and managers

TalkinAboutManetManet · 01/07/2019 23:00

Diamond broker.

rosewool · 01/07/2019 23:02

I like the idea of him being an arts or antiques dealer.
Traditional but still has the potential to be glam and leisurely.

Or maybe a journalist?

Look at all the auctioneers that are on TV....
Famous and old firms.

HR Director in a head office of a FTSE 100. Could be in other parts of the country but would need to be in London part time.

DesMartinsPetCat · 01/07/2019 23:25

He could be the Sales Director for a pots and pans company. It’s surpriaingly lucrative. Good travel perks too.

IT consultant

Or maybe a journalist?

If he is a journalist living in London, he is nowhere near rich. Unless he’s a Boris/Rod Liddell level or tabloid big name columnist, or possibly overall Editor.

Not as lucrative as most people think.

Threesoups · 02/07/2019 00:30

Restaurant critic for a broadsheet. Has his own foodie blog on the side. Very part time, kind of a Louche lifestyle.

Zilla1 · 02/07/2019 09:56

Perhaps it might be helpful to align the career with the character's background - if he went to private school and Oxbridge and is in 30s-50s then investment banker/partner in magic circle law firm/boutique consultancy. If younger then fintech start up.

If old money but not academic then art dealer or Lloyds of London using connections.

If self-made then entrepreneur.

Do you need your character to travel a lot, work late at the office or be at home?

Roomette · 02/07/2019 10:17

Some of these suggestions are funny and suggest some people have very odd ideas about what constitutes a 'lucrative' London career.

CakeRage · 02/07/2019 11:12

The richest person I know owns his own marketing agency. Insane amounts of money. He has a room in his house just for his piano.

Loopytiles · 02/07/2019 11:24

Can’t imagine very many journos or art dealers are well paid.
