16yo wedding present as plus one

This is a request about an Irish wedding in Ireland, so UK wedding principles do not apply!

16yo DD is going as her bff's plus one to bff's sister's wedding. They will be the only under 18s attending (so DD is invited specifically for the bff, no cousins, etc there for company, if that's relevant at all). What wedding present should I give her to give them? €100 in a card ok? Or should I go a bit higher?

Personally I wouldn’t expect a 16 year old to give any money especially if they’re invited as company to a lone teenager

OchonAgusOchonOh · 28/03/2026 20:56

I think as she is simply keeping her friend company, no present would be expected. That said, turning up one arm as long as the other isn’t the done thing. Could you buy something for around €30-40 instead? Maybe an expensive candle or something like that if she knows the sister likes them? Maybe have her ask the friend what type of smelly stuff for the house the sister likes.

I think £100 is very generous. I wouldn't expect a 16 year old to give a gift. I'm sure the bride and groom will be delighted.

DurtBurd · 28/03/2026 21:17

Oh interesting, thanks, good to get other opinions. The last wedding I was at was when DD was a baby and we were in the height of our friend group weddings and the madness therein. I know the mum a bit but I think she'd be mortified if I asked about a present. An actual gift (how rare these days!) is a nice idea. The wedding couple moved into a new house late last year so I'll ask dd to ask bff about things they like. Maybe an Avoca blanket or similar?

An avoca blanket would be mad expensive. Definitely more than the €100. You could see is there anything nice in TKMaxx if you have one nearby?

I think though something like throw is a bit iffy as it's personal taste and depends on decor. Better to get something more consumable. Or maybe something for the garden like garden crockery (or whatever the equivalent word for the plastic stuff is).

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2026 21:23

No, no, no give them something they don’t want like a clock that they have to display in case you pop in Grin

Jesus, you're right, the price of them! 😬

DD can earn her keep and ask bff...I've done the hard slog finding her shoes that won't cripple her for the day.

How about something like a Newbridge silverware photo frame? Easons often have them on sale, a frame and Newbridge candle would be about fifty euro in total.

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2026 21:29

Seriously though your daughter is doing them a favour so a little token like the candle suggested is absolutely fine (as long as it’s not vanilla 🤢)

God yeah. A vanilla scented candle would be grounds for a mafia style vendetta.

There's a lovely Newbridge Christmas decoration that can be personalised for €25. Its a great token gift and something the couple will use.

And if they hate it, it only comes out once a year😁

DurtBurd · 28/03/2026 21:55

Dear god, vanilla anything other than ice-cream is an actual war crime. 😢

But would it not be weird to give a Christmas decoration in June??

Teenagers are supposed to be weird

I think 50 in a card would be fine from a 16 year old who is there for company for a BFF.

I need to know what the “one arm..’ quote means please and also to say that I read this entire post in an Irish accent in my head 😁

AppropriateAdult · 28/03/2026 23:38

Definitely a small-but-nice housey type gift rather than cash - I’d be mortified getting a cash gift from a child who I’d invited to keep my little sister company! Nice kitchenware is always a fairly safe bet, or a photo frame or something like that.

If you’re holding a gift in one hand then that arm is longer than the other whereas if you arrive empty handed then both arms are the same length.

Which Irish accent were you reading it in?

TheEarlofButties · 28/03/2026 23:56

In my head you’re Aisling Bea
