Help! Which English teas are drinkable?

BaronessBomburst · 19/01/2025 18:17

We live in the Netherlands and the tea here is revolting. We bought several boxes of Lyon's back from our last trip but have already drunk the lot.
DH will be going to England next month.
Which tea should he buy?
I was thinking maybe Yorkshire tea?
Hit me with your suggestions!
Thank you.

I’ve been told that Yorkshire tea is Barry’s tea in a different box, which I could well believe! I drink Yorkshire tea and it’s good

ToBeOrNotToBee · 19/01/2025 18:19

Clipper tea. Twinings everyday.
I'm in England, and I buy Barry's from my local tesco.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/01/2025 18:19

PG Tips is always a safe choice. Not a fan of Yorkshire Tea (Lancashire Tea is much nicer but also much harder to find).

trakehner · 19/01/2025 18:20

I would say Yorkshire or Sainsbury's do their own brand "extra strong" tea which is my personal favourite

TheLongRider · 19/01/2025 18:21

There's no hope for you, Barry's all the way!

Yorkshire tea is a good shout. I'm partial to Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Assam and the Ceylon is my favourite afternoon tea. You can get Irish products in some UK supermarkets.

I will say that tea is blended to suit local water hardness/softness. London teas never taste right in Dublin.

IhateMondaymornings · 19/01/2025 18:21

Twinings English Breakfast is nice and smooth, strong but not too strong.

Tcsha · 19/01/2025 18:21

I hate PG tips. Assam tea is good, Yorkshire is ok. Twinings have a good selection. Depends of the sort of black tea you like.

SusanSHelit · 19/01/2025 18:22

You can Barry's in the UK (but not Barry's gold, at least I've never seen it). I get it in asda or tesco.

Otherwise Yorkshire tea is OK. Tetley is vile. Twinings is ok but extortionatly priced

Big box of Yorkshire! To be honest - it's not that bad in NL, but you just need to find a proper English Breakfast tea. Tell him to bring back some Giant Chocolate Buttons whilst he's at it!

Apparently there's an Irish shop online in the Netherlands.

Lyons Original Tea Bags 40s

Box of 40 tea bags.

It’s more where you buy from than the tea itself. I recommend all tea sold by Steenbergs, but that’s online, though you can buy in large quantities. It does rather depend on your taste and pocket so it’s difficult to recommend. I love tea and have several different sorts.

LassoOfTruth · 19/01/2025 18:24

Marks and Spencer gold is good, and Twinings actually do a “strong Irish blend” if you can find it. I saw Nambarrie in Sainsbury’s once but I’ve not seen Barry’s. Yorkshire tea is decent as well

Em308 · 19/01/2025 18:51

Ringtons tea, delivered to my door by the lovely Ringtons tea man💓

bellocchild · 19/01/2025 18:53

Sainsbury's Gold for us.

Sakura7 · 19/01/2025 18:56

I've found Lyons fairly weak lately, apparently it's just rebranded PG Tips these days.

I'd go for Barry's (if he can find it) or Yorkshire tea. Also the Tesco gold blend (in a red box) is surprisingly good!

lovinglaughingliving · 19/01/2025 19:14

Twinnings 1886 is the only tea I drink.

OzCalling · 19/01/2025 19:20

As a Barry’s fan I can confirm that Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Ceylon is gorgeous!

rightoguvnor · 19/01/2025 19:53

Yorkshire will be fine for drinking with milk in.
But if you prefer lemon or drink it black then Twinings or Whittards is much better.
Lady Grey or Assam is very nice.
If you like a herbal tea, then Twinings Detox is blimming delicious. For Xmas I received a presentation box of all the different Twinings herbal teas and it's become the highlight of my day to choose a new one.

I can get Clipper! 😊 We drink the organic Earl Grey mostly but after so many years of it being the only decent tea I'm bored of it now.

I was going to order from them but their postage costs are ridiculous. 😡

DH is not good in a supermarket strategic incompetence but fortunately DS will be going too.
I'm most looking forward to Bird's instant custard. The packets where you just add boiling water.

I like Yorkshire gold, also Twinings English breakfast. Waitrose do a good own brand Assam actually.

PG Tips is horrible imho. Although the worst, weakest tea, is the Lipton black tea all abroad (Spain).

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 19/01/2025 22:48

Yorkshire Tea or M&S Extra Strong Tea for the builders tea experience

Ringtons tea, delivered to my door by the lovely Ringtons tea man💓

Does he still have an old fashioned green and gold van? My mum used to buy from the Rington's tea man but they don't deliver where I live now.
