Help! Which English teas are drinkable?

BaronessBomburst · 19/01/2025 18:17

We live in the Netherlands and the tea here is revolting. We bought several boxes of Lyon's back from our last trip but have already drunk the lot.
DH will be going to England next month.
Which tea should he buy?
I was thinking maybe Yorkshire tea?
Hit me with your suggestions!
Thank you.

Booths Builder's Tea. My absolute favourite.

Mumof1andacat · 19/01/2025 23:28

Yorkshire tea, pg tips or miles tea

Sgtmajormummy · 19/01/2025 23:32

I’m in Europe and I get PG Tips from my local Indian supermarket, 300 teabags at a time.
You can get smaller, too!

M&S extra strong tea is gorgeous or their gold tea is also excellent

Giggorata · 20/01/2025 01:09

Couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Dutch attempts at tea!
Dutch DIL was converted to decent tea when living in the UK, so when I visit, there's a huge bag of Yorkshire tea, plus a few Twinings varieties in my suitcase. In fact, I’ve bought a larger suitcase to fit them all in.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2025 01:54

I drink Tetley - shoot me...

Ellepff · 20/01/2025 02:27

When I’m somewhere without good tea I go to an Indian supermarket. Tata Gold or Brooke Bond Red Label are my favourite

Helplessandheartbroke · 20/01/2025 02:36

Tetleys for me!

ClimbingMounjaro · 20/01/2025 02:45

You can buy Barry's on eBay! Also soda farls, wheaten, potato farls etc. I sometimes do a bread order as can't get any of those in my local stores in England

sashh · 20/01/2025 04:16

Just a thought, and I know it is the wrong time of year but you can get tea advent calendars, it might be with trying one to test a variety.

Caspianberg · 20/01/2025 04:46

I’m in mainland Europe. We like twinnings usually but since brexit it’s extortionate postage from the uk, and pricey in shop in small 25 bag boxes.

We have been buying Ahmad tea brand from Amazon.de now. It’s the closest to twinnings we have found and good value, and free postage. They do English breakfast, Earl grey, Darjeeling and assam, as well as others I think that we haven’t tried.

Another vote for Clipper, either the ordinary one or the organic one.

StamppotAndGravy · 20/01/2025 08:09

Do you have a Kelly's expat store near you in NL? They're in most of the big cities now there are enough of us. They sell real Twinings in the black boxes, Yorkshire, PG, Tetleys and I think Barry's. Its more expensive than suitcase importing, but not by that much when you factor in the faff.

StamppotAndGravy · 20/01/2025 08:10

Actually, I'm going in this morning because we're out of Yorkshire. I'll check for you!

Sgtmajormummy · 20/01/2025 08:47

You can get Clipper teas in Lidl Europe occasionally. But I think there must be a trademark problem. How closely can you make a CU look like a CLI??

I can confirm, Kelly's sell Barry's master, gold and decaf. They have Cadbury's cream eggs too at the moment! Don't bother importing Clipper, AH sell it

MarieDeGournay · 20/01/2025 11:15

Tea! One of my obsessions! 😃
There has always been a taste for stronger tea in Ireland than in England, traditionally we drank it very strong with full-cream milk in, which balanced the strength of the tea. That's still the way I like it, plus sugar - I'm a real throwback!

That's why English teas taste wishy-washy to us, and the versions that are blended for the Continental market are even worse.😱

And a PP is right about blends being different according to the hardness of the water in the target market.

Yorkshire Tea, Tesco Finest were my fave tea-bags when in England. Good quality Assam tea-bags are expensive but give that strong licorice-ish depth.

Now stir the fire, and close the shutters fast,
Let fall the curtains, wheel the sofa round,
And, while the bubbling and loud hissing urn
Throws up a steamy column, and the cups,
That cheer but not inebriate, wait on each,
So let us welcome peaceful evening in.Smile

We buy Clipper in Jumbo, and recently picked up some in Lidl. Now I need to double check the box! 😂
Re Kelly's - we live in the arse end of nowhere and the nearest big town is in Germany. That said, we're planning a trip to Den Haag.

M&S Gold and Tesco Finest English Breakfast are the best two I've found.

DH is not good in a supermarket strategic incompetence but fortunately DS will be going too.
I'm most looking forward to Bird's instant custard. The packets where you just add boiling water.

I'm back in London mid-March. Send me a DM if your DH forgets any essentials and I can post it to you when back in NL.

Neighbours87 · 20/01/2025 13:34

Twinnings English breakfast but it’s pricy

BitOutOfPractice · 20/01/2025 13:37

I hear you about terrible Dutch tea. I once caught a Dutch friend making tea in a glass, just using hot water from the tap. I was appalled!

M&S gold are good imho. And Yorkshire.

thismotherhoodthing · 20/01/2025 15:50

Rington's tea is the most superior of all

Yorkshire Gold a close second

Finally in third place, M&S English breakfast.

If none of the above are available I would buy Twinings English Breakfast .

I don't go near Tetleys, PG tips or Typhoo if I can help it

Thank you, that's very kind. We should be okay though as DS loves a supermarket shop and is pretty reliable.
