Craicnet

The partition of craicnet

I was bemused by this and have been digesting the reply I received from mumsnet hq for a few months. I politely suggested there could be different sections in Craicnet for NI and ROI. Not for any nefarious reasons, just because obviously they are two different places and someone starting a thread about moving to NI isn't looking for loads of responses from ROI people going 'well, I don't know about NI, but in ROI...'
For clarity, I am Irish in the Republic of Ireland. I received one of the coldest and snippiest replies that I've ever received. They told me they are not going to 'partition' Craicnet. I'm not upset but I am slightly taken aback and amused. Partition already happened 100 years ago and I was not personally responsible. Did I make a dreadful faux pas? Confused.

Well. I think we should start pro- and anti-Treaty factions immediately.

MILLYmo0se · 26/06/2024 19:56

That was a very interesting turn of phrase to use!

Very funny😁
Was it Brendan Behan who said that the first item on the agenda of any Irish group was The Split?

I think we manage to work out whether things are about Ireland or N Ireland or both, OP, and there are lots of common areas of interest. Posters sometimes put 'NI' in the thread title, if it is specific.

Something that I found a bit disconcerting was when someone brought up the issue of how hard it is to find watercress in Ireland [we don't shy away from the
difficult topics here on Craicnet😉] and some of the replies suggested places in England. Like they didn't realise that their local Sainsbury's wasn't much use to someone in Ireland.
They didn't get any snippy comments about it - I was tempted, but I reckoned their hearts were probably in the right place, even if their watercress wasn't.🌱

pontipinemum · 26/06/2024 21:58

@MarieDeGournay to be fair I think sometimes it comes up in peoples feeds and they don't notice it's in craicnet. Altho I have put into a few threads I am in Ireland and still get very England centric responses

No need for separate forums I don't think anyway

Crokepark · 26/06/2024 21:58

😂 what makes me smile is that politically, I'm definitely not averse to a United Ireland but it seems like we can only have one right now on mumsnet 😝

I mean, they're different countries. So why wouldn't/shouldnt craicnet only pertain to ROI?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/06/2024 22:04

I think it was light-hearted!

Before Craicnet was setup it was posters from both sides of the border requesting it!
No need whatsoever to separate it imo

Thetroutofnocraic1 · 29/06/2024 18:41

They are different countries for sure I agree. However I don’t think there is a need to partition craicnet. There are shared interests and commonalities between NI and the republic. When you read a thread it is always clear if the person is discussing NI or the Republic so I don’t see the big deal? I’m from the republic but live in a border county so I am in NI frequently. Who cares ?

ArdMhaca · 29/06/2024 18:44

We need a border poll

Thetroutofnocraic1 · 29/06/2024 18:49

And to be fair mumsnet is a UK website. Not an Irish one. Rollercoaster is probably the Irish equivalent but I don’t think it is as good because we simply don’t have the population to get the same level of interaction. So I’m not going to complain about NI people using craicnet!

Abhannmor · 30/06/2024 17:46

Well I'm intrigued about the subtle differences so I like hearing from ppl in De Nort.

Next up - Rangers and Celtic versions of Scotnet. ( runs away...)

stayathomer · 30/06/2024 17:50

It was a completely sensical (is this a word?!’) question- ni schools, healthcare and money are all so different to roi

Swiftea · 30/06/2024 17:57

As an Irish passport holder from NI, it can be upsetting to be told that you are not from Ireland because where you live is part of the U.K.

However, just under 100 years ago, all of Ireland was part of the U.K. Were the people then not from Ireland? Would you tell someone from Scotland, they are not Scottish, but just British?

Abhannmor · 30/06/2024 18:03

We can handle it tho. Sterling was legal tender here til the late 70s. Anyway the world has changed since partition - and shrunk. Sometimes its nice to get both perspectives. Eg could I live in Cavan and work in Enniskillen. Or vice versa .

deeahgwitch · 30/06/2024 18:37

As someone who was there at the start of Craicnet ( I've had various name changes along the way ) I don't want partition.
I know lots of things are different because of the different jurisdictions but I too find it interesting to get a Northern perspective on things.
Also great information on places to stay/visit in the North.
I'd never have heard of the famous Ulster tray-bakes or Fifteens if Craicnet was partitioned.

When I drive up and cross the Border I always think how we were all part of the one country circa 100 years ago and yet how the treaty then made us "othered" to each other.

Apileofballyhoo · 30/06/2024 18:42

Othered is a good way of putting it, witch.

No, I like hearing the differences and similarities between us and our nordie counterparts.

I tell English people they are just from Southern Scotland.

I second that.

Limesodaagain · 23/11/2024 15:52

I would have thought the thread title can make it clear enough if the topic is specific to a particular region..
