Young woman killed by dog in Limerick

So sad to see the news this morning about the young woman killed by a dog this morning in Limerick, suspected to be an XL Bully. RIP.

Does anyone know if XL bullies are being imported here en masse since the UK ban, and also what the exact law around them in Ireland is? I have noticed 4 in my area in Dublin in the last couple of months, previously never having seen one. None of them were muzzled. In one case someone actually came into our local playground with one!

Bringing one into a playground wow!!

A girl in my street has one it's awful, they took a parcel in for me once and I saw it though the window when I went to collect and it and turned on my heels and went home, to hell with the parcel 😂😂

but I saw her the other day coming home with the dog loose in the back of her car unmuzzled with her 1 year old daughter in her car seat 🤯🤯🤯 wtf?!

Gemmahearts94 · 05/06/2024 12:22

I hadn't seen anything about the girl in limerick it's so sad, it's scary that because of the ban here the numbers are rising in other places, it needs to be a ban everywhere

OrionNebula · 05/06/2024 12:27

That's horrendous! Really hope we aren't reading about them on the news soon too.

We are in the north and I’ve certainly noticed a massive uptick in XL bullies. I’m seeing far more on the streets, mostly in areas where that sort of breed would be a status symbol🤦‍♀️ People imported them from England en masse in order to ‘rescue’ them, except now all of the rescues are packed full to the brim with horrible bully breeds that they can’t get rid of.

Fadedbouquet · 05/06/2024 12:56

That poor, poor young woman. RIP.

I live just outside a town and often see people from a local large housing estate walking large restricted breeds like German Shepherds or Rottweilers and possible bully breeds past my house. Always unmuzzled and almost always off-lead which breaks the law basically.

Is there anywhere you can report this illegal dog-walking and will anything at all be done if you do?

It's got to the stage I'm nervous to walk down the road and nervous when the kids go out.

OrionNebula · 05/06/2024 13:00

The bullies I have seen have been on leads but not muzzled and in the care of people who didn't look like they would have a hope of controlling them if they decided to go for someone. One was with a teenage boy.

I am not sure if there is anyone these things can be reported to. I suspect not.

Hadn't' seen the story but so awful.

I was reading up on the issue with descendents of Killer Kimbo (was inbred for strength and size beyond healthy parameters and the genetic result is some kind of gene that can result in provoked aggression) apparently 50% of xl bullies in the UK are descendants? Terrifying.

boobyandthebeast · 05/06/2024 13:12

unprovoked aggression that should have said

Juneisgreen · 05/06/2024 13:25

Very sad for her.
The cases above should be reported to the local dog warden.

What country are you in where there are legal restrictions on GS's to be muzzled?

Fadedbouquet · 05/06/2024 19:52

Ireland????

Edited to say sorry if I seem confused, this is Craicnet.

Fadedbouquet · 05/06/2024 19:56

Where are you @YNK ?

And yes, GS, Dobermanns and some other breeds need to be muzzled in public places. Though, as ever, it’s hard to enforce.

Fadedbouquet · 05/06/2024 20:02

Yes, GS need to be muzzled in public here.

I believe there are exceptions made for service dogs, eg for the blind, or dogs used by the guards or in rescue ops etc.

Aye... what could possibly go wrong.
That's nuts putting your child in that situation.

miri1985 · 05/06/2024 22:25

Ireland, so many laws so little enforcement

I feel sorry for the dog wardens they are asked to do an incredibly difficult job and there don't seem to be anywhere near enough of them to take on the workload.

There obviously needs to be a real discussion about bully breeds etc but everyone in politics seems to be blissfully ignoring what happened in the UK and will happen here. I couldn't believe that there wasn't any legislation brought forward after that child was mauled last year and I suspect there won't be any after this woman in Limerick died either, especially not as she was killed by her own dog so people will blame her for her own death.

I wish Ireland was more serious about animal welfare, there are so many cases you read about in the paper where hideous abuse of animals has gone on and the most people get is a fine. Ireland is known for puppy mills because there is such lax enforcement and pathetic punishment

No human can physically stop these animals once they go, you need a gun, perhaps even a few guns.
It's very sad but I'm relieved it wasn't a stranger or child that died.

There's no real excuse to keep these as pets anymore, we've all read the horrible stories.

Fadedbouquet · 05/06/2024 22:40

Can eveyone start writing to their politicians please? Make them take notice.

Notaflippinclue · 06/06/2024 00:24

Why haven't the Irish banned them

BreadInCaptivity · 06/06/2024 01:13

Not in Ireland but am in contact with a former work colleague (now friend) who lives in Dublin and she coincidentally mentioned a few weeks ago about seeing more of these XL dogs around and asked what the situation was locally to me in England.

I honestly had seen very few of these dogs prior to the ban and none since.

I assumed they had been probably PTS or sent to rescue but it had not occurred they may have been shipped (presumably at "discount" prices) post ban (they used to sell for £££) elsewhere.

It's awful what has happened to this young woman. Friend and I WhatsApp'd about it and both felt we cannot fathom why anyone would want such a dog unless they are ignorant of its unpredictable temperament and power or actually revel in owning such a dangerous animal - in either case they are not appropriate/responsible owners.

Re: the mother with the dog at school/in the car unmuzzled/unrestrained wtf? 🤬 That's a report that needs to be made to social services.

honeyrider · 06/06/2024 01:47

Awful what happened in Limerick and on her 23rd birthday. Similar case in Waterford City a few months ago but the victim lived.

OrionNebula · 06/06/2024 07:01

@miri1985 absolutely! I very, very rarely see dogs with muzzles. You are also technically meant to have a license to own any dog but there is absolutely zero enforcement of that as far as I can see.

Abhannmor · 06/06/2024 08:57

I got a €40 fine because my dog licence had expired. My lovely collie / sheepdog cross Bella RIP , was a big softy. A neighbour couple have 2 very muscular pit bulls and to be fair they are always muzzled when out walking. But what's the point? Not much fun for the dogs or their owners.

I was sitting outside a pub once on a lovely day and some idiot had tied his Rottweiler to the leg of our table. Of course it made a mad rush at another dog and sent the drinks flying. After they had mercifully departed I asked another customer why people need to have such huge uncontrollable dogs . ' Penis envy' was his reply.

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2024 09:03

@Gemmahearts94 Could you report what you saw to the local Gardai ?
They might have a word.
As usual the politicians we will close the stable door after the horse has bolted, I heard Heather Humphreys on the radio saying she has "been working very hard on the issue of dog control.......I have set up a cross Governmental stakeholder group..... to examine this whole area....whether we should follow the example in Northern Ireland, in the UK and what I can clearly say is if they recommend to me that we should ban a particular breed, I'm happy to do that."

🙄should have been done already.

Law enforcement with regard to dogs is almost non existent.

OrionNebula · 06/06/2024 09:12

These stakeholder groups always take ages to report back and then the government takes an age to "consider the findings". Then if new legislation is needed that can take ages too... don't see a ban happening any time soon.
