So sad to see the news this morning about the young woman killed by a dog this morning in Limerick, suspected to be an XL Bully. RIP.

Does anyone know if XL bullies are being imported here en masse since the UK ban, and also what the exact law around them in Ireland is? I have noticed 4 in my area in Dublin in the last couple of months, previously never having seen one. None of them were muzzled. In one case someone actually came into our local playground with one!

This is horrific and such a sad story. I can’t stop thinking about this poor girl. No one should be keeping these dogs as pets.

loropianalover · 06/06/2024 13:06

The story is horrific. I cannot understand the thought process behind the man who filmed the CCTV footage and sent it to friends and family either.

RIP to the poor girl, a terribly scary way to die and an absolutely traumatising video no doubt.

I’m not a dog person in general so feel like my opinions are biased against them anyway, but why do people want these things as pets???? I don’t get it.

I think its a bit like the dog version of "I can change him" for some people. They seem to think their love and care will be exceptional and will overcome everything. There will be a lot of people who own XLs who read this womans story or about all the UK deaths and cuddle their own XL and think that will never happen to me

Other people want them because they're capable of violence.

Local facebook over the past few weeks blowing up because someone rose concern about a person walking one off the lead. The posts shouting them down was horrendous - about how the dog is gorgeous a great pet, their child hugs it etc - nothing could take this down if it went for you - it would have to be a very good powerful gun.

I personally adore GS - they were a huge part of my childhood we were always told to never trust a dog completely. We were raised to respect the animal for being an animal - while absolutely loving the bones of them.

May that poor young woman RIP.

A Dublin Live report on the incident said that "sadly one of the animals had to be shot". SADLY??? 🤯

Covering their arses because of the loud minority who will get up in arms over the dog being dead.

The comment may be fair, as ideally if an animal has to be destroyed you want to be using the typical (overdose of anaesthetic ? method). I imagine it isn't a vets first choice to use a gun or it may have been an armed Garda? Nor people who were near by.

Given the circumstances of course it is the right thing to do - it is absolutely horrific to think of the amount of attacks and deaths attributed to these creatures.

I've seen some comments this woman made about her dogs being her "babies" and saying (on TikTok) "I don't give a Fxxx if you don't like the look of him....and if you think the breed should be banned".
Just goes to show you can't tell some people, and unfortunately she paid with her life and a horrific death.

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2024 17:33

I saw that too @SofaSpuds.
She paid a high price - her life. Sad

News report on Radio Ulster this morning, chief exec of USPCA was interviewed and just banged on about breed specific legislation being crap (XL bullies in NI soon to be subject to more or less same rules as rest of UK). No specifics as to how she thought the problem should be dealt with, wouldn't acknowledge any genetic tendencies towards aggression or the physical ability to cause a lot of damage very quickly.
AFAIC re: XL breed specific legislation...BRING IT ON!! And add Cane Corso while you're at it. And Boerboels.

It seems like she was living on her own ? Very strange that someone saw it on cctv and forwarded it to the family.

I presumed it was her ex bf/bf that had access to the cameras through his phone? Not sure though.

Beautifulbythebay · 07/06/2024 12:01

Not sure how a ddog who's early interactions with humans are when 1 chops off it's ears is ever trusting of us enough to be well trained and 'predictable'.. Pic shown of the poor woman shows her ddog has been mutilated...

Helengreggregson · 07/06/2024 12:10

It seems to be common cutting ears off those dogs. I don’t know how anyone would live with 4 of those type of dogs. I wouldn’t even live with 1 of them to be honest and I love dogs.

I think he did. Perhaps she asked him to watch over the dogs on camera. I wouldn’t want a boyfriend or ex to have access to a camera in my house.

Another dog attack in Cork, pit bull this time. Dog had to be shot to stop the attack.
It doesn't say the dog bit its owner, but given it happened in her own back garden I can only assume it was.

Someone said that the lady in Limerick used to let the dogs roam around outside freely. It could have been a child out playing that could have been attacked. Shocking. Although I wonder if something had spooked the dogs before she came home for them to turn on her. Dogs are unpredictable creatures , you can never trust them 100% and I say that as an animal lover.

And yet I read in the Independent that locals were not afraid of the dogs as they were not known to roam, and one neighbour had never even seen the dogs. Goes to show it’s hard to trust anything that’s written!

Delighted to see the news of the ban today! I wonder will there be much pushback?

I heard some almost hysterical wan from an animal charity on Newstalk today and she was against it. A charity I'd avoid supporting after hearing her.
