I'd like to know what I'm missing out on, but now I'll never know!

Does watercress feature in an egg sandwich?

DeanElderberry · 15/05/2024 16:04

Egg and cress sandwiches may have -

watercress: the best thing -

tiny cress; okay -

nasturtium leaves and flowers; jolly good, rivalling watercress
or - - -

rocket! the only place rocket is tolerable, and then only after major bigging up the butter and / or mayonnaise.

It's all about balancing the smooth calmness of the eggs, the heat and moisture and slight crunch of the cress, and soft blandness of the bread.

Im sure marks did egg and watercress sandwiches. I blame brexit for all this.
Egg and little cress is a sort of polite afternoon tea thing. Or little cress is a garnish. Like a garnish of tayto. But politer.

I'm thinking of the M+S egg sandwich 👍
I did like that sandwich. Dearly beloved. It was tasty.

You have gone very poetic there. Way better than Nigella.

The only place I've seen dillisk is in health food shops. SuperValu used to sell Carrageen Moss a few years ago. Not sure if they still do.

Someone did say I might get dillisk in Supervalu...
I said thanks, but my thought bubble went, Man...Shopping...What do they know? And had a little smile to myself.
So, mortified if wrong!

MarieDeGournay · 15/05/2024 18:28

Watercress is a semi-aquatic plant and needs lots of clean, clear running water... good luck finding THAT anywhere these days😡
A quick look at google has lots of 'how to grow' instructions, but maybe they are referring to the tiny mustard cress or whatever it's called, that you get in egg sangers.
If somebody manages to grow their own proper watercress, please come back and tell us about it.

eggandonion · 15/05/2024 19:32

Clean running water might indeed be the issue.

Just had a root around online and apparently Fallon and Byrne sell watercress. They also deliver nationwide.

Well wow😂 I actually think I would die dead, I know it sounds like a massive exaggeration, but my mouth waters at the thought of it, before I expire may need to eat my body weight in watercress

I have been living in Ireland for 22 years and I have never ever seen it in my supermarkets or any green grocer, and that has how long it's been since I had a watercress sandwich 😭😭😭

Hahaha! Now are you sure you can't get yourself over here this weekend for the Watercress Festival that was mentioned upthread (https://www.watercressfestival.org/)? There's a watercress eating competition and I reckon you could take down the local competition!! Failing that some form of watercress will no doubt be included on every 'locally sourced' menu from now till October.
