Water weeds as my nan called them - ' a great delicacy to the English '. Nice with egg and mayonnaise. Come to think of it you don't see much outside of an egg sandwich hereabouts.

TurqoiseJasper · 06/05/2024 10:15

I don't mean the small cress that you'd see in an egg sandwich, the actual big leaf watercress that looks a bit like spinach but a round leaf. I really really want some 😪

Dunnes allege they have a rocket (bleurgh), Spinach (bit bleurgh), and cress (looks like watercress, not the little stuff) salad...

Also Fallon and Byrne (should have guessed that one, it's right up their street) - and if you're not near Dublin, it looks like they'd post it to you!

Watercress - 100g

Lovely as a garnish for your salad or sandwich.

Tbh I can only imagine the state of it if you did manage to find it. Everything seems to be half rotten the day after it's bought 😡

Tenpintonpin · 06/05/2024 10:43

I live near massive watercress beds and they haven't started harvesting yet - give it another week or so and hopefully you'll be sorted!

KnickerlessParsons · 06/05/2024 11:11

Waitrose in Marlborough had about four different brands/types of watercress yesterday. Have you got a Waitrose?

TaTuirseOrm · 06/05/2024 11:15

There's no Waitrose in Ireland @KnickerlessParsons.

Can't help with your dilemma @TurquoiseJasper, but similarly I can't find fresh edamame beans anywhere these days.
Maybe they're out of season too.

Thank you😂 I have bought that before, and it's all spinach and three bits of watercress

You're right, watercress has the big leaf. I'm hoping the pic on the front are baby ones......

James Wong talks about growing watercress in a bowl outside, using pieces of shop bought watercress that's got roots on.

You're probably craving iron Op, tho you might just be an addict like me, cant get enough of the stuff!
Fortunately local Tesco and Sainsbury's regularly sell it and in the winter import it from Portugal.
I grew American land cress last year, very easy to grow and now is in flower/ going to seed, which I will collect and resow in late summer. Picture added.
Let us know how you get on with the packet of seeds.

Watercress
DeanElderberry · 07/05/2024 16:38

I wish someone would grow it commercially in Ireland. I know a few places, up in the hills where there are no cattle, and spring water clean enough to not have to worry about, where I can pick it. Ironic that the early Irish poetry is full of references to it. Best thing in an egg sandwich, and makes a beautiful soup.

DeanElderberry · 07/05/2024 19:58

In sandwiches, the second best thing is nasturtium (so called because they taste like watercress) leaves or flowers. Too early in the year for them just yet, but put seeds in now - they grow fast.

Throughthebluebells · 07/05/2024 20:09

I get watercress from Ocado but they don't sell the small cress in punnets so I have to go to Tesco for that. I love both varieties.

Unfortunately there's a lot that Tesco sells in the UK that it doesn't sell in Ireland ☹️
Rose Harissa Paste being one thing I've been looking for recently.
Fingers crossed @TurquoiseJasper that your horticultural ability delivers plenty of watercress 🤞

eggandonion · 07/05/2024 20:53

Im in Cork. I used to get it in Marks but haven't seen it recently. I use Princess Dianas soup recipe...
I can't find little cress anywhere. I like it too.
I want a Waitrose.

I'm an addict for sure..... Well I would be if I could bloody well get hold of some!
I honestly don't hold out much hope for those seeds, might have to do a day trip to Belfast and see if I can get hold of some.
Or even a quick Ryanair trip to Manchester with an empty suitcase 😂

Evergreen sell the rose harissa paste.

DeanElderberry · 08/05/2024 06:38

I'm tempted to try some of these - also hope that the fact that the seeds are available means someone in Ireland must be growing it.

You need to get down to Alresford 19 May for the watercress festival. Plenty there to satisfy your craving.

That looks amazing 😀
