I have a lot of weight to lose, and reading all the mounjaro/wegovy etc threads on here - can I get one of these prescribed here in Ireland? My BMI is 38.

How would i do it? With regular GP? Online dr?

Are you in Ireland @Kiehls101 ?

I looked at that website and it seems you need to live in the UK.

I'm in Ireland and had it prescribed first by my GP and then my endocrinologist. Try that route, if you have other issues around weight loss, there's a company called beyond bmi who have a full range of doctors/dieticans/nutritionists etc that you can sign up with who will monitor your weight loss and prescribe accordingly. Ozempic Insights on Instagram has a discount code for them.

thanks! What are the criteria to have it prescribed? High enough BMI? What drug did your GP offer you? And why did you switch to an endocrinologist?

Will look into Beyong BMI, they keep popping up on SM but not really sure what they offer.

if you have other issues around weight loss,

Other issues? Not sure what you mean. I want to lose weight but I am not very good at it, especially since peri menopause hit.

I've hormonal issues, hadn't a period in almost 11 years that's why I went to endocrinologist. And she brought them back!

First I went on metformin as it's cheaper but that gave me tummy issues so I was prescribed ozempic, now I take both side by side.

Ozempic is definitely only a tool you need to be following a good diet and exercise too.

What I mean by other issues is do you binge eat/emotional hunger/PCOS to name a few?

Criteria is you must be obese. I had been attending my doctor for years with continuous weight gain despite having a good diet and exercising.

Talk to your GP or do a consultation with Beyond BMI?

Thanks @Happierwithouthim. I saw my lovely GP today and she said she can give me ozempic or saxenda. But first she will do a full blood panel. If I meet certain criteria I can get the drugs covered (partially) under the drug payment scheme, if not I have to pay for them completely.

I’m on ozempic prescribed by my gp, I think it’s half the price of saxanda but saxanda is meant to be a bit better for weight loss. Ozempic can be tricky to get the higher dosages though so a lot of people do prefer saxanda for availability. I’m sure it probably depends on what part of the country you are in though, and the chemist you use. I know my local chemist had to give me a .5 pen even though I was only on .25 as they couldn’t get the .25 in and I’m expecting bother when I try get my 1mg pen now next week when my dose is increased!

wanttolose · 17/05/2024 10:22

I am in Dublin, not sure if it makes a difference. I guess I will see what the test results are before making a decision.

If ozempic is less available that would def skew me towards saxenda.

Hoping the cost of the drug will be offset by lower food bills lol.

Hi, just to update.

I am still waiting to be prescribed. First I did a blood test, waited for the results then my GP said I met 4 out of 5 criteria and if I did one further blood test I could get the drugs on HSE. So almost there!.

Reading this I see that I posted a month ago that I first saw my GP.

Really hoping there will be no supply issues.

OP posts:
wanttolose · 20/06/2024 21:33

I think I prefer saxenda from my research. If I get it covered by HSE there won't be a price difference, since I assume I just pay the €80 drugs limit per month.

I'm on ozempic it's not covered by DPS

Woodz · 25/06/2024 19:08

Hi all.. I am about to start Mounjaro in London and from what I can see it would be ideal for my mum who’s 74. Has anyone come across the website mounjaroireland.com. It’s based in listowel. Am thinking of buying it for mum but want to make sure it’s reputable. Of course I wil make sure she checks with the local doctor too. Also @wanttolose how did it go?

wanttolose · 28/06/2024 13:26

@woodz I finally got the go ahead from the HSE, they are covering saxenda for me. (well, I still have to pay €80 a month) Picking up prescription today and going to get tutorial from practice nurse next week on how to inject it.

Not sure why it would be better to through a website then for your mum to go to her GP and just her GP to prescribe it.

Woodz · 28/06/2024 13:55

@wanttolose i wasn’t sure if Mounjaro was prescribed in Ireland and it seems to be better than saxenda for weight loss. Hopefully your treatment works well though .. off to a great start!

Do you mind me asking how you got in on the Drugs Payment Scheme?

I was prescribed Ozempic by my endocrinologist last year but I had to stop taking it after a few months as it was impossible to find anywhere. I assume if I was diabetic I would have had more luck. I have PCOS and thyroid disease and had to pay full price so was interested to know, other than diabetes, how to get it on the Drugs Payment Scheme. If supply ever increases I would like to go back on it despite horrendous side effects.

My GP gave me a blood test, and then another one, and then based on those results she said I met all the criteria. (which is not really good news!)

How are you getting on OP? My current BMI is 30 and I'm considering going to GP for a prescription to cut out the "food noise". Possibly I don't meet all the criteria and may need to pay full price, if they agree to give me a prescription.

honeyrider · 15/07/2024 22:48

What are the five criteria you had to meet in you don't mind me asking wanttolose?

I had an endocrinologist staying with me for a couple of months until a week ago and he said they were seeing great results with ozempic.

Just started week 4 and I think I am just starting to lose weight, but very slowly. Stil not on full dose and I am not exercising much and wasn't being too careful about food. Now I have to be careful because I get horrible heartburn or constipation so trying to eat more veggies and less junk.

I don't know what the criteria were, sorry. I guess weight was one of them.

wanttolose hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread, just wondering how you are getting on? I went to doctor today and asked about it but she said they are not prescribing for just weight loss, not yet anyway, she didn't elaborate if that was just that practice or all. My bmi is about 35.5 and i am willing to pay for it so wasn't a cost issue.

Deadringer · 15/11/2024 21:13

Or if anyone else has any info it would be gratefully received.

ClockingOffers · 11/01/2025 16:29

@wanttolose how are you getting on with the drugs? Any problems?

I’ve had a major scare this week with excess blood in one of my eyes that may be due to my weight so I’m hoping my GP will agree to prescribing me something go help me lose the excess. BMI is somewhere between 35-40.

elizabethdraper · 11/01/2025 16:34
