Anyone inclined to give an opinion? I am leaning towards a yes/no vote, the yes to remove what I see as sexist language in the constitution, the no because the government are so appalling in terms of providing services and rights to disabled citizens and I feel the clause is paternalistic and pushes care on families yet again

I think most of the posters here are leaning towards a no no?
Apart from @VoteNONO who seems a bit undecided.

😂😂

🤣🤣

I'm voting No/No. I don't like the distinct lack of clarity (feels like on purpose) from the government.

The Ditch just published more stuff from advice from the Attorney General to ROG this time on durable relationships. They published it like 10 minutes ago in spite of the press blackout being in place since 2pm, wonder if they'll get in trouble?

I think online sources are exempt.

I have visions of parents waking their children on Saturday morning to break the news that they are not recognised in the Constitution.
What a load of nonsense.

I was listening to the Indo Daily podcast where they hosted a debate between Sarah Carey and Orla O'Connor Director of the NWCI. The way Orla O'Connor talked, apparently the consitution is constantly mentioned in schools, if this doesn't pass, children of single parents will be told on Monday in school how they aren't a family etc., will learn in school they aren't a family etc.

I don't think the Constitution was mentioned at all when I was in primary school and the only mention in secondary school was in the context of it being drafted in history class and even at that I don't think we went into any provisions.

I was dying to know what school this is that the constitution is being talked about so openly among children

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/03/2024 18:53

I don't know, but it's not the one my kids go to.

festivefavorites · 07/03/2024 18:57

I think I knew more about the Constitution of the USA, right to bear arms etc, than the Irish Constitution.
I really would find it hard to believe that any teacher would say that to a class. Especially when there is already legislation in place to protect those children.

Slanabhaile · 07/03/2024 19:01

Mine neither.

This scaremongering really gets my back up! Of course kids aren't going to walk into school in Monday to be told they're not part of a family.

DanielGault · 07/03/2024 19:04

My 12 y/o class have been given homework to put forward both sides of the argument. I think it's great tbh, get them thinking and engaged young.

I'm leaning towards Oh No No Wtf at this stage.

Can't recall many people saying Eilís a Dó was too old for the job. Mickey D's madra would do a better job than Leo I reckon. 🐶

@DanielGault I think this is fantastic. What's your child's take on it & where can you get child friendly information. My dc have lots of questions but they are a little younger than yours.

That is good, is it 6th class or 1st year secondary? Great to get them engaged as you said, pity its not a more clear cut referendum, I pity them having to explain the waffley durable relationships from both sides

Tbf we're both as confused as each other! We had a great chat but no conclusions were made. Really love the school initiative though yeah, brilliant.

Well Leo is very clear that it's not the State's responsibility to care for those needing care, he says it's the family's responsibility.

'The Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying is set to recommend that both assisted suicide and euthanasia be introduced in Ireland'

Rather puts Varadkar's comment in a new light. No wonder he was so chipper.

Again no wonder O Gorman wanted to keep this hidden from us great unwashed. Both bills could cost the taxpayers millions if not billions in litigation.

I want to know who leaked the unpublished documents to the Ditch. Definitely an inside job! Someone who wants the Yes campaign to fail perhaps?!

My elderly mother has just said the exact same thing @Genderwoo . You would think they would at least wait until Monday until they started at this. Yes Canada seems to be their beacon of all things "progressive"

LadyEloise1 · 07/03/2024 19:54

@Dublincailin wrote "...... MM has shown he will jump into bed with anyone to be in government."

Too true and I haven't forgotten that he has been a Minister since 1997 1997-2000 - for Education & Science
2000-2004 - for Health and Children
2004-2008 - for Enterprise Trade and
Employment
2008-2011 for Foreign Affairs
Serving under Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in that Godawful government that brought the IMF to Ireland's door because of the uncontrolled real estate bubble and the resulting collapse in the domestic financial system and Brian Cowen's government that followed.
Remember the Lisbon treaty ?
The Government didn't like the way we voted in June 2008 those pesky voters so we had to do it again in October 2009.

People have short memories 🙄

Or is it a distraction??? (It's dark down this rabbit hole)

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/03/2024 19:55

I read a horrible report about nursing homes in Canada assuming that residents were (it seemed like) on a conveyor belt towards assisted dying. It seemed like people had to clarify that they did not want this kind of help rather than specifying that they did.

Not a welcome development in my view.
