Anyone inclined to give an opinion? I am leaning towards a yes/no vote, the yes to remove what I see as sexist language in the constitution, the no because the government are so appalling in terms of providing services and rights to disabled citizens and I feel the clause is paternalistic and pushes care on families yet again

Well I don't agree with you there @DanielGault. Why would anyone vote to change the constitution to something that can only be interpreted by the courts?

VoteNONO · 06/03/2024 18:06

@JaneJeffer has an excellent point. As Barrister Maria Steen put it very eloquently last night "the constitution trumps legislation".

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2024 18:07

And I didn't say they shouldn't be voting but that they shouldn't be voting yes to something so open to interpretation but I notice you like to take part of what people post and disregard the parts that don't suit you.

If they don't agree with what's in the constitution.

The self same Maria Steen who was so eloquently anti Repeal?

VoteNONO · 06/03/2024 18:16

@DanielGault I am referring to her debate on Primetime last night about the upcoming referendum. She was measured, factual, eloquent & is obviously extremely well educated.

See, that's all well and good. So are the Burkes. But she doesn't give a shit about women's rights. So I personally wouldn't take a blind bit of notice of her, despite how educated and well spoken she is. I'm educated and well spoken too as it happens, it doesn't necessarily mean I know better than anyone else.

festivefavorites · 06/03/2024 18:27

On Six One news this evening they say that a turnout of less than 30% would be interpreted as a rejection. Did I get that right? I was multi-tasking as I listened 😂

3timeslucky · 06/03/2024 18:28

It is possible to disagree with the points she made during Repeal but agree with points she made last night.

I completely disagree with her views on abortion (and other issues also) but that doesn’t mean I have to disagree with her on everything.

I'd say it'd just have to be done again would it? They could hardly just assume an answer from a low turnout could they?

@DanielGault that's your opinion & that is mine. It's the beauty of living in a democracy. We can all exert our own critical thinking skills & draw our own conclusions.

Personally I delighted in seeing Barrister Maria making absolute mince of the old fashioned school teacher Martin. He was no match for her on any level & was very clearly out of his depth hence his personal misinformed attack on her at the end.

Michael accused her of being the doom & gloom of the divorce referendum despite her telling him it was before her time. She was still a child only 14 during the divorce referendum.
A perfect example of Michael Martin & our governments lies & spreading of misinformation right there on live TV!

I'd say so, that is particularly worrying. Although it's not as if that's not going on in reality anyway, care services are atrocious in this country. My DD is preparing a PowerPoint on the arguments for and against in the ref, I was just with her discussing them. Between myself, herself and my H, we were talking ourselves in circles. For a referendum, I am amazed how little discussion and information there has been. I'm hoping for a low enough turn out that they have to do it a second time, properly.

Hang on, why should it be run a second time? If people vote against it, why shouldn't their votes count?

If people don't bother turning out to vote, why would you disregard the ones that did? Talk about patronising...

They didn't clarify from what I heard. They only said that the Government have confirmed that they wouldn't rerun it during the lifetime of this Government.

I didn't see it but will take your word for it. Will watch it later if I can stomach her. She's no better than any other politician/ person they roll out in these campaigns. There's money behind her, and I'd wonder who/what organisation is behind her. And yes, it is the beauty of living in a democracy. We can all vote however we see fit.

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2024 18:44

Why aren't you going to vote @DanielGault ?

VoteNONO · 06/03/2024 18:45

https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/politics/arid-41335918.html

Sinn Féin are saying they will re run the referendums if they don't pass.

They have already been very vocal that they don't agree with the wording of both proposals.
In that case why don't they have the backbone to advocate for No if they don't agree with the strength of the wording. They are the opposition!!

Sinn Féin would rerun family and care referendum, Mary Lou McDonald says

Party president said Government's wording was an 'opportunity missed' and Sinn Féin in government would use the Citizens Assembly's suggested wording

Why aren't you going to vote @DanielGault ?

Can't walk. I barely made it from a taxi over a footpath to doctors waiting room last week. I usually always vote.

More gaffes again from Varadker today, he says other European counteries have "durable relationships" but O Gorman says "durable relationships" are not part of EU law.

More contradictions & misinformation. The Yes side are unwittingly doing serious damage to their campaign..
Hope it was worth the 23 million it cost to run.

Varadkar contradicts O'Gorman on “durable relationship” definition - Gript

What are we to make of this?

@VoteNONO Gript is a really really questionable source. I appreciate different viewpoints etc but I would be so suspicious of them.

VoteNONO · 06/03/2024 19:19

@DanielGault I think all the media sources have their own agendas. I like Gript, I appreciate it can be sensationalist at times but in my opinon they have got it spot on everytime with this current government.
I do read all the mainstream outlets too but they more often than not refuse to print anything with too much anti government sentiment. Like I said they all have their own agendas Gript included.
Personally I like their is opposition to the mainstream media as the majority of Irish media sources are identical.
