I thought I knew, but my American English teacher tells me I'm wrong, despite knowing I learnt it from my Irish dad. Need to know if I'm indeed wrong or gain the confidence to go and hit him with my turnip.

Thanks. I get the joke about Shaun the Sheep, but Shorn the Sheep would have a slight R in it. Grin

I'm going to try to find more about Savin.

@Abhannmor , I'm a visitor from Draignet.

I say Sow-in as others have said, but it does vary a bit by dialect so Sown is right too (the sow bit is like a female pig in both cases). You can hear it said in different dialects in this link.

Shorn has a definite R in it . Well spotted.

I've read this in many books and had no idea it was pronounced like these various pronunciations!

I mean, I knew it wasn't really pronounced as per English phonics but hadn't looked into it.

I don't think there are lots of different suggestions here, most are v v similar. And there's no K sound in oíche!

How To Say - Good Night in Irish Gaelic (VIDEO) (bitesize.irish)
I like her.

Abhannmor · 15/10/2023 15:37

Oíche is not exactly k sound....but slightly stronger than H ? Though I guess with urban Irish it could be rendered ' Ee-ha'.

Abhannmor · 15/10/2023 15:58

Well @CalonGaled I must defer to Siobhán as she seems to be a native speaker. Bitesize looks like a good site. Is there a nice simple Welsh one ?

Craicnet's been here a while.
I love the name

CalonGaled · 15/10/2023 18:02

She says Siobhán in a way that the similarity to the Welsh version is obvious.
The Welsh version is Siwan (SHOO-an, but more like SEW-ann - sew to rhyme with few - in the North)

No idea, sorry.
