How do you pronounce Samhain?

I thought I knew, but my American English teacher tells me I'm wrong, despite knowing I learnt it from my Irish dad. Need to know if I'm indeed wrong or gain the confidence to go and hit him with my turnip.

Kind of like Sah-wen but no idea if I’m right or not

Heard it pronounced Sam-hain on an audiobook which enraged me. How hard is it to check the pronunciation of unfamiliar words?!

My teacher said it's pronounced 'sown' which is kind of similar to 'sow-in'. I thought it was 'sar-win'. So we may both be kind of right.

I saw a video game once where the evil demon or whatever was called Sam Hayn. I kid you not.

Ps there's no R sound. We only say R when it's written. Well most of us !

I'd say Sow-ain (sow as in a female pig). Happy to be corrected though.

Why are people who aren't Irish and don't speak any Irish telling the poster, who has posted on Craicnet for a reason, how they would pronounce Samhain?

OP, here are examples of three different regional pronunciations of Samhain from the best online dictionary source -- you'll notice the only real difference is to what extent the second syllable is separated out, or elided into the first.

I'm from Munster, though have done most of my Irish speaking in adulthood in Connacht, so I'm probably somewhere between the two pronunications.
