I thought I knew, but my American English teacher tells me I'm wrong, despite knowing I learnt it from my Irish dad. Need to know if I'm indeed wrong or gain the confidence to go and hit him with my turnip.

Kind of like Sah-wen but no idea if I’m right or not

JeremiahTheBullfrog · 10/10/2023 17:10

It'll vary throughout the island.

But I would say: sow in

glitterfinder · 10/10/2023 17:11

In Ireland- soh-inn.

AutumnDay90 · 10/10/2023 17:12

Sow-een

DoorPath · 10/10/2023 17:12

Sow-en

VineRipened · 10/10/2023 17:13

Sah-win (England)

erikbloodaxe · 10/10/2023 17:16

Sow (pig) in

LizardOfOz · 10/10/2023 17:17

Sow in (like the pig)
Heard it pronounced Sam-hain on an audiobook which enraged me. How hard is it to check the pronunciation of unfamiliar words?!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/10/2023 17:28

My teacher said it's pronounced 'sown' which is kind of similar to 'sow-in'. I thought it was 'sar-win'. So we may both be kind of right.

Atmytethersend · 10/10/2023 17:38

Sown

ShowOfHands · 10/10/2023 17:40

Sow-en

Sort of.

muddyford · 10/10/2023 17:44

Sow-en. My sibling is a pagan and keeps me on the right pronunciation.

Garman · 10/10/2023 17:47

It’s not Sar-win. Where I’m from in Ireland it’s Sow (pig) -inn.

Abhannmor · 10/10/2023 18:01

Sow - in . Though my Foclóir Póca gives Saun as pronunciation. That's November.

Halloween is Oíche Shamhna . Which I pronounce , roughly , Eekha Howna.

I saw a video game once where the evil demon or whatever was called Sam Hayn. I kid you not.

Abhannmor · 10/10/2023 18:03

Ps there's no R sound. We only say R when it's written. Well most of us !

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 10/10/2023 18:04

the Scottish Gaelic pronunciation maybe different to Irish Gaelic the mh is often a v sound like Mhari black it's said as Varry

Marblessolveeverything · 10/10/2023 18:06

It will depend on dialect.

To me it is sow-in

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 10/10/2023 18:41

In Ireland, it's main sow (rhymes with cow)- Inn.

jonnytightlips · 10/10/2023 18:44

I say "Sow-inn" in the Mid-West

Spookymormonhelldream · 10/10/2023 18:55

Yup, Sow-en (sow to rhyme with cow).

ColleenDonaghy · 10/10/2023 19:32

Sow-un here, emphasis on the first syllable.

Liv999 · 10/10/2023 19:50

Ballygowenwater · 11/10/2023 10:51

MarkWithaC · 11/10/2023 11:08

I'd say Sow-ain (sow as in a female pig). Happy to be corrected though.

PyramusandThisbe · 11/10/2023 11:14

Why are people who aren't Irish and don't speak any Irish telling the poster, who has posted on Craicnet for a reason, how they would pronounce Samhain?

OP, here are examples of three different regional pronunciations of Samhain from the best online dictionary source -- you'll notice the only real difference is to what extent the second syllable is separated out, or elided into the first.

I'm from Munster, though have done most of my Irish speaking in adulthood in Connacht, so I'm probably somewhere between the two pronunications.
