Irish (the language)

Does anyone else feel a connection to it? My dad was a gaeilgoir but never taught us. But i'm 42 now and still feel a pull towards it. It's inexplicable. I spent a year in france but i feel nothing at all towards the language. But Irish draws me in massively.

Like Wales managed to revive Welsh didn't they. How did they do it and why don't/ can't we do similar anseo?

My theory is that we have a number of other ways to express our identity which are very distinctively Irish and highly valued- Gaelic games, music, literature, Hiberno English, culture generally that there has no been as strong an impetus as there might otherwise be. And as there is in some other countries with similar efforts to revive/retain their native language.

I feel a huge connection with it and people who just complain about how it's taught piss me off. They're just making excuses for their own laziness and not bothering to learn it.

Ballygowenwater · 05/08/2023 06:18

Dia duit gach duine. Táim ag úsáid mo fón póca ach tá ‘keyboard Gaeilge’ ann. Tá na spell check go
iontach!

Níl Gaeilge líofa agam ach úsáid mé na teanga gach lá agus úsáidim Gaeilge amháin le mó clann. Is Sasanach é mó fhear céile ach tá sé ag foghlaim cúpla focal sa teach.

CampsiteQueen · 05/08/2023 08:20

GRMA don 'thread' seo a thosú. Táimid ag déanamh iarracht mór Gaeilge a labhairt níos mó sa teach seo chomh maith. Tá mo mhac ag teacht abhaile ón nGaeltacht amárach - ní mbeidh cluear bith against cad atá á rá aige 🙈

Ah, beidh eolas agat cad atá le rá aige! Mar shampla :

’Scanraidh an bean an tí an croí ionam.’
‘Bhímuid ag ól at an dtrá leis na gcailíní .’
‘Chuir an múinteoir Tadhg abhaile mar bhí sé ag labhairt Béarla.’
’Bhí na ranganna leadránach.’

dearJayne · 05/08/2023 08:43

I'm Scottish but my mum is Irish and taught me bits when I was younger.

I love the language and am trying to learn more.

CampsiteQueen · 05/08/2023 08:48

@Guimpe Tá an cheart agat! Is cuimhin liom cúpla cinn de na rudaí sin nuair a bhí mé sa Ghaeltacht. Fuirímid cúpla litreacha (fós litreacha!!) ón mhac agus tá sé ag bhaint AN taitneamh as an nGaeltacht. Ceithre béile mór gach lá, spóirt gach tráthnóna, céilí gach oíche agus cairde ón gach chontae! Ceapaim go mbeidh an-díomá air filleadh abhaile...

Keykaty · 05/08/2023 08:54

For me, although I only have the school version, I still 40 years later can speak the cúpla focal and understand a good bit on TG4 and RnaG.

However, and sorry to say it, the association of Irish with Hard Republicanism and Gaelgóirí who often are fanatical puts me off a bit.

The Gaelscoilleanna are a great idea, but they are often chosen as a way of avoiding certain others.

MMBaranova · 05/08/2023 09:22

The level of Irish language use in everyday discourse (for an imaginary median person) interests and puzzles me. It’s on all the signs, but when I ask relatives why they don’t know and use the language more, as if I am aged six, I get answers like my great uncle’s “I know just enough Irish to not use it”.

But then, who am I to talk. I have a head full of Romance and Slavic languages plus English, and while Irish and Welsh sound amazing, my understanding is minimal.

Getting somewhere, anywhere, with Irish might be a far away retirement project.

Chickenkeev · 05/08/2023 11:38

PSA if any more proficient speakers feel like interjecting to translate where i don't have the Irish word, please feel free. It would be greatly appreciated.
