Scríobh mé ar thread eile gur cheart go mbéadh Gaeilge 'adequate' ag éinne atá ag smaoineamh bheith in a iarrthóir mar Uachtarán.
So tá súil agam go bhfuil siad go léir - Michael, Conor, Frances, Mairéad, whoever - ar Duolingo ! Tá Catherine scaoilte ó ranganna Ghaeilge😉
As I said over on the other thread, as long as the Constitution [of which the President is the defender] says that Irish is the first national language, the President should be able to function as Gaeilge.
I wouldn't expect them to do in-depth interviews, but Irish is of great ceremonial and cultural significance, and a President who couldn't at least make speeches and do a bit of schmoozing as Gaeilge isn't earning their keep! They have ample time between now and October to brush up their Irish, and it's never been easier to access classes, online and in person, so there's no excuse.
I think the same question should be put to all candidates and would-be candidates:
Can you assure us that you will be able to carry out the functions of Uachtarán na hÉireann adequately in the first national language?
