Moving to Dublin

My husband has been offered a office transfer to the Dublin branch of his office and we are trying to decide whether to accept it. We know the cost of living and housing is going to be higher but maybe the quality of life may be better?

We have 2 children 9 and 6 so our biggest concern is finding school places and which areas surrounding Dublin will be best to narrow our search. OH will be working in central Dublin so needs to be commutable. Which areas are we likely to get school places? Are there areas to avoid? We currently live in a urban suburb which is quite cosmopolitan so looking for something similar. We are a little worried the children may be subject to anti English sentiment, is that something that we need to take into account?

Thanks for any advice!

@JetTail "Biffo" was not from Louth. He was an Offaly man. That's where the word Biffo comes from. Big ignorant fucker from Offaly. Or in my case beautiful intelligent female from Offaly

JetTail · 23/05/2022 08:31

Harold's Cross is actually another area which would be walkable (or 10 min cycle) to the IFSC. I've lived in so many areas of Dublin. Please do not go for somewhere without either excellent transport links or walking distance because if he doesn't drive, he's dependent on a bus or two which will arrive 'any minute now!'

'Biffo' was a previous Taoiseach from Louth and it's surprisingly well-developed as a result of his tenure!

Off topic really but was 'Biffo' not from Offaly? Big ignorant fucker from offaly, was that not the acronym or am I going mad?

Gosh, I'm losing touch. I was actually wondering to myself as I passed through Louth often on my way down to Tramore. And I vaguely had a notion that Louth is the county just north of Dublin.
I'm not really doing much by way of selling the intelligence of the Irish 😂

I'm pretty sure that I'm the resident lunatic and you are correct.
I love the videos of him singing an auld come-all-ya after election and another one of him lost in Europe haha. God he was an embarrassment.

littlesnowdropfairy · 23/05/2022 08:37

@JetTail I'm puzzled altogether now😂 if you live in Dublin you surely wouldn't be going to Tramore via Louth?🤔

We've taken this post down as it felt a bit not in the spirit of the site.

Years since I lived in Dublin! Just ignore me. Lol.

It was a place in Offaly I passed through which was surprisingly well developed! Like one of the biggest towns in Offaly? Massive shopping centre thing?

I can clarify that Scotland is enroute to London from Holyhead! Or it was, this one time, when I took the ferry and drove to London. So it would make sense that Louth might be on the way to Tramore 😁😯😳

And using 'Biffo' is regarded as pretty derogatory & demeaning too. No great fan of Brian Cowen but he was pilloried for his appearance, weight & accent - would have been completely unacceptable for a woman, and I never liked it.

LadyEloise1 · 23/05/2022 08:53

@JetTail
Biffo was not from Louth.
He is from Offaly hence the nickname - Big Ignorant Fcker From O*ffaly
Smile

JetTail · 23/05/2022 08:53

This is Biffo singing a better song! 😜😱

I'm pretty sure that he was pilloried for taking the brunt of the bust for the EU and bailing out the banks! After he caused the fucking crisis lol.

I'm no fan of his politics and don't rate him as Taoiseach. As I said.

However, he was repeatedly attacked over his appearance, unacceptably in my opinion, and 'Biffo' perpetuates it.

I & my family were massively affected by the recession. Still recovering, really. But I don't hold one individual responsible (if I had to, my money would be on Bertie, not Brian), what a naive view.

LadyEloise1 · 23/05/2022 08:58

Sutton on the north side of Dublin is lovely and is on the DART so easy access to the North Quays for your dh work.

Housing is very expensive.
You won't have the NHS.

JetTail · 23/05/2022 09:02

I actually love that song that Cowen was attempting to sing. It's called Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore.
This is it by The High Kings (Obama's favoured Irish band who have played at the White House for him).

Or this version with Dolores Keane

I'm sorry that I have derailed the thread in your absence OP!

DP is from Dublin and we both know it well. As someone has already stated Monkstown, Sandymount etc areas are great to live in and have good transport links. Downside is property there is just as expensive as in the South East of the UK. From what I am told it is difficult to get into primary schools and nearly all are Catholic. (In theory you should be allowed in as none Catholics but I’m told that this just doesn’t happen.) Also all the people I know from there have needed to have two substantial incomes to support a mortgage.

JetTail · 23/05/2022 09:07

Since I moved to England, it has become very apparent to me that we have a very roundabout way of speaking compared to the English. For e.g. if in A&E or something, a normal person on a trolley might ask a nurse 'could I get some water please?'. I, however will say 'I wonder would you know where I might be able to get a glass of water?'. I'm pretty sure the poor nurses are baffled about my wondering and whether in fact he/she needs to call the psych team as apparently I'm wondering about the water facilities! 😂

TBH, I liked him. He was backed into a corner. I believe it was him who some banker came to late in an evening saying - bailout these banks tomorrow or we're fucked! Might not have been him. But it came out at some sort of investigation wrt the bailout. It was a Taoiseach I think.

Everyone with a job has VHI or Bupa or whatever. 3k per year? For the whole family? I can vouch that the healthcare you receive in Ireland is far beyond what the NHS provides.

I genuinely wonder if some of the people commenting on this thread have ever been to Dublin.
