Can any mumsnetters point me to anything about dress code for Irish weddings. I’m MOB and need to make sure I don’t look totally out of place! All day event starting around noon and going on into the early hours at a single outdoor/indoor location!

I would say v dressy, compared to England - people go all out. It's absolutely fine to tailor your look to suit your own taste though, dont feel like you have to wear a twin-set and pearls and a big hat if that's not you.

dafey · 18/01/2022 20:47

I love dressing up for an Irish wedding!

dafey · 18/01/2022 20:48

Greek weddings are great for glam too & Jewish. English weddings are not as fun to dress for.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2022 20:49

I prefer an English wedding. Irish weddings are so OTT now.

DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2022 20:51

Very glam and dressy, much more so than English weddings.

DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2022 20:52

Do you Jane? You should've been at mine, an English wedding massively livened up by DH's Irish family Grin

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2022 21:01

Drama** SIL is married to an English man. The barman at their wedding was totally confused by our drinks orders, pints of special, etc. Grin

Last wedding I was at in England of DH's cousin I just wore a dress from Dunnes and it was perfect.

I think it's a bit mad here now with all the professional makeup, updos and all that just for a guest!

bouncydog · 18/01/2022 21:02

Thank you all - lots to take in 😀

You definitely need some kind of headgear as MOB. You would look underdressed otherwise.

Tbf Ive not been to one in about 5 yrs, is this normal now?

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2022 21:04

I don't bother with it @dafey but most people do!

dafey · 18/01/2022 21:05

I just love the fact you can dress like it's the Oscars & no one would bat an eyelid 😆

I don't think that's true at all. Personally I think hats and fascinators are naff and ageing on all but a handful of people. And why should someone even WANT to stand out as MOB? I would go with just looking fabulous but yourself!
DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2022 21:08

At the last wedding I went to in Ireland, my first for about 15 years, I felt underdressed in a nice day dress. Most of the other women were wearing full on evening glam. It didn't matter one bit after a few drinks of course.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2022 21:08

After one of my BIL's weddings I had a full rundown of what everyone was wearing from one of my SIL's even though I had seen them for myself. I was exhausted listening to her. That's another thing now - going for dinner the following day.

Pucarbuile · 18/01/2022 21:09

I would say take your normal event outfit up a notch or two but don't buy into the MOB uniform. Be you or you'll feel off all day. My mum considered an amazing fishtail leather skirt with a silk top and fitted jacket but didn't want to risk scaring the very traditional in laws. I wish she had worn it, it would have been amazing.

Can you give a clue to the venue? Eg city centre hotel, private hire/country house, naice country hotel?

dafey · 18/01/2022 21:09

And why should someone even WANT to stand out as MOB?

One of my family members who was a MOB had outfit changes 😆

3luckystars · 18/01/2022 21:10

Definitely dress up, and some sort of head gear, you can’t be overdressed!! Enjoy it.

Anotherviewtoyou · 18/01/2022 21:10

@theleafandnotthetree I guess I’ve just never seen a wedding where the mothers didn’t wear something in their heads. I wouldn’t say it’s about Standing out - more looking like you didn’t make much of an effort.

I can just see the MN thread about upstaging the bride Grin

Marblessolveeverything · 18/01/2022 21:11

No hat here for MOB, chic and true to one's own style. Wedding could be a few day affair, dinner night before, lunch and bbq or meal next night. We like to really have a hooley. Enjoy

I was at a wedding 3 years ago and out of approx 150 female guests, I reckon 120 had hair and/or makeup professionally done. It's some industry. But it's a matter of taste, that 'done' look is not necessarily stylish in my book. Though some looked fab of course.

Considering I was wearing a red dress, designed for an IFTA appearance (not mine, a 'sleb obvs) I think I would have held my own Wink

Well my mother and my husband's mother were both bare-headed! And it didn't occur to me that they hadn't made an effort. They looked exactly what they were, nice middle aged women wearing lovely clothes that suited them and they were comfortable in....my mother even wore trousers! 😳

I've been looking for an excuse to get one of those for ever

https://www.bombshellhq.com

Arrange a fitting, tell them in advance some thing about yourself and the occasion. T

The perfect 'bombshell' will depend on your proportions. You might not notice from the pictures but their different styles work for different body shapes so go for the fitting to make sure you get the perfect one for you. Maybe the coat and dress combination to cover the outdoor / indoor parts of the event.

Take the dress with you for a fitting at https://www.rigbyandpeller.com for the perfect underpinnings.

Hope it all goes well for you.
Enjoy.

p.s. as for hats / fascinators. I'm really not a hat person and have been advised to wear 'important' earrings instead. It's all about what makes you feel good.
