Confused over travel

I'm confused over the current travel rules. I know to leave Ireland we need an essential reason but does that also apply for people arriving into Ireland?

For example if someone flew into Ireland and met the requirements for the negative PCR test taken 72 hours before arrival, completed passenger locator form and then quarantined for 5 days and did another PCR test, is that okay or do they also need an essential reason to arrive in the first place?

I know Christmas 2019 since I seen my family Sad

Notstrongandstable · 18/06/2021 13:26

We're trying to get from UK to Ireland with kids in tow.
Just re-read the guidelines..think I'm clear Confused
So me and DH will be fully backed by July..no problem, no test required. Kids need PCR tests. Fine.
We are also tested there courtesy of the HSE?
But... the have cited scenarios where the EU applied an "Emergency Brake" (who comes up with this BS!) snd that means if not vaxxed ie the kids, mandatory hotel quarantine is required?????. So it's fairly likely the brake could be applied to the UK by July due to rising cases here. So we could book and then not be able to go. I know this is the case with all travel but seems to feel incredibly likely given the numbers here
Has anyone else interpreted this differently?

Decorhate · 18/06/2021 20:28

I don’t think it will become clear until the middle of July. We have booked (the ferry) to go for a couple of weeks in August but have a flexible booking. Like others, dh & I are fully vaccinated so hopefully just screw days quarantine at the worst but sons won’t be vaccinated & no way would they want to come if they had to quarantine for 10 days. Really hoping the rules change again but then.

Notstrongandstable · 22/06/2021 11:07

I just called the Embassy in London to try to get some clarity over whether if there is no "emergency brake" the quarantine would still apply to kids. Spoke to the worlds most unhelpful person who said they will only announce the specifics around the 19th July. I appreciate it's not her job/decision but it's very unhelpful!
Their policy of obfuscation definitely helps stop people travelling!

MegCleary · 22/06/2021 19:07

@Notstrongandstable fair play on trying to get an answer

Notstrongandstable · 22/06/2021 19:18

Lady at embassy said they would only announce the specifics on the 19th Confused. So it's impossible to book anything without knowing what will be required for the kids.
Think we'll just try to meet in Belfast instead...not ideal but hey ho! I'm worried if I let summer slip by we'll be back in the pits again with restrictions in winter. Hope to goodness I'm wrong!

MegCleary · 22/06/2021 20:21

But they haven’t announced specifics for now. No one knows if they go now do children isolate 10 days as unvaccinated.

Or have I missed an update …

Please don't bring the delta variant to Ireland! It was Christmas travel last December that brought the UK variant to Ireland!

MegCleary · 23/06/2021 07:40

No one wants to do that, I will have PCR as will the family. Have booked cabin so can avoid mixing on ferry. Happy to quarantine 5 days. Happy to do PCR after 5 days. Can to lateral daily if desired. But I need to see my parents. Not seen them since 2019. They are fully vaxxed. We (besides the children are fully vaxxed).
There have been no cases where I live for 3 weeks. I go down to the local level and check daily.
I am happy to take the children out of school early and sit in the house for a few days here, limit contract before we go.
I need to go home.

You do know that people have been travelling the whole time? I have several friends who have been back to see elderly parents even before vaccines were a thing. They said the planes were full. I haven't seen my family for 2 years. It's summer, they're double vaxxed and so are we...what more do you want me to do?
MegCleary · 23/06/2021 10:12

@Notstrongandstable I’m thinking of building a raft…..hop on
It feels like those of us that waited will be penalized. I cancelled our Christmas trip home for safety reasons and that was right. I don’t want to go to pubs, restaurants etc I want to sit at home with my parents and drink tea and talk shite. See my sister and brother in law and nieces. That’s it. In the arse of Connemara half a mile to another souls house.

user1496146479 · 23/06/2021 22:33

@Notstrongandstable
That's the problem, people have kept traveling, so the variants keep spreading.
78% increase in UK cases today based on last week!! Ireland can't cope with that, they are further behind in vaccination

wannabebetter · 29/06/2021 23:31

My son got refused to fly from Birmingham to Dublin today with Ryanair because he had no PCR neg confirmation. BUT... he lives in NI, and had confirmed lateral flow test, had completed the passenger locator form correctly, we were picking him up from Dublin to drive to NI with no stops in ROI. Further, Ryanair customer service recorded message (as you can't actually speak to anyone) says refer to government website for guidance, and it says as per my comment below - got him home, eventually with air Lingus to Belfast but VERY out of pocket - do you think I have a leg to stand on??

wannabebetter · 29/06/2021 23:36

This is the guidance I thought applied.... www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/coronavirus-covid-19-travelling-within-common-travel-area

ChimneyPot · 29/06/2021 23:49

@wannabebetter

You have linked to the U.K. rules. Flying in to Dublin the Irish rules apply and a PCR test is required

Notstrongandstable · 30/06/2021 11:16

Wanna -
Ireland (ROI)have not reinstated the Common Travel Area. NI is part of UK, so it's a domestic flight, no tests required.
Did your son not look into the rules/requirements of flying from UK to ROI before he went?

ChimneyPot · 30/06/2021 11:53

He is actually lucky that RyanAir didn’t let him board the flight.
If he had arrived in Dublin without a negative PCR the army would have brought him to Mandatory Hotel Quarantine.

Decorhate · 30/06/2021 20:28

I appreciate the concerns about the delta variant but if the Irish government allow people living in Ireland to take holidays abroad from next month how is that ok but not Irish people going back to see their families? I appreciate that they may not allow the holidays after all.

I am desperate to go back, parents are in their 80s. If the kids have to quarantine for 10 days dh & I may just take it in turns to go on our own.

kissmelittleass · 02/07/2021 09:52

I'm in Ireland haven't seen my elderly parents for over a year and they have no family local to them so I really need to go home to see them this month I was just waiting for the 19th to book incase anything changes.
It will be me double vaccinated, teenage son double vaccinated and a non vaccinated child so I understand we don't need to do anything to get into England but need a covid test to get back into Ireland on our return but I cannot find anywhere that does it near my parents area!
Very confusing I'd of thought must high street pharmacies in uk would do the covid test for travel?

MegCleary · 02/07/2021 13:47

theDudesmummy · 02/07/2021 15:10

WWYD in this situation? Live in Ireland but UK citizens. Holiday home is in an EU country. DH and I both double vaxxed, DS too young to be. Normally every year DS and I fly to holiday home, DH drives. We also meet DDs there (they live in other EU countries).

So, after no holiday last year: We all have air tix booked out of Dublin for just after 19 July. PCR test booked for DS two days before that. So we can all fly.

But, for various reasons, we would like it, if it is possible, if DH drives as usual. He would need to take the ferry from Dublin, drive across the land bridge of the UK, cross to Calais and then drive across several EU countries. The destination country has no problem with us, has been letting in double-vaxxed or PCR-tested people for weeks now, no quarantine.

But would you take the risk of there being problems at some other borders? Personally I dont think there will be a problem (whether or not Ireland actually gets the official EU Covid passes issued by then). He will have both his Irish vax certificate and a PCR with him.

Decorhate · 02/07/2021 15:45

I think the problem will be going via the UK. Lots of EU countries not keen on arrivals from the UK at the moment.

Friend wants to visit her new grandchild in Germany soon & not sure it will be possible. Could he change & get the ferry to France instead?

theDudesmummy · 02/07/2021 17:17

We did think of the ferry to France but the timings didn't really work (very few options per week), may rethink that though....

theDudesmummy · 02/07/2021 17:49

Having looked again at Dublin-Cherbourg ferry route, I think that may be a better plan...not have touched the UK may be better for all the borders

Radyward · 04/07/2021 10:43

We were due to fly to spain on the 17th july.moved from lasy summer Paid Ryanair again to move it to next summer. Looked at one night in a luxury hotel as my husband as a milestone birthday in august.omg outrageus. Way cheaper for the flights for the 4 of us to to fly to the south of france for 4 nights and have birthday cake in the sun. We are both vaxed. 2 kids arent. Omg i cannot subject my kids to a pcr test to get back to Dublin !! This has to change fgs
