I'm cooped up in a tiny terraced shabby house 880sq foot but I need to be near my dc2's school and from October, I hope, we need to be a bus away from either UCD or TCD (we are). Not sure DC2 is headed for uni though, so perhaps perhaps I could have some options to move in 4-6 years.

I need space, to do yoga, have a big table for clay, dressmaking as well as a kitchen table! Also, just a bit of luxury. So a new duplex would be lovely. Not in to gardening.

So, can anybody suggest a place that is as nice as Skerries or Dalkey or Greystones but further away from Dublin and so cheaper.

Has to be less than 300k because I'd like a bit left over if I sold this house so that I could come back to Dublin if for infrequent reunions and meetups. Realistically that might mean staying in a hotel in Dublin four nights a year. I like the sound of that.
Extra challenge, I don't want to drive, so I like the idea of being near a station as well. I'd like to be able to be back in Heuston or Connolly Station in max two hours if needed.
I'm probably dreaming believing that either of my kids will ever be able to move out! But........ moving a bit further out of Dublin might motivate them to try.

What locations spring to mind!?

Sorry, prices are irrelevant really, what I need is suggestions for towns on the coast that are beautiful places to live.

I’m looking at Carlingford, I often look at fantasy homes outside Dublin.

When lockdown is over go a few day trips to a few places to begin?

Oh Carlingford looks lovely, I agree.

I've been to Termonfeckin, don't remember being blown away.

I'll look at Clogherhead.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I would love to go on a trip round Ireland, just thinking ''could I live here'' as wander about.

look at the price of this duplex!

I couldn't believe it. The views are amazing, I can see it's not far from the town.

But I think this is for right to buy or first time buyers or something. I don't think I'd be eligible to buy this but I'd love it.

Carlingford on my list of places to scope out.

Bit worried that Dundalk was nicknamed ''el paso'' (I was reading up on Dundalk. I have the type of accent that is perceived to be a bit English. I'm not English and if I were so what, but I have been ''accused'' of sounding English. Would I need to worry about that in Louth /Dundalk?

@UrsulaVdL

omg that just reminds me of the squalor I'm enduring right now! Well, I exaggerate, my small house is not that small or that shabby.

I'm lazy and I don't want any massive projects!

Also Mornington or Bettystown in Meath?

WhatWouldZenoDo · 01/02/2021 19:54

I was playing around on the map and I put in the distance from mornington to drogheda station and I was shocked it was over an hour's walk! Like an hour and 20 minutes.
Maybe I'll need one of those motorised scooters.
I feel like a bad mother that I'm so excited for when my children move out.

I like those locations though, Mornington, Bettystown, Laytown.
I saw that Waterford scored highly in a Sunday Times survey ?

Property: 1 Lisfennel Close, Dungarvan, Waterford myhome.ie/4478197
Wow, that is value for money. I like it. Bit dated on the outside but meh, so big inside. Nothing needs doing immediately, it'd all be done on your own timescale. Area looks lovely!

The train stops in Bettystown too. I was imagining you had a small car & could drive to the station.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 02/02/2021 11:38

Wow, bettystown looking more appealing. I could get a car in my retirement but i l8ke not needing one (now). Bus stops in all directions where i am now

No offence to anyone from Bettystown, but from an amenity point of view it's not great. If you want to go north if Dublin, I think you'd be better off in the Carlingford area, then you could go to Strandfield for cake and a browse (it's a very lovely cafe/antique shop/florist/grocer) just at the turn off to Carlingford from the M1.

Otherwise I would go to Wicklow , maybe around Delgany, so you'd have Greystones for shopping, the sea, the train to town and proximity to Avoca at Kilmac, Mount Usher, and Kilruddery for the aforementioned cake and browsing opportunities.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 02/02/2021 17:34

Noted!!

Clogherhead and Carlingford are too near Sellafield for my liking. Irrational I know because if the Irish Sea gets contaminated it will spread down to the places I'd recommend-
Dalkey - pricey but you might meet Bono or Matt Damon in Finnegan's pub. Glasthule - Cavistons and Sandycove with Dun Laoire nearby.
Greystones - I just love it.

Anoisagusaris · 02/02/2021 18:50

I’m guessing you want somewhere a little less pricey than Howth?

FionaMacCool · 02/02/2021 19:15

Waterford?

www.daft.ie/for-sale/duplex-71-mount-suir-gracedieu-co-waterford/2841195

Direct train line to Heuston.
Motorway- approx 1.5 hours to central Dublin on a Saturday morning.

Sadly yes!

Although, today as I stepped off the bus and walked past a supermarket, a chemist, a dominos, a laundrette, a newsagents between the bus stop and my house, I thought, why am I fantasising about moving? Everything I need in my old age is on my door step here. Why am I making life difficult? I need to be content with the ground beneath my feet.

It's covid, the restlessness that comes with never having the house to myself. I'm an essential worker and i get home and my teenagers are just draped all over the sofa, wrappers everywhere, neither of them having left the house all day, both of them snapping at me! They used to go out. What I actually want is the house to myself

I need to give my head a wobble as they say on MN. It's like I want to run away and I'm dressing it up in a where could I move to thread!
