Buying from local and Irish businesses

Would anyone be up for a thread to swap recommendations and suggestions?

I’ve been trying to buy from local shops and Irish businesses lately and I have a number of birthdays coming up soon, as well as a mid winter event that cannot be spoken about yet.

I’ll be buying mostly online. And while I’m happy to support any store that is employing locally, I’m less inclined to order from them online as that doesn’t help my local community iyswim.

I’d probably have bought a jo malone candle or a Molton Brown gift set for the upcoming birthday, I’d love a suggestion for something along those lines.

Atlantic Aromatics for essential oils and massage blends.

It's a bit off topic, and possibly more to do with DP/DH than some of us. But it relates to beer!

My DH and his sports teams/friends are only buying local beer. It's a small thing, but just not imported stuff.

Doesn't help for wine though :)

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 04/09/2020 10:10

Yes! I'm partial to a craft beer too :)

Also love thehandmadesoapcompany.com/ for soaps, hand wash, shampoo, conditioner etc. they also do hand sanitiser.

I find that the scent from their shampoos and conditioners actually lasts in my hair.

I have some hand wash by The Handmade Soap Company and it smells delicious, Grapefruit and May Chang. Avoca No. 4 Tea Rose soap is still my favourite though, I use their hand wash and also buy bar soap for the shower. The bar soap is harder than most so lasts for ages and doesn't go mushy, it doesn't make me itchy (a lot of soap brands do) and the smell lasts on my skin.

I bought a candle by Rathbone recently (Irish make though not a very Irish name!) and it’s lovely.

Maybe it’s an anglicisation of Ráth Bán? White ring... sorry totally off topic.

Following the thread for all the nice suggestions though.

Last Christmas I bought soaps from Palm Free Irish Soap. I was going to give some as presents and keep some for myself but in the end needed them as an emergency present so didn't get to try them. One of them made me sneeze, I bought a range so I'm not sure which one it was.

www.ardkeen.com/shop/hampers-and-gifts/

This shop is local to me and stocks a lot of artisan Irish products.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar - they are lovely soaps and so pretty

I just got an ad from mumsnet for this company- looks charming! www.eco-bee-fabrics.com/

fivedogstofeed · 06/09/2020 10:22

Jo Browne or Sass and Boho are both online and sell gorgeous Irish made products.

bubblesforlife · 06/09/2020 10:33

The handmade soap company.
It has yellow packaging.
The lemongrass range has the most beautiful scent. It’s handmade in Ireland!
They sell it in the Kilkenny store I think

Just bumping this thread. Buying local is more important than ever, with so many businesses having to close their doors for the next six weeks. And so many shops will have bought extra stock for Christmas. I know Amazon is very convenient (and often works out cheaper) but try your local retailer first. Even if they don't have a website, they may have a Facebook page where they can advertise their wares.

Can I give a shout out to The Gutter Bookshop in Temple Bar. It's an independent bookshop and the owner (Bob) is lovely. They'll post out books to you. This is a link to their website gutterbookshop.com/ I might add that I don't work for this shop and I've no connection to any of the staff.

We are aiming for a ‘spend all our money in Ireland’ Christmas and level 5.

Kennys.ie is my go to instead of Amazon for books. V good and v quick delivery.

RuggerHug · 20/10/2020 12:36

Reuzi.ie is a good spot for ethical gifts. Justbuyirish.com has a huge amount of places listed, I've been finishing up my Christmas shopping with that as my go to.

7Days · 20/10/2020 13:31

Marking place. Good thread!

7Days · 20/10/2020 13:36

Mccambridges.com looks good for foodie gifts, and they do Irish craft beer hampers as well, for a pp wondering.

jaimebravo · 20/10/2020 22:06

Found this in the times today, as well as this thread, its good place to start when going local.

I buy jewellery from two local ni businesses

www.linesandcurrent.com and www.bohemianvixen.com and another shop in Belfast that stocks lots of local products www.wearebornandbred.com

Mixitupalot · 20/10/2020 22:21

Placemarking!

So important at the min to support local .

Inextremis · 20/10/2020 22:36

Probably not appropriate for gifts (might be a bit smelly!) but I can recommend Gannet fishmongers for fresh fish delivery - based in Galway, they deliver to other counties, not sure if all of them, but definitely Mayo! Also Mescan beer is made locally to us - one of the guys used to be our vet - lovely man, lovely beer!

Radyward · 20/10/2020 23:03

Elmgrove farm. From Co.meath wild flowers delivered nationwide in a lovely box and ribbon .

LadyEloise · 23/10/2020 09:37

Mookie and Boo- the South Beach candle is divine.
Based in Wicklow.
Check out the website.
Lots of other products too.
Sorry I can't do links.

thelegohooverer · 01/11/2020 23:56

unbound has a lovely range of gifts, some nice things for cycling fanatics, lots of quirky mugs, a range of colours of leuchtturm if you’re in to bullet journaling,
and this gorgeous mug for those on opposite sides of the Irish Sea. Worth a browse for gift ideas.

Thank you @thelegohooverer
Great to get good websites for gifts.

Deadringer · 02/11/2020 13:03

Great idea for a thread! There are loads of ideas and links all over facebook. I just bought some lovely soaps from earthmother.ie. i am really going to make an effort to buy irish made sustainable gifts this year and am encouraging everyone i know to do the same. Every little helps, as they say.
