Brexit (sorry)

DH and I were chatting away as usual as we watched the news. He usually fills me in on what's being said on Twitter and I fill him in on what's being said on MN but neither of us know how a hard Brexit will impact Ireland.

I looked up our exports and imports (just on Wikipedia so I don't know how accurate it is). DH was wondering if we should stockpile some stuff...

I don't know how much of our stuff comes actually from the UK versus from elsewhere but via the UK. How much is shipped into Dublin and Belfast and Rosslare/Belview from the UK? Is anything shipped directly from Europe into Cork. (I'm literally going by my knowledge of passenger routes.) Does stuff from the US come straight here or via the UK?

Do the Irish government have plans? Thoughts?

By the way I've not mentioned the Irish/UK border because in my opinion it's an absolute disgrace that the people of Northern Ireland have been treated like this, basically as if they don't matter. It makes me want to vomit.

Good for you Bees. I'm a big fan of dual citizenship.

I was just wondering this and knew they'd be a thread on MN. Nothing useful to add but watching

SixInTheBed
I disagree - I think The Journal article is about Fine Gael rushing to Leo's defence after his gaffe and trying to put a certain gloss on it. Smile

Apileofballyhoo · 22/07/2018 10:40

bean I think Leo has a fair point. At the moment there are no agreements in place for the UK to use European airspace after Brexit. There are no agreements in place for anything. I agree his wording was undiplomatic but I can see his point.

From the news today, May is under siege with nothing really in place. The selfish shower of fucking arseholes
Part of me wonders if its going to be alright without too much upheaval or if we will be flung over a cliff all in one go.
We have no alternative plans if the cliff option appears. Going to have to white knuckle it but I would say one thing for Ireland, you do have the rest of the EU to give some form of support when England collapses under its own hubris and spitefulness.

Apileofballyhoo · 22/07/2018 11:24

lola I feel so sorry for the people of the UK, I really do. The morning after the vote I just felt people had been duped and they would suffer. Nothing has happened to change my mind. And I agree completely with your selfish shower of fucking arseholes diagnosis.

I'm very worried about Northern Ireland. But I can see riots in the rest of the UK too.

Yes, worst case scenario for us is that we have support of 26 other countries and lots of EU grants coming in annually. And we still have a fair amount of investment from the US and China.

Leo has always been blunt as fuck. One of the reasons I tolerate him, tbh. At least he speaks his mind and won't be pushed around. And Simon Coveney is pretty Frank these days too actually. They are a hell of a lot more straight in the way they talk than anyone in Westminster, who still just talk about Brexit like they're on the hustings. Not a straight answer out of any of them.

Somewhereovertheroad · 22/07/2018 12:52

Living in Northern Ireland I am worried that we will be hardest hit. As soon as the DUP deal ends with the UK government they will drop NI like a hot potato.

The government of Ireland will be concerned with its voters and NI won't be its top priority.

Where will that leave us? The DUP who never supported the Good Friday Agreement in the first place will be overjoyed if it falls apart. Sinn Fein will be delighted to up the anti British sentiments in NI.

What will happen to the ordinary, middle of the road - just wanting to live life and get on with it - person who lives in NI?

It's not going to go well is it?

Apileofballyhoo · 22/07/2018 13:14

Somewhere I am so worried about the GFA. It's absolutely typical of the Tories to screw over the North. An awful lot of people in England don't see N.Ireland or its people as being British at all, and just see it as an Irish problem, nothing to do with the rest of the UK.

I worry about the Irish government not sticking up for our citizens, and I'm glad we have the EU behind us, and that any Irish citizen is an EU citizen. It must mean something. So many here have an ingrained anger for the signatories of the Treaty, for abandoning our people in NI.

I wonder and wonder and wonder about solutions. An independent Northern Ireland? What way do the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands work? As I understand it, they are not part of the UK or the EU.

It's a mess. I hope it does not become a bloody mess.

Did Leo think about the Irish planes flying over UK airspace is my point.
We'd be rightly stuck wouldn't we ? - here on this small island on the edge of Europe

Apileofballyhoo · 22/07/2018 16:07

There are other routes to Europe bean, but yes I am worried about supplies getting to Ireland and wonder how well prepared we are for them not coming through the UK.

Apparently the UK are considering stockpiling food and essential medicines.

I can't help wondering which medicines will be deemed non essential and why is the NHS paying for them in the first place.

MiggledyHiggins · 27/07/2018 13:51

Apparently the UK are considering stockpiling food and essential medicines.

Well, obviously Ireland would help them by sending food and medical aid. I cant imagine any country letting their neighbours starve or die...

Apileofballyhoo · 03/08/2018 13:43

Leo mentioned stock piling here regarding medicines as UK and Ireland are often considered as a single market (oh the irony) by companies.

I am still wondering about supply chains. How much stuff comes in directly or and how much via the UK?

Also wondering about UK owned shops.

On a lighter note, did anyone spot this?

Excellent choice of crisps btw Wink
