Finnish Baby sleep boxes

I am currently pregnant and am looking for a safe way for my newborn to sleep and have heard that the baby boxes that are very popular in Finland for reducing cot death have now become available on ebay and amazon. Has anyone tried one yet?

I am really paranoid about cot death as had a friend whose baby succumbed to this awful death and hear that these baby boxes have been proven to reduce the risk.

It would be really useful to know if anyone has heard of them and what they think about them as I need to think about buying a cot soon.

Haha no baby, you're not!

Justmuddlingalong · 19/01/2016 14:53

The description on the ebay page says it's 'inspired' by the Finnish baby box. It's unbranded and mentions nothing about the mattress conforming to British standards. On that basis, I would be very wary of buying one.

Iwantakitchen · 19/01/2016 14:54

A cardboard box for 80 pounds. Well I never.

Just get a small ikea crib, a Moses basket, a cot. They are all safe alternatives. The best advice about cot death is from SIDS not from eBay. And the reduction of cot death in Finland data probably dates back many years as the government there has been giving out those boxes for free for decades.

emmawrigley · 19/01/2016 14:55

no, I found someone selling them on ebay and was considering getting one for my baby when he/she arrives and I wanted an opinion on whether anyone has used them/heard of them etc and what their opinion is..

I think there are many options OP that help reduce the risk of SIDS, I also feel you are on the sell.

Ok well my opinion is to avoid as the seller has no reputation as they have only just started selling them in eBay what a coincidence.

I take offence to being called a liar SweetAdeline with your comments. They are unnecessary and uncalled for!!!

The problem is OP this box that has appeared on eBay is based on the idea from Finland, they aren't certified safe, it is irresponsible to buy and sell these. It's no better than me selling you a box that my vegetables come in for £70!

The concept from Finland is a great one but wait until there is a certified option here in the UK

Justmuddlingalong · 19/01/2016 15:13

Why does the 'inspired' product use all the spiel for the original product on it's ebay selling page? Doesn't promote much faith in a baby product. IMHO.

NerrSnerr · 19/01/2016 15:23

I wouldn't buy it from EBay. I wouldn't trust the safety of the mattress. I know the boxes in Finland are a great idea but I wouldn't buy a knock off version.

Jumperooathon · 19/01/2016 16:02

You can buy the real one on their website and they'll post it to the uk. Definitely wouldn't trust an eBay one!

This sounds suspiciously advertorial!

PeaceLoveAndMincePies · 19/01/2016 17:56

My DS certainly weed all over his Moses basket and I don't think I'd put a baby back into a wee-soaked cardboard box, even if I had wiped it down.
I do love the idea of them, it's very quaint, but do any Finnish babies actually sleep in them these days? Are they not just given and accepted for the sake of tradition?

Jumperooathon · 19/01/2016 17:57

Oh Sad well I've got an Abel and Cole box you have have for a fiver. Just put some ripped up newspaper in for bedding. Job done.

TheCatsMeow · 19/01/2016 18:01

How did your babies wee/poo all over the cot? Didn't they have nappies on? I'm confused I genuinely can't see how that issue would arise ever

TheSecondViola · 19/01/2016 18:34

I don't think you even know what SIDS is.

Babies who can roll over wouldn't be going in a small box. There is no difference between the box and a basket. A baby who suffocated because they rolled over in any bed or box would have suffocated, not died of SIDS.

PeaceLoveAndMincePies · 19/01/2016 19:21

I don't remember how it happened, but it did happen. We seem to have poo dramas most days in this house, so I'm definitely doing something wrong.

TheCatsMeow · 19/01/2016 19:23

Peace that made me laugh Grin i did get projectile pooed on twice whilst bathing him so I know how you feel!

Sleepybeanbump · 19/01/2016 19:30

Also, if you look up finnish baby boxes on the web, there are many positive articles available on these wonderful boxes.

Yeah, op, this reads totally naturally and doesn't in any way give it away that you are the eBay seller...Hmm

JeanGenie23 · 19/01/2016 19:51

It was this post that made me think she is the seller!!

I believe that they come with all safety checks. I wouldn't buy anything for my baby that isn't safety tested, besides, in this country, it would be illegal to supply a mattress that doesn't confirm to requirements.

emmawrigley · 19/01/2016 20:47

I was simply asking for a discussion on whether or not anybody would use one of these, not be be insulted and accused of all sorts by the uneducated.

I am not going to say anymore because it's not nice and your comments are, as I say, without evidence.

Amy further slanderous comments and you will be reported unless you have the evidence to back up your assertions.

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 19/01/2016 20:52

Slander? Do you mean the people suggesting you might be the seller? Others just gave honest opinions about why they wouldn't use the boxes.

Pp did make a good point about SIDS. If you are pregnant or selling products to pregnant people please do your research. The lullaby trust is a really good and informative website on safer sleeping.
