Any ideas on how to earn £100-200 a month when you work full-time?

All advices given in this forum for money saving are really good, especially in this credit crunch environment!
I am full-working mum with 2 years old DS and also full-time working DH. The vast majority of our salaries goes to mortgage/bills/daily expenses and childcare costs, not to mention that our special treats are kept to very minimum. So I decided that I need some extra work, which I have never done before? I don?t need much extra, I just want to have my spare little cash for a haircut, coffee in Starbucks or my favourite meal ? sushi.
Having in mind that I work full-time and have a child to take care after work, I can only do something late evenings or weekends. I tried online surveys but it takes like half a year to build up £40? I am thinking to offer babysitting services by dropping leaflets in neighbouring streets, also maybe to do some home typing (?) or independent courier (?)? Is there any job that would earn me £25-50 a week without having to spend all my spare time for it? Perhaps I am naïve.. but that is life and that?s how you learn to live.
Thank you for any sort of advice.

Babysitting
cleaning
bar work
waitressing

DaisymooSteiner · 22/12/2009 15:34

You could do bank as an HCA at your local hospital - you'd probably be expected to go on a (paid) training course first but doing one 7.5 hour shift at a weekend would get you about £50 after tax and NI - more if it was a Sunday.

pinkteddy · 22/12/2009 15:39

Another vote for bar work. I used to earn approx £100 per month doing that. It is hard work though.

Twinkleandpearls · 22/12/2009 15:41

When we went through a really tough time financially last year I took on some cleaning jobs and dp did some dog walking and cleaning.

toja555 · 22/12/2009 15:44

Thanks for the first advices that I received on here, very appreciated! Although.. I am not a sales person and I don?t really want to work in a bar (mind, I am in my thirties so probably too old to a bar atmosphere).
I?d like to provide services instead of selling? (excluding bar waitress, I guess).

Daisy, what is bank as an HCA..?

Reality?, I did not think of that so I know so little. But I guess it probably pays off only if it is locally due to travelling time + transport costs. I will have to research this work area although I would probably have expected some more? intellectual work (sorry no offence to anyone).

Daisy?, thanks. I though HCA might need some medical qualifications then. But I will also google about that.

Have you any experience of minute taking? Local authorities are always looking for clerks to support school governor's meetings. Pay is usually very good - around £10 - 15 per hour, more in London. Hours are quite unsociable though - you can be working up to 11pm at night sometimes.

DaisymooSteiner · 22/12/2009 16:25

You can choose what part of the hospital you work in if you're bank staff - often people end up having 'regular' wards that they like (from what I know, I have to admit that I've never done it myself).

I have a permanent job in a hospital and I find working nights works really well - for instance if you do a Saturday night then you will get a higher rate of pay. I also find that if you're just working one night rather than several on the trot then a quick nap late afternoon/early evening keeps me going until my break, then I just sleep til lunchtime the following day and go to bed early that night. You don't miss out on much that way as it's just like having a long lie-in on Sunday and you're around the rest of the weekend.

toja555 · 22/12/2009 16:26

pinkteddy, I like your advice! No, I have no experience in minute writting, but I am quite good at picking the right points... unsociable hourse suit me even better! I shall go through my council's website to check vacancies, should I?

I know online surveyts take forever to build up the cashing-in amount... after a year, I'm getting close to my £50 minimum for Yougov

How about trying to get on the books of several mysery shopper companies? The more you do the more you earn per hour, plus you get free stuff you're shopping eg meals and eye tests. Its a bit hit and miss how many fit the times you can do though.

Earthstar · 22/12/2009 16:28

ironing
babysitting
as for home typing (?)doubt there is any demand for this
or independent courier (?)? at weekends and weekends??? maybe delivering catalogues /free papers?

Do you have any skills?
Can you teach music or tutor A level students?
Can you organise one-off events?

pinkteddy · 22/12/2009 16:29

Yes - if you can't find anything, try giving the department a call to ask about vacancies - they will probably be called 'governor support team' or something similar. Most offer training so it probably doesn't matter if you haven't done the exact same thing before. Best of luck!

Hi Toja - I just started a sideline which may suit you. If you are able to post your email address I'll send you a message about it.

serinBrightside · 22/12/2009 19:12

Barefoot books or Pheonix cards are always looking for reps, works along the lines of Avon but I think you get to keep more of the profit.

2madboys · 22/12/2009 19:39

Serin - I do Phoenix. We're not supposed to advertise on boards like this so that's why I asked Toja to put her email on. Toja - let me know if you'd like some more info.

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 22/12/2009 21:06

I know you don't want to do sales, but a friend of mine makes far more than you're looking for by being a rep for Kleeneze. I expect you can find details on their website.

blithedance · 22/12/2009 21:14

Can you do some overtime or freelancing in your line of normal work? The hourly rate might be better if it's what you are already skilled to do.

DaniellaC · 22/12/2009 22:09

Mystery shopping is always good and sometimes you get the treats for free (starbucks/costa/hmv)as well as getting paid to do it. You can do them in your lunch or on your way home cause most only take 5/10 mins
Try www.retaileyes.com or google TNS

toja555 · 23/12/2009 14:37

Thank you all for your ideas. I will have a look at all of them (can?t really do at the moment as I am at work). I would love the idea to freelance my professional skills, however need to boost my confidence somehow (I am good at work but maybe too narrow niche?).
Why I am against sales job? I remember having a friend who became a representative of X, and suddenly started keeping frequently in touch with all the friends. It was kind of obvious that she wants to sell things. None of the friends felt comfortable ever since, because we would always think ?what is the real reason why she wants to meet me?). I don?t want to inconvenience myself and my friends. That it is?
(I am a bad sales person by nature, anyway).

Hi just to thread crash the mystery shopping thing do you get paid well for this? And also can you do it whilst on maternity?

In regards to op i used to do avon and used to earn around 80 every 3 weeks, it depends how many customers you have

DaniellaC · 30/12/2009 17:45

Depends how many you do really for most you get between 5-10 pounds fee and 2.50 mileage and your meal/drinks/some money to spend if not a specific purchase. I'm not sure about if you can do it on maternity leave sorry.
