Cost of fuel

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but just had to pay £100 to fill up my very bog standard car. Everywhere cheaper had sold out.

We aren't exactly silly with our money, but can see us having to rein in spending even more.

Nothing really sensible to say, but it looks only set to get worse.

I remember when people were outraged when petrol hit £1. I just keep topping up when I hit half a tank now.
UK need to make up with Russia. Trumps done this on purpose to make his buddies rich.

Scared0112 · 31/03/2026 14:07

1.85 here this morning. I had fumes and no choice but to stop. Put £45 in which would usually be just over half. I got two bars. I genuinely googled whether I’d been scammed/something was wrong with the pump etc because wtaf.

bumblebee1000 · 31/03/2026 14:16

Our small local Jet station was selling petrol at £1.26 litre, its always cheap and has a queue..we just happened to need fuel a few days before things went wobbly so filled up, now its about £1.47 litre. I notice the supermarkets put prices up quickly.

Where did you get this untrue information from?

Norway have amongst the most expensive pump prices in the world. Converting to sterling it’s typically 50p+ more, per litre, for petrol.

Tapping a small amount of extra oil in the North Sea, and then selling it on the international markets where its quantity won’t move the dial, will do absolutely nothing for the UK motorist.

Exactly this. Thank you for saving me a job.

Whenever people have this kind of mindset, or thought processes I always think.

It's not too late.

There is nothing stopping changes being made to future proof our country now.

Even if things that should have been done 10 years ago were not done.

It can still be started now.

Whether they do it or not is a different story. But no point in crying over the past.

Well, of course. It’s like the saying about planting an orchard - the best time was ten years ago, the second best is today.

But I always acknowledge the cost of what we failed to do. It’s good to recognise we should have done better.

if only we’d actually learn from the mistakes.

QwestSprout · 31/03/2026 16:31

Nearlyadoctor · 31/03/2026 10:51

That’s 0.91p per litre - your car obviously wasn’t empty as it’s many years since fuel was that price approx 2005 !!

Well no of course it wasn't empty, that's filling it from however much was left in it, but even if it was down to the reserve it wouldn't cost more than £48.96. (136*36).

midgetastic · 31/03/2026 16:51

If only we would learn from our mistakes … I echo that

Your moral compass needs recalibrating.

And we've got so much oil in the North Sea to drill but .. Net Zero (even though Norway are drilling relentlessly and their petrol is much cheaper).

But you'd not have exclusive use of it. Oil is sold as commodity on international markets to the highest bidder. Unless you paid the highest price for it, you would get it. Did you know that?

Sorry , that made me chuckle.

MikeRafone · 10/04/2026 06:17

what surprises me is people complain about the price of fuel, yet it was £1.36 a litre in 2012 and if you watch the way people drive and how they waste fuel by their driving style, it’s as if it’s still 50p a litre.

driving at 60mph instead of 75mph will save £4.50 in a standard car over a 200 mile journey. Anticipating leaving the motorway, approaching a red light, not accelerating too fast or changing gear too quickly, will save fuel.

JohnofWessex · 10/04/2026 08:00

My oldest was at Oxford so we spent 4 years of driving up from the West Country to see him.

The numbers of 4x4's that were doing well over the speed limit even when fuel prices peaked over the war in Ukraine was huge, clearly price isnt an issue for many people but being a twat is.

Also of course lots of vans - I might have thought that employers might be asking questions about how their vehicles were driven but clearly not.

MikeRafone · 10/04/2026 08:06

I can’t understand why someone will be overtaking on a long motorway exit junction ( many have an incline) then slam breaks on 🤷‍♀️

just lift the accelerator at the start of the slip road, it’ll slow you down as intended by design and get you 99.99 mpg

Bokeitup · 10/04/2026 08:12

CeffylCoch · 27/03/2026 19:49

£195.9 here for Diesel and Welsh water have closed the main road to work so my 8 minute journey to work is almost 30 minutes now. Fuming 😡

An 8 minute drive is surely walking or cycling distance.

Bokeitup · 10/04/2026 08:12

Not necessarily - 8 minute drive for me is 2 miles - that’s a 35-40 minute fast walk and that is in town so slow roads. However not safe to cycle due to the aggressive vans and angry buses.

If I was on A roads could be easily 4-6 miles!

Bokeitup · 10/04/2026 08:12

Not necessarily! My 7 minute drive to kids schools would take 1hr 36 minutes to walk, and roads would not be very safe for walkers!

CharSiu · 10/04/2026 08:59

@Watchoutfortheslowaraf does your car show how many MPG you have achieved on a trip basis? Ours does. DH loves to declare how his driving ability influences outcome. Ours usually makes about 60 MPG on motorway driving doing around 65MPH. The way you drive has quite the influence on overall consumption plus the type of road you are driving on. Lots of speeding up then braking then speeding and braking uses far more. You are probably breaking even.

Nobody will do anything differently. People are way too entitled. A poster on here just said she doesn't want a bog standard car, she wants a nice big suv. That attitude is so prevalent and just the tip of the iceberg.

You think a 35 minute walk isn't feasible? You'll sit in a car for 35 minutes but won't walk?

MagneticSquirrel · 10/04/2026 10:36

Bokeitup · 10/04/2026 09:02

Correct - it’s an extra 30 mins each way to walk (if normal journey is 8 min and walk is 35/40) so wasting an hour walking. I’ve got better things to do.

I only walk when it’s quicker than car/public transport and significantly cheaper.

ifonly4 · 10/04/2026 16:32

Hopefully, it won't come to it, but if this war goes on and there's a fuel shortage, people won't have to the option but to make changes in terms of the journeys they do/how far they travel. When there was a fuel shortage in the 70s, drivers were asked to limit how much they use each week - it didn't come to it, but apparently ration books were issued.
