Lunch at Work

Work pays £12 per day for lunch through Deliveroo; they have just announced this amount will increase to £15 per day.

I can not say how happy I am. While it is a taxable benefit, I hardly buy dinner these days. I have a gastric sleeve, so i just eat a little and then save my lovely lunch for dinner. Honestly, saving me around £120 plus a month.

We also get a lovely breakfast on a Monday to welcome us back to the office, a fully stocked kitchen with every snack you can imagine and paid for team drinks every month. There are only 50 of us in the office.

These little perks really make being in the office 5 days a week a little more bearable (work in facilities, so we have to be in). What's the best little perk your job offers?

Free tea and coffee (I don’t drink hot drinks so no personal benefit for me there!).

i’m paid well, like my job and get a really generous leave allowance, the pension is excellent. Happy to buy my own lunch.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 20/02/2026 16:46

Last job, local government: nothing.
Previous job, a charity: varied but at best tea coffee and milk provided. At worst we had to provide tea and coffee for visitors out of our own pockets.

Fallulah · 20/02/2026 16:48

We get a baguette/roll on parents evenings (when we work 7:30am - 7pm)

A cup of tea and some cake on the last day of term at summer and Christmas.

Tampons and sanitary towels have just appeared in the toilets so that’s something I guess!

We don’t even get a discount in the canteen when we do lunch duty!

(I’m a teacher)

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 20/02/2026 17:10

I worked for a local charity. Absolutely no perks but one year we were informed that as a thank you to staff the trustees would put on a barbecue for us. We all thought how nice until the announcement was quickly followed by a list of food and drinks asking us to put our names by what we would be bringing. This included every single thing, burgers, sausages, buns, salad, breads etc. This was apparently the trustees idea of putting on a barbecue for us. 🤷‍♀️

LadyCrustybread · 20/02/2026 17:14

My husband used to work FOR Deliveroo and even they didn’t get Deliveroo every day 😂 Where do you work… Parliament?

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 20/02/2026 17:15

No “perks” as such. Work in a school so only get paid for the term time but take a pay cut to spread it over the full year so I’m paid every month (not a teacher). Have to
provide own tea and coffee, however we do have lovely parents who spoil us rotten and the staff room still has some unopened tubs of chocolates and biscuits from the generosity of parents at Christmas.

ChocHotolate · 20/02/2026 11:33

I am a nurse in the NHS. We don’t even get tea and coffee provided anymore. Best perk…? Right now I’m jealous to be sure 😢

I’m nhs too - this sounds amazing! Like you’ve said we don’t even get any tea and coffee and sugar now, we distraught Covid and for a while after and now nothing!

A Monday morning breakfast and lunch sounds amazing!!!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 20/02/2026 17:17

Also the women’s network through the charities funds used to provide sanitary products but they don’t do this anymore either!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 20/02/2026 17:26

Oh and we pay for our own stationery and our own Christmas do

In addition one of the consultants is retiring on over £120K a year and her secretary is selling tickets to her black tie retirement do comprising of £70 ticket, £20 towards a gift and £10’s worth of raffle tickets…. So £100!!! Plus dress, taxi, so needless to say I (along with the other staff I share an office with!) will be busy that night! We are all outraged at the cheek of it!

ChipDaleRescueRangers · 20/02/2026 17:32

Fuck all. Have to provide everything ourselves. We do have canteen facilities but at £7 for a meal we all in my department bring lunch from home/tesco meal deal.

newbie202020 · 20/02/2026 17:34

20 days a year emergency nanny or full day holiday clubs

Judellie · 20/02/2026 17:59

Local Government too so nothing really. On flexi time and hybrid tho. The managers in our department bought everyone a Christmas present themselves from their own pockets (choice of red wine/white wine/rose wine or tin of chocs). It all stopped during covid but has started again now that we have to come into the office more than 1 day a week.
We used to get Easter eggs from the manageers themselves too so waiting to see if that starts up again

thats outragous!

Not really, imagine how outraged folk would be if the Local Authority did this for staff, it would represent probably a large amount of expenses that ultimately come out of the public purse..... I work for a Local Authority too and I've long joked that it's only a matter of time before we are told to bring our own toliet paper.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 20/02/2026 21:57

LividArse · 20/02/2026 13:42

We get to pay £55 to work all night attend the Year 11 prom...

I’d absolutely refuse!

usedtobeaylis · 20/02/2026 22:02

I guess the unlimited tea (with milk) is nice but the best perk is flexi.

Edit: and hybrid working!

Edinburghdaze · 20/02/2026 12:13

NHS and nothing for us. Need to buy own tea, milk etc and pay for our own microwave to heat lunches.

Same here as a teacher. We club together to buy kitchen essentials like washing up liquid and cutlery too when needed.

Sidebeforeself · 20/02/2026 22:41

hairyunicorn · 20/02/2026 11:59

thats outragous!

It’s not ..its normal:

EveryDayisFriday · 20/02/2026 22:44

Perks: I wfh based on productivity not hours at the desk, very flexible (low workload). I have a health cash plan, health insurance, mobile phone and a company car.

Downside: pay could be much better, statutuory employer pension %, holidays and sick leave.

Biscuits4 · 21/02/2026 15:56

Nothing here, other than a Xmas treat and we're still waiting for that!

JudgeJ · 22/02/2026 09:38

hairyunicorn · 20/02/2026 11:59

thats outragous!

I think it's probably the norm in the public services, when I was teaching there was nothing provided. the microwave was bought from the staff fund into which we all contributed for leaving gifts etc. At the Christmas do the Head would buy the first round but that was from his own pocket!

Squirrelchops1 · 22/02/2026 09:41

Civil service. No freebies but the cafes are cheap.

Oh and the 1 hour well being hour a week, flexi working and pension.

MindYourUsage · 26/02/2026 15:59

Work in tech. Basic food provided such as bread/bagels with jams, nutella, butter. Basic cereals and milks.

Unlimited snacks around the office; crisps, pretzels, chocolate bars, fruit, salted nuts, cereal bars etc....

Month end there is sometimes hot food ordered in for one or two days.

AlwaysPurple · 26/02/2026 16:22

We get a travel pass that covers all public transport in the combined authority area, all day every day for me, and an off peak equivalent for my spouse. Can be used for any travel, not just work. Has meant we sometimes go into town or to leisure places at the weekend on the bus or train. DH is SAHD to takes little one to soft play or to shops during the week on the bus.

Now that's one hell of a perk! Travel costs me £254 pm. I would love this!

We get some good perks:

£200 towards public transport (1day a week in office)

£800 wellness account

£1200 healthcare spending I.e. contact lenses, dentist fees, etc

£600 for home office supplies.

However, no free coffee in the office.

But the pension is DB so I'll forgive them -
