Lunch at Work

Work pays £12 per day for lunch through Deliveroo; they have just announced this amount will increase to £15 per day.

I can not say how happy I am. While it is a taxable benefit, I hardly buy dinner these days. I have a gastric sleeve, so i just eat a little and then save my lovely lunch for dinner. Honestly, saving me around £120 plus a month.

We also get a lovely breakfast on a Monday to welcome us back to the office, a fully stocked kitchen with every snack you can imagine and paid for team drinks every month. There are only 50 of us in the office.

These little perks really make being in the office 5 days a week a little more bearable (work in facilities, so we have to be in). What's the best little perk your job offers?

Oh I feel lucky, we get:
Loads of types of tea
Nespresso coffee
Milk and milk alternatives
Biscuits, breakfast bars, fruit, sweeties, mints
Occasional cakes/chocolate
Period products and nice hand cream in bathrooms
stationary
umbrellas to borrow
Company wide lunch once per month
Christmas party with free bar

ChipsandCheesewithGravy · 20/02/2026 12:39

I can have as many post stick notes as I want and cheapest biros in the cupboard.

Angelil · 20/02/2026 12:51

Unlimited tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
Free fruit every day.
€70 gift card at Christmas.
Bonuses twice a year.
Free film club once a month, including popcorn.
Free use of on-site gym facilities.
There are plenty of clubs for staff as well (choir, yoga and running as a minimum). They also offered free self-defence training for women recently.
’Cocktail party’ type thing on site 2-3 times a year, with everything laid on by the organisation (booze, nibbles…).
They also reimburse your petrol or train costs if commuting over a certain distance but IDK if that’s standard.

Angelil · 20/02/2026 12:52

Oh yeah, they also fund the Christmas party.

Twooclockrock · 20/02/2026 12:58

My best work perk is to work 100% from home with no one checking my hours or what I do from minute to minute. I have to show up for scheduled meetings and then the rest of my work I can do as and how and when I like.
I could double my salary going back to an in office role but with my SEN kids this job has been a lifesaver.

Absolutely nothing free, local government, we have to provide tea/coffee, milk for volunteers!

Ditto here.

We even had to club together to buy a kettle.......

I am a nurse in the NHS. We don’t even get tea and coffee provided anymore. Best perk…? Right now I’m jealous to be sure 😢

NHS too … even if we were allowed the tea and coffee on the ward it’s decaf! 😢 I bring a coffee in a flask in the morning. We do have a water fountain though, just don’t leave your bottle unlabelled or not in the kitchen otherwise it gets binned. 🙃

RaininSummer · 20/02/2026 13:02

What an amazing perk. We get nothing at all.

Eifla2o18 · 20/02/2026 13:04

WOW. Civil service. We have to provide own tea, coffee etc and that for visitors from other agencies.

Twooclockrock · 20/02/2026 13:04

I once worked somewhere for 4 years where I had a coutts expense card with unlimited budget for client entertainment and at christmas we all got a £1000 john lewis gift card.
I also worked somewhere where they took us on an annual conference and one year we went to the hotel du cap which is an elite hotel in south of france, we all got given expensive new luggage bags (£500 leather brics bags) they flew our luggage out before us and ironed it and hung it up for us. They had limos with champagne on ice picking us up from the airport. We had individual rooms and then had loads of activities such as a film crew was hired to help us make a film in teams and the winning teams all won cam corders and we basicaly drank champagne for the entire time and ate like kings. This was all before they tightened up on company expense taxes and bribary laws.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/02/2026 13:05

When I worked in an office (we also did hybrid), nice coffee machines and free fruit plus free activities like go karting.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 20/02/2026 13:07

I’m a probation officer, our best perks are 150% caseloads, a total of an 11% pay rise since 2010 and “safety” training that involves using our words to talk down violent offenders.

I’ve temped in civil service. When I didn’t know about this I had to borrow milk from someone before I bought my own.

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 20/02/2026 13:07

In my last job we all used to get a massive, custom Fortnum and Mason hamper at Christmas, about £300 worth. It's the only thing I miss about working there, though.

I used to temp in admin for the probation service so I have huge admiration for probation officers. All the admin staff had very little time for those on probation or community service.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/02/2026 13:10

Actually saying that, I did get as a high level temp PA a trip to a hotel with other corporate types, free luxe food, just to encourage us to book there. I also got through work tickets to a Fortnum and Mason event for pas where you got a free gift bag and nice freebie evening with food and drink.

Teenagerantruns · 20/02/2026 13:13

Its been a long time since l worked in an office, but when l did tea and coffee was always free, last one we had fruit and bread for toast and wine /bee on Fridays.
My last job in a kitchen we had a free meal every day, plus unlimited cofee and soft drinks from tbe bar.

Appleandcidergravy · 20/02/2026 13:15

NHS again
Perks- buying the new kettle, microwave, ward bag etc
Buying drinks and coffee for visitors and for admin staff when they are short staffed and higher management decide they want them to do yet another job....
Cons
Don't leave on time
Very little pay rise

Friendlygingercat · 20/02/2026 13:20

Ive never worked anywhere where we got tea/coffee etc. However when I was an academic there would be at least one drinks reception each week for visiting dignitaries. I went to some interesteing places in Europe and the USA courtesy of my employer for academic conferences. In those days you had to stay a minium number of days to get the cheap air fare. So that would often give you several days to yourself. The uni paid for all food and drink as well as 5 * hotels during the stay although private entertainment (shows, sightseeing etc) was on my tab. Most conferences would have some built in "events" with the registration fee. In Las Vegas they took us on a tour of the most famous hotels, Fortunately I dont gamble!

RudolphTheReindeer · 20/02/2026 13:20

I don't get any! I don't know of any work places that pay for lunch for everyone. Lucky you :)

DLRPmember · 20/02/2026 13:21

I work for a food retailer and we get 30% off own brand. It’s handy as I live very close to one of our stores (don’t work in one).

catera · 20/02/2026 13:24

I get tea, coffee, milk and on meeting days (if I’m not in the meeting) then we get fed the buffet available too
paid lunch and breaks (1hr total a day)

fruitsalads · 20/02/2026 13:28

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 20/02/2026 12:17

Biggest perk in my job? I WfH 100%, saving me £300+ a month and 3 hours a day commuting into London. Plus lunches are cheap and easy from home, and no big coffee shop bill. Plus I save on smart workwear.

Same here! Easily saving £500 a month. Probably not the idea of the thread though!

In my last job meals were provided but had to be eaten in a squashed staff room area, unless you were a senior manager who could eat in the office because they were soooooo busy 🙄. Therefore the highest paid all took the lunches . Then the cleaners, the lowest paid, were outsourced and no longer got meals as they were now “contractors”. One of a number of unfair scenarios why I no longer work there!

DancingInTheMoonlights · 20/02/2026 13:35

I used to work for the NHS and we got zero perks.

I now work for a mental health charity and we get our Birthday off which I think is a lovely touch.

We also get access to ten free counselling/therapy sessions per year which would cost ££££ if we had to pay for it ourselves.

They’re also just so much kinder and nicer to work for than the NHS.

Work for local government. My only perk is my pension (that I also contribute 6.5% of my salary too every month). Nothing else - no bonus, no tea & coffee provided, xmas do is paid for by everyone who wants to attend and cannot be held in works time etc etc.

Same here.
I also buy my own notepads and pens because the stuff provided in the stationery cupboard is awful.
I've worked in local government for a long time and always felt flexitime was the best perk.
