So I treated my daughter to dunk doughnuts today with coffee it was £16.
£10 for picky bits from marksies.
£10 on some phonics books.

Frugal25 · 21/03/2026 20:00

Oohh what exhibition @RumBananaSundae? Sorry about the utility company. That sounds shoddy.

@ChipshopPickledEgglove a donut!! Jealous!!

@MuddlingLongim so glad you have your lovely DW. Sounds very sensible and you can do some good in the world as you prepare. Sounds ideal.

Forgot to say I cancelled two more subscriptions today and got a new deal on my mobile. Down from £10.65 to £9. Not much but it all helps

MuddlingLong · 21/03/2026 20:05

Thank you guys for understanding! I feel very lucky to have DW as she's so supportive and just wants the best for me.

I think I need a bank with 'pots'. I'm currently with First Direct who don't have them. Bonus points if it's a bank where you get something for switching to them.

MuddlingLong · 21/03/2026 20:06

Also humming and hashing about YNAB. It's very expensive! Will I get good use out of it? £15 a month is a lot of money. Any users of it who can tell me about it?

BigSkies2022 · 21/03/2026 21:43

You can do pots with Chase. And I am sure that old fashioned spreadsheets to plan your expenditure/cash flow across the year are just fine. Just keep checking into your banking apps and keeping track of your spending. My mum balanced their household accounts, my dad’s business account and got everything ready for the tax accountant using pen and paper.

ArmDimples · 21/03/2026 22:32

Hiya, I don’t get much time to post in the week so tend to check in at weekends.

On YNAB, I didn’t even try it for 10 years as it seemed ridiculously expensive and I am handy with a spreadsheet… HOWEVER. Now I have i absolutely love it, not for the number crunching exactly but for the change in attitude it has brought about in me. That is easily worth the cost, it will make such a big difference to me (and I wasn’t stupid with money before but I was ‘generous’ with myself, iyswim)

I think it was Frugal who said she likes more detail - you can make it as detailed as you like! For monthly stuff I have as many buckets as I like and same for irregular payments. For instance, I have lines for all my annual and monthly subscriptions, payments etc (down to things that cost £25 per year), effectively you put aside 1/12 of the cost each month. It takes a while to level out because whenever you start with YNAB there will be some annual costs that are due ‘soon’ so you will have to pay those faster than you would once you are past them and saving up for the next year. But it is such a great feeling that once the bill comes around I am just taking it off a budget line that already has enough ‘credit’ in it. I have termly expenses for DD, for example, and they are now in place in advance. It will be the same when I get to home insurance, paying for holidays etc.

the main benefit to me will be to understand exactly where I am spending loads (food!) and to level out the lumpy spending so that I can hold myself to account more regarding regular savings. In the past I wouldn’t feel too bad if I didn’t save in a month with a big spend, but then wasn’t saving enough on the other months either to make up for it and was just frittering more. I also really like the interface. I’d advise setting it up on a laptop if you can and then use the app for small adjustments and checking on the go. And checking out the YouTube tutorials from Nick from mappedoutmoney - I spent an afternoon watching his tutorials and set it all up for there. You can try this with the free month’s trial and only pay if you like it .

I do exactly what BIg (I think?) says. During the month of March everything that has been paid into my bank accounts (including the joint account) has gone onto a line called ‘next month’s money’. I haven’t spent a penny of it. Come 1st April I will allocate all that to April’s spends and savings targets, and the money that comes in during April will be saved for May. It has take me a couple of months to get there but it is great.

anyway, enough of my gushing!

glad you are loving your trip Need. I’d probably feel the same about a nice knitting retreat 😂

Lovely of your DW to support you taking your time to recover muddling. She’s a keeper.

Nice to know so many people are in London - I didn’t realise Frugal was too! I am Zone 4, so between y’all.

Big I think you were right to complain about the eyelash stuff too - I probably wouldn’t but it’ll be annoyed with myself for not doing, YANBU!

Awful, awful week at work. Am really struggling with someone in a senior role who has got it in for me because of history… the person is being very unprofessional but I think it would be hard to prove. I’ve been losing sleep over it, sigh. Things are also getting trickier with DS at home and school, double sigh.

Mostly I am cooking this weekend, for a bake sale and a succession of visitors. It’s good distraction but has pushed the budget up this week! I am over on my food budget this week, need to rethink it for April. I used the pizza oven tonight to cook for some friends who came over, it was very decent! I think I’ve got the hang of making and stretching the dough but not quite how much topping to use to make it not too wet or dry. I’ll get there though!

We’re watching Smal Prophets at the moment. I loved The Detectorists, I thought it was absolutely brilliant and charming. This is a very similar vibe but I am not loving the homunculi in jars! I think they are really creepy and can only watch out of the corner of my eye, hence typing here while DH watches 😉😂

EmbracingUncertainty · 22/03/2026 07:55

im curious as to how YNAB differs from Monzo where you have targets for different categories? What else does it tell you?

@MuddlingLong that’s great your DW is so supportive, and well done in prioritising your wellbeing. I’m taking a career break at the moment and I have some income from very part time work and freelance but it is hard to adjust to the imbalance in household income and the loss of identity from my previous job. I am considering volunteering for a mentoring programme for high school students that I’d need to commit to for a year which is a bit daunting.

Frugal25 · 22/03/2026 08:13

Morning all, forgot to add £25 on petrol yesterday. Hoping for a NSD today.

Thank you armdimples, I'll revisit ynab and do it on the laptop instead and make it more detailed. I don't think I really understood it before tbh.

lifelongfrugaleer · 22/03/2026 08:14

That sounds like a good plan muddling
well done frugal dd
dk the test session with ynab muddling
Monzo also have pots
i loved small prophets and detectorists arm
spring thing are crap at home & work. I love a good cook/ bake session
I’m attempting a roast second since Xmas day. See of the old neurons still work

spend day yesterday. Gave dd money to go to Edinburgh with the farm lot. They work but she doesn’t. Pita as the trains are off on our stretch of the line (north east)
and stood DS done new clothes
also uni decision made £50 deposit for halls

Handeyethingyowl · 22/03/2026 11:53

Joining the club for tips - we realised this week how much we are overspending by... First priority being to stop buying stuff!

Alwaysploddingon · 22/03/2026 12:32

The sun is shining and it's so much easier to have a nsd Sunday with small children. DH is out for first half of the day. Yesterday we went to the garden centre, don't know how much we spent as DH paid, got reduced flowers, planters and playsand. I asked my eldest (7) what she wanted, which was to chose something to make from her recipe book. She chose pizza, we have all ingredients for for lunch. We went to the park and they've been playing in the garden and sandpit after lunch.

I spent £60 on rounders after school club for the summer term. which is essential childcare and cheeper than wraparound care, but more than her going to a friend's every Thursday.

Unfortunately I have had to transfer some money out of isasavings into my current account to cover this month's bills. I was looking at other options, like using the credit cards we have but the interest rates were much higher than savings.

I hope to put the savings back after payday as it will be more this month due to overtime.

Alwaysploddingon · 22/03/2026 12:41

This month's bills being an extra as I'm taking the car for MOT and service tomorrow. Really hope it passes. 🤞 I wanted to wait but they didn't have any 'waiting appointments' on the days I needed so Ive decided to get a garage car for £30+ petrol. I need to collect my children from 2:30 so couldn't risk being carless.

ChipshopPickledEgg · 22/03/2026 12:43

That's an interesting idea so my march 27 payday is effectively April 27 payday? Sort of being a month in hand with bills?

A colleague does this and I think it's very clever when she moved out she got herself three months in advance on each bill using some money she saved up so she has time to act on issues.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 22/03/2026 15:36

Afternoon everyone 😊
Been to see Mum who was fine thankfully. NSD today , l am resisting going shopping and shopping online . I am trying my best to stop buying the bits and bobs that adds up a lot !

Got to Asda at double yellow sticker time so spent just over £4 and £2.70 in Greggs.

The Michelangelo/Rodin exhibition @Frugal25. I’m looking forward to it. It sounds like it’s going to be quite large.

Sorry to hear about the work situation @ArmDimples. I sympathise. I hope you can find a way through. It’s hard. And disorientating.

Glad your mum is ok @DirtyGertiefromno30. Still not managed a no spend yet.

Got some admin done today. Wrote to the solicitor. Transferred money for the council tax and paid that. Now feeling rather impoverished. Really looking forward to my break next month. Weekends go so quickly these days. Think I’ll try reading this evening to wind down. Taking an evening stroll always ends up in Sainsbury’s and buying things I don’t need.

Frugal25 · 22/03/2026 18:13

Oh that does sound good @RumBananaSundae I shall take a look.

@Handeyethingyowl welcome 🤗

@Alwaysploddingon so much easier with small children for a NSD Sunday!!! Such a good idea getting them to decide a meal out of their book, I'll be taking this idea! And after school clubs, I'll nick that idea too thank you 🥰 needed to bridge gaps isn't it.

@DirtyGertiefromno30so glad your mum is ok. What a beautiful day too.

@ArmDimples sorry about work. It's heartbreaking when it affects you that much as we spend so much time there. We are always here to chat to though xx

Oh you've reminded me I have a Monzo account, made years ago and never used- I'll try and log in.

A year is daunting but I'm sure it will fly by. The loss of identity from working is something I struggle with as well as the guilt of not financially contributing. Mentoring programme sounds very fulfilling, good luck if you go for it.

NSD so far but considering takeaway for dinner. Will be cheaper as just me and DS as DW is full from lunch she says!

Missed a few days of posting - quite a busy week by complete co-incidence it was quite spendy. But all budgeted for.

Well done to your DD @Frugal25

Brilliant idea about the DEXA scan @needastrongone I'm 53 and do Bodypump once per week plus cardio / running / walking. My DM (94) and Dsis (63) have osteoporosis so would be good to plan ahead a bit there.

Pleased your DM is still doing well @DirtyGertiefromno30

Booked the fence repair in, new shed ordered on a Costco deal as ours leaking and handyman booked in. IKEA order collected today for the handyman to put up shelves. Also got some new storage boxes for the living room that match! That's two out four goals in the house this year, plus putting a fence straight back up after the recent storm. All in budget although may need to top up the emergency fund for the fence repair.

Also booked an Air B&B for a weekend away in June.

Unless my sums are way out I think I am within budget on the grocery / social this month, only by a few £ but last month I was £250 over 🙏

MuddlingLong · 22/03/2026 20:34

Thank you @DirtyGertiefromno30 I get PIP thankfully for which I'm very grateful as we're not eligible for anything else but it makes a big difference.

NursieBernard · 22/03/2026 22:07

A few spends this weekend but they have come out of the allocated 'pots'
I did the weekly shop in Aldi for a change this week, it worked out about £4-5 cheaper than my usual Tesco or Sainsbury shop plus I saved on the delivery fee. I think I will try and do at 2 out of 4 shops there, although it will mean having to go after work as there isn't an Aldi that close.

One more week of phased return hours this week and then I'll be back to long days again, not looking forward to it.

@ArmDimples sorry to hear about your problems at work and your issues with your DS, I hope things improve for you soon.

@DirtyGertiefromno30 good to hear that your mum is doing okay.

Payday is on Friday so trying to eek everything out until then! I hope everyone has a good week.

Vinorosso74 · 23/03/2026 10:27

Had quite a spendy week last week, mainly social spending! I was already at a gig one nignt then lunch and drinks with friends. I then had a (lovely) last minute day with a friend so another lunch and train fare.
Need to have a very low spend week to even things ou!
